Fair enough. However, announcers and conditions( above sea level, elevations) also skew the results.

Players are stronger nowadays, nobody use to pay attention to diet that much or go to the gym for that matter, now they all do. Also, the ball goes farther nowadays as well because it doesn't spin as much.

I've seen them many times. They hit a ball astonishing distances, driver in particular. The secret to their iron distance is they hit it very hard and very solid. But the quote was from an old time tour caddy.

Yep, they hit it hard and solid, combine higher swing speed and hitting the ball right on the button and the result is long distances, it's the reason they are on the level they are.

IF you're comparing pros from old to now the technology has drastically changed. Most pros don't play this jacked up lofted clubs but just the change in the golf ball technology alone is helping it go farther. That said there's been a strong push to maximizing the human performance in regards to nutrition and working out. A lot of the pros right now have way better access to information that can get the most out of their bodies to make the ball go farther and straighter. Back in the day the information wasn't there like it is now about what influences the club and body. Heck just inside the last decade they had to rewrite what made the ball flight laws true!

  • 1 year later...

I remembered those day when pga tour players hit their 7 iron 170 yards maybe 10-15 years ago but now even average length players hit it 180-190 and guys like DJ,Rory can carry it past 200 with little effort. Just wonder what's happening because blade iron doesn't seem to evolve very much right? Or today's players just getting much stronger?

I think the tiger dominating era inspired a lot of upcoming and young athletes back then to train just like tiger. Started lifting weights for golf and hiring nutritionists. Golf's ideal body was no longer a dad bod who enjoys a 6-pack beer during his round, but it evolved to a jacked-up posture with insane flexibility and balance. I think the best example is Rory Mcilroy.. started out skinny and became buff and jacked and started hitting insane distances.

But i feel like another factor in hitting it long is efficiency cuz a lot of my friends who are D1 college golf athletes are able to control their body rotation in their swing so efficiently that a 300+ yard drive seems effortless. While the average golfer can try to imitate the bryson dechambeau swing and swing it uncontrollably to result in a 100 yard slice LOL... I think pros are so advanced in their training that it allows them to hit the ball dead middle in the club face with a swing that is super balanced and optimized for distance.

Ohh and obviously club technology back then vs now is completely different..night and day..
