Old wide blade style putter

Recommended Posts

Can you give me suggestions for a good, wide blade, by wide I’m talking Bettinardi 28 sort of mallety blade. I’m looking to do a customisation.

So, ideally it would be cheapish, as I want to cerakote it, condition doesn’t really matter so it can be a few years old, will be blasted to remove any rust and blemishes dealt with.

It would need a milled face, no insert and something that lends itself to a full, all-over coating, rather like my Del Mar, pictured. Graphics and/or text to be paint filled.

Some toe-hang preferred.

What's a good price for a Sonoma? The reason I ask is that I saw one today at my local secondhand store and tried it. I really liked it, but it was a little short for me, and over $200 (used).

OP: Not sure what shape putter you want, or why you want to do what you want to do, but if you're looking for a putter like the Del Mar, why not pick up a beat-up TaylorMade TPA XVIII and redo that (Wilson and later Cobra also made these putters, though I've never seen the Cobra version)?

However, they'll be light by modern standards, so may be not suitable as your regular putter??

Good question. I have no idea as the Sonoma is rare in Australia. From the California Series, perhaps the Del Mar is the most popular. I had one that I sold in almost $300. It was an OTR, California first gen.

I haven't many around here, either. Like you in Australia, lots of Del Mars, but I think this was the first Sonoma I have seen.

Lucky me... I have both Gen I and II.

The Sonoma I was 35” and I have cut to 34” and added weight but the Sonoma II was 34” and only got a new Pistolero grip. Both are very nice, the I produces a nice “ting” sound every time I hit it in the sweet spot.

> #9 Odyssey ProType?? Can be found on you know what for cheap!!! IMHO the best non insert milled putters that they have ever made. I will never get rid of my #6. Pure and silky roll!!! I have no idea why it posted in this font.....

I have a ProType that I bought a couple of weeks ago, for cheap, £60 delivered, just waiting for the new grip to arrive tomorrow before I give it a round.

I should add that I can’t buy any more putters as I bought a Kronos Mandala which arrived today, and I now have no room in my putter space, not even for a thin one I don’t think. 11 will have to suffice, although I realise that’ll be difficult.

Very nice!!! I was looking at their website this morning looking at the Anchor. Interesting putter that claims to look like Hogans putter back when. I do like their Release Raw or PVD. The D'arcy looks spectacular too. Pretty pricey for sure!!! How deep is the milling?? Who would you compare the milling too?? Congratulations Joelsim and look forward to your reviews on the Kronos and the ProType!!! My ProType has kicked out many out of my bag. Problem is, I keep buying more putters!!!!

I’ll do reviews, but not sure when, these are in rotation so even at 3 rounds per week, each stick will only be used once per month! Clearly I’ll get the new ones out a bit more just to have a go, but realistically the Odyssey 9 has been bought to use on wet, horrible days in rotation with my Cleveland HB, with the newer/more expensive putters being kept for better days. The milling on the face is about the same depth as the Odyssey ProType, but bigger gaps in between the mills. It feels a bit softer than some at first actually but I obviously haven’t been able to roll in with a decent grip - it came with an Iomic that was about as wide as a drinking straw and definitely not to my taste.
