Main reason to play blades?

OK, I know I'm nowhere good enough to play blades. But I'm trying to understand why the people who do, do. Is the main benefit workability for those who can do that? Or, do you get better distance control, or less dispersion? I am positive I rarely hit the center of the face. My miss is hitting fat, so I'd probably lose 30% or more, of the distance that I get with an imperfectly hit shot on my GI clubs.

I do it for the enjoyment. Short irons and wedges I find more feel and accuracy.

I do it because that's what most clubs were in the 70's when I started - I still think simple is better BUT I'm biased probably!

For me, they are just more maneuverable. Better distance control too.

I get the feel argument. I have a Miura K Grind sand wedge and it feels wonderful. I can hit the center of the face on it, fortunately, and it's the only club in my bag where I can get the ball to check on the green.

For me, I've been exclusively using blades as my gamer clubs after using CB for a long long time. My swing improved a lot in the past year or two and hit the ball on the button much much more consistently so I choose to use blades mostly for feel. Looks cool in my bag too.

For many years, I couldn’t hit the blades so well until recently, and I love it after switched to Ben Hogan FT Worth Black to help my game with distance control, etc. by far compared to CB or bigger :( I am ready for MP-20 MB with 4/5 HMB!

My second set of clubs as a beginner were Apex Grinds.

Finally found another set this year and put the mp29s in my spare bag.

To me, Vokey wedges, e.g., 47* 50*, 52*, etc. feel like I am hitting blades and I am accurate with those and get good height into the greens. I use Mizuno blades in the PW thru 9 with similar results. That's why I started using blades in the higher lofted clubs - they just don't seem that difficult to hit and I like the way they feel better than GI irons. Six and 7 iron is a dual muscle Mizuno which I don't really consider a blade. Anything higher than 6 iron I use hybrids.

I first went over to blades after a lot of trial and error and the thinner soles worked a lot better for my swing and the ground conditions I played in. After I had them for a while I found I enjoyed the game a lot more as well, found it more satisfying

The first set of clubs my dad bought for me in the mid 80s was a cut down set of Nicklaus MacGregors. It had a persimmon 3W, then 9i, 7i, 5i blades and Bullseye style putter in this incredibly old bag. Pretty sure he got it from a garage sale or something.

Blades are just what I learned to play with. It's what I want to see and feel - it's totally that simple.

Because they are enjoyable to use and I like them.

Because they are sexier than a set of CGB XYZ v2 dot tour limited edition anything else.

because I can,

1) Looks good

2) Feel, well struck forged MB, feels better then a well struck cast or forged CB

3) At this time the pros & cons do not matter which set I play so I play what I like.

The day that distance or forgiveness is more important is the day I will keep switching all the way down to PW, for now though 4 & 5 Irons will be CB's and 6- PW will be MB's.

I game a set of '99 Ben Hogan Apex blades (3-PW). Not only do these blades look outstanding but they are relatively easy to hit. These are definitely not game improvement clubs but are not clubs reserved for a tour quality swing. I prefer blades because of great feel and the ability to better control the shape and trajectory of shots. The '99 Ben Hogan Apex blades are among the best blades I have ever played, and I have gamed a lot of different blades from several manufacturers.

I'm more accurate with them, and I score better with them. That's pretty much it.

I played GI irons for years and my iron game sucked. I played a round with my buddy's Titleist 680s and, surprisingly, didn't hit them nearly as bad as I thought. Mind you, I didn't hit them well, but I hit some good shots. And, every time I did, I thought "that was awesome!". Next round, I hit a few more good shots. Then a few more. Then even more. Before long, I started to believe that the blades were the reason for my improved iron play. Truth be told, my improvement was probably a combination of lower expectations coupled with the fact that I just enjoyed hitting them. Well, 15 years later, and I still enjoy them. Joy is why I play the game, so why should I switch for something more forgiving?

"Working the ball" with your irons is such a hoot. The ball hasn't moved the last 25 years. "Move" in this case is a poor strike.

Iron design has also minimized side spin.

Vanity and comfort are the only valid reasons. And, they are valid reasons.

The problem I always have with blades as a digger is turf interaction. Also clubhead stability, though the tungsten in some modern models solves for that. This is probably why the Ping blueprints are the first blade I ever really thought about gaming 4-Pw.

For me a few reasons.

They spin rate is where I need it.

I don't always release the club. The smaller size of blade helps that.

Less offset helps with my big left miss.

I will be buying the new MP20 MMC. See how that goes.

And the hosel is less prevalent than in other types... until they start putting grooves on the hosel, I will play blades.

Nothing looks or feels better than a hosel rocket off a premium forged blade.

Blades have a nice clean look and turf interaction, pretty consistent between different blades. It's the old saying a blade is a blade, they aren't really that different. I haven't played a blade set for years and I kinda want to go back but I've been spoiled by players irons so it's been a hard choice to switch. I don't want to lose distance and I think I probably would overall. I have a 6 iron blade in my bag that I hit on the range every once in awhile with my other clubs and I find that I tend to gravitate back towards my players 6 iron instead because it gives a little more confidence and stronger flight.

I go back and forth between blades and cbs. Currently hitting the cbs really well. Just something about the look at address and the ease of flighting the ball with blades that makes them so much fun to play. Sure my miss is a little worse, but not by much. Like someone else mentioned, I learned on blades so I just love the look and feel.

For me it’s distance control.

Overall dispersion (left to right as well as front to back) with better control of trajectory and that amazing feel also come into the mix.

Because I like the look and I'm good enough to play them. Truthfully, I don't think they are as scary as some think.
