Slight push cut on Range. Massive push/hook on course

Recommended Posts

I’m convinced I have a deep-rooted alignment issue. I’m the definition of a range hero. I’m the butter cut champ on the range and the snipe hook king on the course. I’m coming a good 45* from the inside and flipping on the course. I’ve seen two instructors and even did a pricey on course lesson to show the range vs. course fade vs. hook issue. I’m a 8.5 handicap and feel like I’ve hit a road block after going from a 20 to a 7.5 from 2014 to 2017 and staying around a 8-11 the past 2 years.

How do I get over this hump!? I know better players get the snaps but it’s been my game for almost 2 years now. Please help!

Take alignment sticks out on the course for a round. First, just set up to the ball as you normally do and then drop a stick aligned with you feet. Step away and go behind and see if that is where you think it should be and note whether the tee markers are throwing you off.

On my home course, the tee markers and the trees aim you into deep trouble on the majority of holes.

This has allowed me to watch an uncountable number of people either hit it into the junk or duck hook or banana slice it when their subconscious screams: "why are you hitting it in the junk?".

If I do this 11,548 more times, I will be having fun. - Zippy the Pinhead

Do you have a preshot routine? Id find one and rehearse on range and course everytime. Make an emphasis on a certain “feel” like holding off, or rotating. If i had to guess your rotation on the course may be lacking vs range. We get all fired up and forget to turn with our body, this could cause an extreme inside out path.

Sounds pretty simple. Sounds like you are taking the club back with your hands and going inside . My feel for the cure of that is that my arms do not start the backswing. My hip/shoulder turn does. My arms just stay passive and out front. Doing this makes it near impossible ( in my layman’s mind) to suck the club inside. That little push fade you’re describing on the range sounds like a perfectly timed bandaid that you can’t replicate under the gun.

I’d find someone good to advise me ( several online here ...Monte , Dan etc .) and learn a new backswing trigger and path. That’s the root of any swing. If you can get to the top properly the rest will just about swing itself.

That’s funny I started doing that feel of “swinging with my body” and played some really good golf with it. Could be wise to incorporate that feel into said routine mentioned above.

The question is do you know what is causing flips to occur? Are you using the awful though of creating and retaining "lag"? See the video below about the falsity of lag, and how it can lead to flipping.

It does not. The perception happens at address. Essentially if the target line should be at 12 o'clock and parallel to your feet, when I line up my feet are square but what I think is 12 o'clock is really more like 1:00 or even 1:30. Same for chips and putts as well. Again, can get it right on the range quickly with alignment sticks but it gets worse and worse on the course. I even pick a spot a few feet in front of my ball on the target line but when i try to trust that things start getting a little shanky.

I think my flip is more a result of not wanting to see the ball go right anymore. I also think I stall my turn to avoid the ball going left so I stop and the hands take over. Probably more of the latter than the former.

Both. It's not extreme but I definitely do both. Would this lead to early extension? I also kind of bend over in my back swing and then get taller at impact which I think is a large contributor to the misses.

It can if you steepen the shaft early in transition, so you then EE to shallow out. Adding more flexion instead of extending in the back swing can also largely result in the same thing. Neither of these things are alignment related.

I have been there. Heres what I did to fix it..

Its all about alignment vs intent. Where your feet are pointing vs where you are trying to hit it. On the range you kind of get in a groove and dont change targets much, so you start putting them right down the pipe every time. On the course now theres a fairway, you line up your feet/body to whack it down the middle but now your mind is lined up in the wrong in conjuntion to your feet... Insta hook.

To solve your problem you need to understand this dynamic fully. It will take several weeks to grasp it and learn the relationship between body alignment and mental intent (swing path).

What I imagine is happening on the course you just setup like you want to hit it down the middle, and your feet are pointing well left of fairway, you have created two lines of alignment. Feet are left and intent (aim/look/swingpath) is right of that line probably 20-40 yards in the fairway. This will produce a hook.

What I would suggest is that you make sure your feet are lined up right down the middle, and make your intent (aim/look/swingpath) 5 yards to the left of that line. This will produce a slight fade and get you back on track. Play with this Dynamic until you understand what angles you must use to produce the shot you want.
