Lamkin Grips

Recommended Posts

Killing time, I went into the PGATSS to browse, and I was pretty impressed with the Sonar TOUR grips. I play a Zcord now and hate that it chews through gloves at almost 1 per round. At best, I get 3 rounds out of my glove, FJ Pro FLX or Stasof (I'm LH so limited glove options). I like the grip on my Zcord but wanted something a touch softer, but wouldn't torque when contacting the ball. I guess another reason why I favor a firm grip.

Has anyone played these grips, and if so, what are your thoughts? Do they grip well when wet or humid? Do they wear out quick? And, are they tough on gloves?

Sonar or Sonar Tour?

I have the Sonar on my driver. Its a thicker grip and kinda cushion-like. I like it for my driver-only because it keeps my grip loose. I dont use it on anything else.

Molinari uses them on his clubs IIRC.

Good catch! Sonar TOUR. (editing now).

If a grip chews through your glove in one round then you are griping the club wrong.

Have you tried Lamkin UTx? Perfect blend of tackiness and cord so they are comfortable without sacrificing grip. They are somewhat firm when compared to other popular grips and they are durable. IMO, they do not give the slightest sensation of "twisting" typically associated with grips that offer additional layers of cushioning. With that being said, the Sonar Tour is the next grip on my radar.

I've used Lamkin grips my whole golfing life. I like them better than Golf Pride grips for my woods, irons, and wedges. Used Crosslines for a most of the time, but did use the UTx for a few seasons. Liked the texture and the cord, but recently switched to the Crossline Plus that's exclusive to Golf Galaxy. It's tacky with traditional Crossline pattern with the larger bottom hand. No complaints so far with them. Only complaint that I had with the UTx is that I got a wear pattern where my right thumb went on the grip (right handed golfer) on my clubs I use the most for practice. In fairness to the grip, I hit balls or play just about everyday during the summer.

I tried the UTx on some MD4's I had last year. I wasn't a fan, and thought for a cord they were slick. Also, they seemed to harden up and get slick faster than my Zcord. So unfortunately, they are not in the cards for me. But these Sonar Tours look and feel amazing. I was just looking for feedback on how slick they may be in wet weather. Or if they wear quicking. But, I guess since they are so new, it might be hard to find info on them.

They’re alright. I still prefer crossline cords, my go to.

I just put Lamkin Sonar on my Srixon irons and really love them. My previous grip was GP CP2 - so coming from the complete opposite spectrum compared to the Z-Grip, you prefer. The Sonar Tour offers everything, I want from a grip - less taper, stable feel, no need to grip tight, since the texture and the surface make up for decent grip already. Looking forward to playing them more, but to me, Lamkin has winner in their line again - finally.
