Need Your Input - Creative Ideas Welcomed

WRX'ers,

For our 10 year anniversary, my wife and I were heading to Pebble for four days during the Veteran's Day Weekend (half off of our round at Spyglass for vets that weekend) with my parents watching our two kids. We came to the painful realization this evening that my step-mother's cancer will not allow her and my father to watch our kids and dog as originally planned, so we almost certainly have to cancel.

My wife keeps asking me what I'd like in lieu of heading to Pebble and this is where I'd like your input. She has suggested I still go, but there is no way I'd feel comfortable in doing that without her as she is a fine player and one day we'll get there I am sure.

Right now I am leaning towards just asking for a blank check for some new Blueprint irons, a new bag and a new wardrobe but that seems rather boring! I thought I'd reach out and see what you all think.

Figure the maximum amount to play with is $6K (Pebble trip) but I am looking to be a bit more practical and would like to start at $2K. So, there you go, $2K - $6K for golf, what would you all do? If travel is involved, it would be as a single and no more than two days away from Virginia.

Rain check. The anniversary is for both of you, not just new gear. I’d wait until things settle down with the parents, and/or look for alternative caretakers to reschedule the trip. Experiences are better than stuff.

You don’t say how old the kids are, but there are resorts that offer daycare/activities. Put the dog in boarding, take the kids with you to a family-friendly resort.

I'll second this suggestion.

Specifically, I'll recommend Pinehurst. When we went with the family we dropped the kids at the Kids Club, I went to the course, my wife went to the spa (non-golfer) and she picked the kids up after lunch and met me at the 18th green.

Congrats on 10 years!! Hire a sitter and take your wife out to a fabulous dinner. A new iron set will wear out, new clothes get worn or out of style. Make it memorable. If you're both avid golfers, I'd suggest getting some custom putters made, something that you'll never sell, even if it's not bagged it can be on display or roll putts on the carpet. And do something nice for your step mother that is going through a really rough time.

Then just go on the trip when she's better or someone else can watch the kids.
