Apex MB vs MP20 SEL

looking to change to a new set of blades and stuck between these ones. I’ve briefly hit both and found both are great but slightly different. I’m a 5 handicap with decent ball striking skills, not incredible

I found the MP20 to look awesome and the combo set makes sense.

However when i tried them i found the blades to require a very very precise strike to feel good. My miss tends to be toe-y, not sure if the MP20 CG is more in the heel.

The apex however were butter soft across a loonie sized strike pattern. A little thin, little high on the face, little toey still felt butter soft and springy, while the MP20’s felt a bit hard unless struck in a dime sized spot. They seemed overall a bit more forgiving and better feeling across the center of the face. The downside is the apex’s are a little more fussy in terms of combo sets (not sure i can reliably hit the apex in a 3/4 iron). Do i go apex ut? X forged? Apex pro? I also found the irons to be very low spinning. Very high launch, with low spin - i tend to be a lower spin player.

Also these irons have been out for a while so not sure if they are due for a refresh soon.

Anyone chime in on the mp20/apex MB debate?

I love the Apex MB. I wouldn't call them low spin but they do peak pretty high and they don't spin like tops. Some of the softest irons I've ever hit. They do seem to be reasonably forgiving for blades - certainly more so than my MB 716. Also a fair bit softer. If you really want to combo Mizuno could be the go but the Apex Pro in a 4 iron should do the trick. Basically though, if you hit them with the same shaft and did a fitting, and you hit the Apex better - the choice is easy.

He might be referring to the bounce and width of the sole. Some blades have zero bounce and super thin soles which requires precise contact. An adequate amount of bounce in critical to playability. I haven't hit the mizunos but can tell you the Callaways have great turf interaction. The Callaway MBs which I am currently playing (and currently selling on ebay) are great. They have forgiveness and are super soft. If you are dabbling in blades i'd go Apex MBs used/clean and then just re-sell if they aren't it. The Callaway MBs have been out since 2018 so you can get a reasonable deal on some in great shape.

went back an hit them today

Wow... mizunos are absolutely butter soft out of the very very sweet spot. I would say the mizuno feels better on pure strikes, but the callaway feels better overall around the center of the face including slight mishits. The mizuno’s had tons of feedback in terms of missed strikes (for better or for worse)

not sure if this is still up for debate but as I have referenced on another thread, I have played pretty much every blade ever made for a lefty and I am on my second set of the MB18's. They replaced my miuras and when it was time to replace the first set, nothing else came close so I bought a second set. If you are concerned about the 3/4/5 ten get the X Forged. I will tell you though that I have the MB 18 3-PW and I also bought the X Forged 3-6 "just in case" and the MB18 longs are in the bag and the X Forged are in the garage. There was no performance difference for me between the two and I just dont like looking down at a cavity back.

I mixed Apex MB 7-9 ironS with Titleist 716 AP2 4-6 irons and Mack daddy wedges 46,50 and 54. The AP2s and Apex MBs have the same lofts and blended very well without bending. Callaway x forged are 1-2 degrees stronger than the Apex MBs. I believe the Apex 2016 pros are the same lofts as the MBs but I preferred the feel, control and forgiveness of the ap2s vs the apex pro irons.
