How far do you travel for your golf?

Recommended Posts

Thought this would be an interesting conversation, as I for one am interested in the results here.

I live in Scotland, close to many good golf courses - I must have around 40 courses within 25 miles.

Some are very close to me, maybe 2 mins away - but I travel for 20 minutes to play at what I regard as the best one in the area.

Does anyone travel a long distance for their regular golf, not talking about away games as such?

I would be interested to see how the guys in the US compare to me in relation to travel time etc.

Great question, one that myself and my family are actively considering as we may be relocating to a different part of the US. We have been a member a private club for the last six years that is only 10 minutes from our house. Having a younger son who is an active junior golfer, that convenience has been key as we use the club 5 to 6 days per week when the weather accommodates. Given that golf has been such an integral part of our life, that is a factor in considering future homes as we want proximity to wherever we end up.

My club is 30-35 minutes from my house depending time of day and how many traffic lights I hit.

I live 141 miles (2 hours ish) from the course I grew up playing, and I still go back 2-3 times a month during the summer to golf. The course I am a member of now is a solid 15 miles south of town or so.

I live in Downtown Chicago. The nearest 18 hole course that's worth playing is 17 miles away. The drive for an early morning round on a Saturday or Sunday can take 25 minutes. Coming home it's 35 to 40 minutes with late morning/early afternoon traffic. I've played Chicagoland courses that are 55 miles from home. On average I'd say my "usual" courses are 30 miles, and I have to budget an hour of travel time each way to avoid rushing when I arrive.

When you factor in 90 to 120 minutes of travel time, one is quite sensitive to pace of play. A ridiculously slow 5 hour round is actually costing me 6 1/2 or more hours. I played one round a few years back that took 5 1/2 hours, and there was a traffic jam heading back into the city. I left home at 7:30 am for the 37 miles drive. I got back home nine hours later at 4:30 pm. Golfing after work is pretty much a no-go, as it usually takes more than an hour to get out of the city.

My wife and I joined a private club over 25 years ago, and its about a 35 minute drive from home. Although there were closer options, we couldn't afford them. Additionally, we joined our club just as it was opening, and it appealed to both of us to be in at the very start. Now there are more closer options, and we still wouldn't change. Lucky for me, my office is closer to the club than it is to home.

I used to drive about 45 minutes to play golf, that was long ago and solely because I loved the course, and the people I played with regularly.

Fast forward to now, only about 15 minutes commute to our regular Sunday course, though we'll drive up to about an hour to play some truly great courses here in the area.

My wife and I joined our club a little over two years ago. At the time, we were about 15 minutes away. We came to like it so much, and spend so much time there, that when we decided to sell the house and downsize last year, one of the first criteria was proximity to the club. We wound up just over a mile from the course, 3 minutes on a bad day from driveway to parking lot. Best thing we ever did.

I live <5 minutes from my home course and +/- 15 minutes from the two league courses I play weekly. When I lived in Palm Springs I was close to many courses so travel time has never been a factor.

My wife and I live 2-4 minutes from our club. 2 minutes if I get through the three red lights unscathed, 4 if I hit all or a portion of the lights.

I live in an area (southeast Missouri) that does not have a lot of good public golf. But, the best one just happens to be about 7 miles from my house and that is where I am a member. Lucky for me, it is a 4star course with a great membership rate. I feel very fortunate.

30 minutes from home. Club gets very little play and has a culture of fast play. Round trip from home with a 3 hour (or less) round beats going to the public course that is only 5 minutes from home by at least an hour. This is fine for most rounds , but I do wish it (or I ) were closer. Would be nice to pop over after dinner for a range session or 5 -6 holes...30 minutes away requires more planning. It is only about 10 minutes form the office though, so I do pop over for some balls, putting, or a quick 4 hole loop or so at lunch. If I were Moving, this would be a huge factor for mez. Have a junior golfer coming up so know that close proximity and availability would help that along.

My home course is about 10 minutes from my house and less than 5 from my office. It’s nice that I can pop over on my lunch hour and walk a small loop of holes and get back to the office in an hour. If I took a cart I might even be able to squeeze in 9 if they weren’t busy but haven’t tried this yet. Farthest I have ever traveled for 1 round was a little under 2 hours.
