Scramble/Charity Events and the "Buy Mulligans"

Recommended Posts

I'll start by saying, I'm not one of those guys who takes scrambles too seriously. Now saying that, it's still nice to walk away sometimes with bragging rights and sometimes with a nice prize.....usually have the same groups year after year gunning for us.

To the point....charity portion allows for individual to buy 5 mulligans each. So"Team C", each member buys the package with 5 mulligans and proceeds to win the tournament and brag about having to use most of their Mulligans.... The group behind them saw (who were furious btw with the pace of play of this group) that when they took a mulligan, they took 1 mulligan as a group...they apparently took mully's on every hole.....on putts, fairway shots, drives, chips etc. They played them as it was 20 mulligans for the group not 5 mulligans per individual....

Why I'm I asking? I don't know, we ended up second with a legit no mully -15, and they came in at a -20, who cares, but man the balls on these guys!

Question: I'm sure many of you have seen this charity/corporate scramble mulligan thing before, so how should those Mulligans be used? Each man gets 5 mulligans (drives, iron shot, putts) or does the whole group get 20 mulligans?

Well, it's a scramble, so expect lots of pencil whipping, bending the rules, and beer drinking :-)

It's supposed to be the individuals who purchased the mulligans, and when we play in charity scrambles we have to even our odds and always buy the max number of mullies. That said, each group will do whatever benefits them, regardless of the rules by tourney committee.

Fact of life today, even in golf, integrity has seem to fallen off people's radar.

In the charity events I play in, if it is not specified, we take each mulligan as the entire team gets a second chance. The way I look at it is, every stroke counted toward the score gets 4 shots. A mulligan is a re-do of a stroke. Therefore, a mulligan is 4 new shots to re-do that stroke. Besides, it's a charity scramble, the winner is the charity. I play those for the booze and the fun.

For the record, I have never seen it specified one way or another. If it really does bother you, you could ask the organizers and ask them to make an announcement about it as they are giving their speeches and preparing to send the hoards of carts onto the course. I think you'd be looked at as the fuddy-duddy type and possibly not invited back, but hey, if it's important to you, go for it. We use the mulligans on putts when necessary (a 6 footer that should have gone but didnt 4 times, do it again). There are no limits as to which type of stroke a mulligan can be used for, only the number allowed based on how much money you pony up.

Anyone who gets furious with a group at a charity scramble has no business playing charity scrambles. They are complete sh**-shows, and are always a 5.5-6 hour round. You have to know and accept that before you ever agree to play, and approach it for what it is: a chance to slap some balls around and have a few drinks instead of sitting in the office, all the while raising money for a worthy cause.

My interpretation is there are 5 purchased that the entire team can use. Unless it explicitly say 5max/per person for use. The reality is it is supposed to be a way to grab an extra $20 from each individual. It’s like raffle prizes, people who buy the most tickets tend to win the most prizes, can’t complain that you didn’t win when the probability is not in your favor( not saying you are complaining). But if you can get mulligans and you didn’t, and another group got them and used them? Next year ask.

If each guy buys 5- then each player gets 5 mulligans during the round that can take place on a drive, approach, etc... The worst is when you play a scramble where they give each group a foot of string. Basically, you get a foot of string. Every putt, approach, etc that is within that foot is good until you use the entire foot of string. Talk about shenanigans going on within groups.

Winning a scramble is about as noteworthy as winning a game of Monopoly.

Buying multiples I think is exaggerating the sillyness of scrambles too much. I think skins and Mulligan's should be added into the entry fee , not an add-on because it makes things simpler

Selling mulligans is simply a way of increasing the take for the charity, I don't mind them. But the "rules" for the mulligan should be made clear, whether one mulligan means an additional shot for all team members, or one additional shot for one player.

Most of the ones I've played in are well sponsored and don't need that sillyness. Around here on tournaments with cash prizes to the winners it gets donated back more times than not.

We had a scramble here years ago, I didn't play, where you could buy as many Mulligan's as you could afford.it was for the children's miracle network. Annoyed so many people they've never been back.

I beg to disagree

We

We’re following a bunch of guys who were useless. Not one could hit it straight and more than 200 yards

On the longest drive comp, one of our guys +1 hit it 320 and he’s 30yards behind where the guy in front had put the marker down. So he picked it up and moved it 60yards back. He didn’t want the prize,

Just thought they were cheating gits

He did the same on closest to the hole and straightest drive. Fuck em ?

Depends upon the scramble. Now the OP is talking about charity scrambles. Those I have not seen particularly wonderful prizes so who really cares how the rules are applied.

However, there is a big five man, blind draw scramble here that uses handicaps to define your a,b,c players. The prizes are iron sets and drivers depending upon where you place. Closest to pins are putters or iron sets, longest drives are drivers. Entry fee is around $150 per person and a calcutta. No mulligans or skirts or none of that but you can bet there is some creative scoring. Course is already not super hard but they make it as hard as they can by tucking pins where they can and pushing all the tees back.. A team score of 52 or 53 is needed to win. 55+ will not place. If you don't eagle 3/4 par fives you don't have a chance.

Read my post again...unless it's an official event, I don't take scrambles too seriously.... but why not try and play good golf, hit good shots and make some putts while having a few beers enjoying the day? If we win great, if not, whatever. Point I'm making is that some of these tourney give out great prizes (not that I need anything), find it a little unfair for a group who plays by the rules, maybe uses the odd mulligan for the donation, but not abuse the silly mulligan thing.

Eh, this sounds more legit to be sure, but I still don't get it. Scrambles are just waaaaaaay to contrived. They are like "pretend" competition.

Ideally, winning a golf competition should be a sign of someone's golfing ability. With a scramble win, I don't think any claims concerning individual skill can be made.

Best we had was a score of 52 and that was with two guys off of +1 and +2 who both have been on certain tours.

This was a high school one and the winning score was 49, with a dad and 3 girls on the high school team ?. I know the dad as he plays in our Saturday morning group and plays off 11. Great guy, but 49 ?. We still have fun about that one and yeah he said there were some loose scores. No biggie
