What a day! Jack Hamm

Got up early this morning. Could not sleep due to all the thunder. Let the dog out and it was weird, sky was clear. Threw the clubs in the car and headed 2 miles to my home course. I pulled in the parking lot and there was only one other car there. It looked like the car Boss Hog used to drive with the big horns on the front. Denver plates with the word hammer on them. Hanging from the mirror was a gold pendant that said 162. Not a vehicle you see every day. As I was heading to the range, I heard the thunder again but still, not a cloud in the morning sky.

I was curious as to who would own such a vehicle. As I got closer to the range I saw this giant of a man with flowing blonde hair. I just stopped and stared. He had his back towards me as he teed up a ball. In his hands was the weirdest looking driver I had ever seen and it had a bright red shaft. I knew this was something special. As he took the club back, all I heard was what sounded like a tornado. At the top, he paused and looked like a greek god. The downswing was pure power, intimidating to say the least. Between the impact of the ball and him yelling "POW" I instantly knew the "thunder" I had been hearing earlier. I could hear the ball flying through the air, similar to the sound of mountain monks meditating. The ball looked like it was going to land 1/4 mile away. Even though I wet myself a little, I did not care, this had the potential to be the greatest day of my life.

He saw me staring and held out this crazy driver. I grabbed it like I was grabbing Thor's hammer. It was tingling in my hands. I gave it back and mumbled "...do...it...again...". He smiled and told me to stand back. As he swung, I could feel all the nearby air rushing towards him. All the hair on my back stood up. "POW" and that ball was gone. As we gazed into each others eyes, the superintendent pulled up and told him he is not allowed on the range. I asked him if he wanted to play a few holes and we grabbed a cart.

The first hole is a long par 4 (458 yards). He saw the sign and just smiled. I hit a nice one down the middle but today was not about me. He teed it up and when I say he pounded this ball, that would be an understatement. He was still yelling "POW" as he put his club back in his bag. As we approached the green, there was his ball, pin high. I took a par and he had a 6'er for eagle. Ran the first putt past 8' and looked me in the eyes and said "I don't play golf to putt". 4 putts later he tapped in for a double. The entire time we played this hole I could hear Thunderstruck playing in the background but had no idea where it was coming from.

Second hole is a uphill 300yd par 4. This dude takes out a 6 iron and hits it on the green. He has a tricky 25'er and putts it off the green. He just picked it up and we headed back to the clubhouse. He did not say much. I pulled the cart up to his car and just stared at his golf bag. He noticed me and said "It can all be yours for 5 easy payments of $24.99". As he scanned my credit card, I did not even know what to say, the whole experience was surreal. He put his hand on top of my head like my grandpa used to do and rustled my hair a little then hopped in his car and drove away. I have seen a lot in my life; my children being born, tiger winning the Masters this year, some dude at Jackson Park bringing a squirrel back from the dead with his PW and Phil Mickelson dancing. Nothing, and I mean nothing beats what I saw here today.

Then the alarm clock rang and I woke up...................

Sounds like a great idea for a thread…………………..”guess who I played with.”

You write a story and people guess.

Here’s mine:

I awoke from a sound sleep which is strange ‘cause I haven’t been sleeping well lately. You know pressure at work, the kids and well……anyway. Went through my usual routine before golf, stretching, a high fiber breakfast and 15 minutes on the table with Suza, a former boulangerie owner from Belgium but now my in-home masseuse. A kiss for the wife and Suza, and I go to car. Clubs were loaded the night prior. I put them in the car the night prior to prevent pulling back muscle in the morning before golf. Read it in golf digest – good tip. I like to be prepared. Some say over-prepared. I tell them they are nuts. I am sane.

I get to the course and the parking lot is full but not overfull, you know kind of like a bag of chips that “experienced some setting in shipment.” A billow of smoke coming from the kitchen exhaust in the clubhouse – it was a familiar smell, that smell of morning food. The smell that hangs on you like a wet shirt. I knew who was running that grill that day – it was Pauline, a buxom woman around 64-69-ish. In her day she was golf hustler known for taking a sawbuck from Chi Chi for nine holes.

I never check with the starter – they know me here, and I know them. I get to the tee and standing there is a well-appointed player, probably around 6-foot 180. He was fit. He had a chiseled face and flowing hair under a hat, not a cap. He took back the driver and pounded one right down the middle, the shaft recoiled and bounced off his back. He had an appetite for winning. He spoke of an early aspiration to be a surfer. You could tell he was winner, successful on the course and in business, but suffered his fair share of defeats.
