Fried Egg Appreciation Thread

Inspired by the Podcast, who cares about hole-in-one’s, lets see your best fried egg experiences.

Not mine, but my playing partner today had this beauty, only took 3 swipes to get out:

That looks more like a buried lie than a fried egg.

That's when you put your hands in the air in surrender. Nothing you can do.

Negative. That would involve effort.

Don't know if this qualifies as a fried egg, but it's certainly a goose egg. My ball came to rest in an animal footprint near the top of the bunker. It was a good 3 feet above my feet.


I don’t have a pic but one of my greatest golf shots came from a fried egg lie. I was playing in the city match play and was one up one on the 18th tee. Hit a solid drive, as did my opponent. He put his second to about 15 feet. I caught an 8 iron a little thin and it plugged into the bunker face, short left of the green. I took a 50 degree wedge, closed the face and swung as hard as I could. The ball popped up just enough to catch the collar and rode a little ridge down to the edge of the cup. Nice easy tap in par to tie the hole and win the match.

On a true fried egg lie, not buried as like in the photo, a golfer should have only one intent, to just get it out.

A few years ago hitting into a short par 3, I hit a nine iron just short, and it buried deep into the sand right where the sand meets the face of the bunker on the upslope. I was actually lucky to find the ball, as it was buried 3 or 4 inches below the surface.

I declared an unplayable and dropped into the bunker, where I got a semi fried-egg lie (would that be a runny fried egg?).

Good times...

I was playing in the final of one of our club's most prestigious competitions last weekend, and we'd had some seriously bad rain the night before. Any other day and the competition would have been cancelled, but in the UK we're fast running out of decent days left to play in the year so the competition went ahead.

I was +4 going down 16 and hit a great drive down the middle. Second shot slightly uphill and very much into the wind. Decided against playing a full 9 and hit a knock-down 8 instead to take a bit of spin off the ball. Struck it so purely it spun up on me, pulled a little left and into the greenside bunker. There was a big pool of water in the bottom of the bunker, and my ball plugged so deep it was barely showing the top of the ball, right up against the lip. I took my stance and annoyingly was unaffected by the water. I tried widening my stance as far as I could legitimately stretch but couldn't quite reach the water with my feet, so had to play it.

I swung so hard and gouged it out, I took about 4" of sand from underneath the ball. It was almost like slow motion when I saw the ball pop out of the bunker and onto the green with a chunk of sand still attached. I ended up 3 putting and finished in 4th position by 1 shot.

Unfortunately didn't get a picture, but a video of the ball coming out would have been great!

To the OP, why didn't he just take an unplayable? There was no way he was getting that out in 1 shot, so it only makes sense to drop in the bunker.

Not a fried egg but a pretty tough lie. I guess that's what happens when you drive it left of left. I looked for that ball way more than the allotted time and my partner found it there.

Lousy job grooming the fairway bunker. Grrrr.

It was on the upslope, he could honestly could knock it on the green pretty easy (close is a different story lol)

I knew a guy who would plat buried ball lies in the bunker as shown in the first post with his putter.

Close it and swing it like a wedge. Amazing results every time. We had at least 6 bunkers that looked like that.

Lucky for me this was ground under repair. Stilled was called Squirrel killer for a few weeks after
