The Modus 125 wedge flex weighs 133 grams. The Modus 120 stiff weighs 114 grams.

* Your half-inch longer shaft increased SwWt by +3 points.

* Lessening the weight of the shaft by 9 grams will cut SwWt by -1 points, so lowering 19 grams would cut SwWt by -2 points.

* For every 5 grams you increase grip weight, you cut SwSt by -1 points.

So, if you go to the lighter shaft and add a grip that's 10 grams heavier than your current, this would bring SwWt down to D5.

You cant reduce resistance by adding weight, resistance goes up, so all you did was fooling the SW scale AND yourself. Ive done the numbers for that so many times, i simply want do it again here, that debate is over years ago.

Modus 125 has a Balance point at 20.00" for a 39.00" so its 51.28% weight butt side (Counter weighted). Modus 120 has a Balance point at 19.50" for a 39.00" so is "neutral" or 50% on each side.

Difference as Shaft MOI in contribution to the club at plus 0.5" as Wedge is

Modus 120S

GW = 172

SW = 168

LW = 164

Modus 125S

GW = 190

SW = 186

LW = 182

DIFFERENCES

GW = 190 - 172 = 18 Moi points = 2.39 grams head weight / 2.26 for each SWP = 1.06 SWP down

SW = 186 - 168 = 18 Moi points = 2.42 grams head weight / 2.29 for each SWP = 1.06 SWP down

LW = 182 - 164 = 18 Moi points = 2.46 grams head weight / 2.31 for each SWP = 1.06 SWP down

Changing from Modus 125 S to Modus 120 S take SW value down 1.06 SWP

If you reduce play length, 1/8" makes a drop of 0.75 SWP so its not much you get from a shaft change here, consider pulling (you need that anyway), and hosel drill those heads down in weight to save a shaft change who becomes silly expensive to remove 1 SWP.

PS all numbers is based on Modus IRON shafts, not the Wedge dedicated who is 133 grams vs 126 as Iron.

Please STOP misleading other about ADDING Counterweight to fix a SW issue, that CANT BE DONE. Read this and dont forget it.

We can use a CW weighted shaft WITH THE SAME WEIGHT, then we have redistributed the weight, THEN IT WORKS, but the moment we ADD WEIGHT, Actual resistance goes UP, NOT DOWN

OK, thats makes a difference yes.

Modus 125 WEDGE 133 gr BP 51.8 % - Modus 120 IRONS 114 gr, Neutral BP

GW = 200 - 172 = 28 Moi p = 3.72 grams head weight /2.26 = 1.64 SWP

It’s just that I was thinking of ordering new tm milled grind 2 wedges 50/54/60 but can get modus tour 120 1/2 longer or use my current shafts modus 125 wedge shafts ,so if I went with the modus tour 120 114g this will reduce swing weights on the 3 wedges by 1.6 ..am I correct in saying this ? My current 60 is d8 so with new modus 120 in tm wedge should bring it down to d6.5ish and so on with 54&50 ??

Balance point is % from the tip, so we are 1.8% into the butt end, thats where BP is on 125 Wedge, while 120 irons is on the middle 50/50

If the shaft is lets say 37.00 like Modus Wedge is, we take 37.00 x 51.8 % = and gets 19.20" as reply as distance from the tip to BP. for Modus 120 is 50/50 so its 37 x 0.5 = 18.50" from the tip to BP

The way i do the numbers uses a few fixed parameters who might be different real life like BBGM for wedge is 1 5/8 in my app, but as long as we use the same, we get a "apple to apple" between 2 shafts and can do the math for MOI, and convert to SWP so we know we got it right.

You got it right, with a BIG IF....IF they use the same "standard" head weight, no matter shaft or play length, so that question is something i cant answer, only Titleist them self can.

My numbers is "relative", like you was changing shafts yourself, and the same heads with no additional weight added, so the numbers ive done is simply the difference itself, using the same heads or head weight if you like.

Sounds like maybe your head is extra heavy...? I have a modus 125 wedge shaft in my LW and I'm pretty sure my head are "normal" weight and I'm around D5 or so IIRC. I'll check again tonight though, maybe mine is higher SW... either way I never get too bogged down in SW scale numbers. What matters is the club feels good in hand and during the swing. If you played the best golf of your life @ D9 but you normally used D5, would you really change?

Thx for replies,out of curiosity if one was playing 1/2” longer and found the 3sw extra too much ,if they were to cut the 1/2” off then decided this didn’t work for whatever reason and adding the 1/2 “ back by using titanium plug ..would this still be adding 3sw or would the plug be a lot less as it’s not steel

Its play length, distance from the end of the grip to the heads COG that makes "SW", what the last half inch is make of does not matter for anything else than total wgt.

Your shafts was 133 grams as 37.00" = 3.6 grams pr inch / 2 = the half inch at the end is 1.8 grams

You might get it down to 1, but it does not matter at all. so you want solve anything by that.

  • 10 months later...

That depends on what Nippon model, (its a question of where that shafts balance point is vs DG), but if its the same as DG SW value will move up close to 2 SWP

If the question was about Modus 120 S flex, the BP is the same as S400, so expect SW to move to D7

Here may be the simple answer; Drill, 1/4" Carbide Drill bit, vise with vise pads . Clamp the head and port it out. Watch your depth. I did it to lighten the swingweight on a set of Fourteen wedges. The raw head weight on the 60* was in the 315 gram range where I like mine around 305-300 . A little sole grinding to get the shape and bounce , then two small ports did the trick to get the turf interaction, weight and feel I wanted.

As Howard_Jones said counter balancing will fool the swingweight scale and just increase overall weight.

Is E4-E5 too heavy for SW-LW wedges?

The honest answer is that is up to you . Short game feel and performance is so personal depending on a laundry list of factors.
