The putter grip is the most important thing. Discuss.

Having bought and used an awful lot of putters over the last few months, I currently have 13 and have sold 6 in that time, having had just one 6 months ago, I feel that the grip on a putter is THE most important part of the putter.

I’ve found out I’m a fan of fat grips, everything falls into place relatively easily, no matter the type of putter, the toe-hang, the shape, but if the grip is wrong then I’m all over the place. Distance and lag putting is quite easy, and more importantly, consistent, when you have a grip that you agree with, not to mention direction.

The few occasions I’ve used a thin grip I’m miles off, a round grip rather than a pistol also doesn’t help.

I wonder, being a graphite shaft bloke, whether having a putter grip so thin (and IMO therefore clunky and hard feeling) has something to do with it.

Hmm.

It's whatever makes you feel the most confident in conjunction with a putter design that allows you to launch the ball the right amount with the face angle as close to square to target line as possible.

Not the most important imo but also can't be glossed over. It's part of the equation, not the entire thing.

I've used fat grips in the past, but don't have a lot of distance control with them.

I started using a Ping Fingerlock grip with 5 wraps under the grip on my Anser 4 BeCu. I also lengthened it to 36" and added about 2+oz of lead tape under the grip as well! It's amazing the difference how back-weighting the putter changes the feel. (And no, I didn't add any to the head. It's the standard weight that BeCu's came.)

Very interesting what works for people. I’m amazed you could get the grip on with 5 wraps!

I’m obviously coming from the position of rotation, rather than a single gamer, so that clearly must have an effect. Anyway, I’m putting a Piretti Fat Grip on the Cortino, which I used today, and chopping it down by an inch to match my others. It’ll still be a blade though, so it’ll be interesting to see how that affects it versus the strange feel it had today. Normally I can get the hang of a putter immediately, two or three holes, the only time I haven’t been able to is with a thin grip. Even on short putts of 4’ to 5’ I have really struggled on line and distance control comparatively. Too many swing thoughts probably.

I think a grip is important...but most important is practice. The best 2 putters I know have had the same putter for about 10 years and play with the stock grips that came with each putter

They have a consistent stroke and I'm not sure they even know you can buy aftermarket grips lol

100% correct---- I will add you need to use whatever grip is comfortable to your hands and or feel--- remember if you are not comfortable where the hands make contact this creates tension. And tension is not good anywhere in golf especially putting---- Trust me in the last couple of years I have had trouble putting and have tried every type grip. For me I went back to my roots with a regular old school rubber Lamkin grip. I was always a feel and instinct putter. Even went back to an old Bullseye to get my feel back--- I am of the school of thought to use what feels comfortable in your hands--- I do not care if it is a leather wrap or a grip as big as the exhaust pipe on a Mack truck. Whatever works for YOU---- Good Luck to you

Like it-- That is what I call super tuning a putter to fit your feel and needs. Shows how everyone is different too--- Me I got to feel the position of the head so backweighting does not work for me. Trust me I have tried it but it works for you so that is great

Garsen MAX or Garsen Edge are the only grips I've found which actually require that the player use a specific technique. For some players Garen's "thumbs to the side technique" is helpful to better putting.

Grips are huge of course. But there are lots of important things.

For example, I really like putters with flanges where I can line up the target lines on top and below. If I have the putter soled correctly, this ensures my eyes are over the ball. If the top alignment bar is parallel above or below the flange line, then either my eyes aren't over the ball or the putter is soled incorrectly.

Getting fit for the the correct lie angle solves the sole issue, leaving the lines to tell me if my eyes are right.

Grips are definitely important, not to mention the direction it’s in. Big grips throws my alignment off so I usually have to aim lower or adjust the ball closer to the middle of my stance. Because of my hand size I stick to smaller grips were I can hold them well. Switching putters with different grip requires me to reacquaint my self with an old flame, so practice is a definite must.

I remember back in the late 80's and early 90's Titleist had a putter line named "Dead Center" featuring a topline of two small parallel lines. The "Dead Center" concept was as you wrote, so the putters had a flange line which a player "centered" in between the two small topline lines.

I have had to have a Scotty Pistolero on every putter. Great pistol grip. I was trying to perfect my slight arc for years.

Then I started working with a teacher who doesn't care about perfecting a stroke. So i'm working on perfecting speed control, green reading, aim and impact. Then a buddy of mine got the Evnroll E5 or something that had a gravity grip on it. I rolled it a few times and now have them on both my gamers. This gravity grip is crazy good. Its not officially a counter balance putter but has similar qualities. My stroke feels super stable and effortless.

Putting being what it is, delivering a flat piece of metal perpendicular to the target line as often as possible, the grip is as important as one perceives it to be. Every putter has a method of swinging it that will accomplish that goal, the golfer's job is to either find the stroke to fit the club or the club to fit the stroke. If a certain grip or grip style allows the player to more easily achieve the stroke, fantastic. Other players derrive confidence from head shape or balance properties... Again the forces involved in putting are so minimal compared to what you are capable of imparting, concentration and focus are essential.

I use a round leather grip from the 50's. I have other putters with pistol grips. Im not a big fan of pillow grips, but I could probably use them if need be.
