??? TM coming out w/P790 Game Improvement Irons with Tungsten for $2,800(steel)/$3,000(graphite)?

Recommended Posts

Just saw this article and did a double take in regards to the price and that (supposedly) for game improvement irons?

**TaylorMade P790 update** – Ed Travis Equipment blog By Ed Travis

[golfoklahoma.org/taylormade-p790-update-ed-travis-equipment-blog/](http://golfoklahoma.org/taylormade-p790-update-ed-travis-equipment-blog/ "golfoklahoma.org/taylormade-p790-update-ed-travis-equipment-blog/")

First offered in 2017 the P790s have been the best-selling iron model in TaylorMade Golf’s history and now they have not only announced an update but added a new titanium model. Both the updated P790 and all new P790 Ti borrow heavily from the preceding model which many low handicap players and professionals considered to be among the best, if not the best, performing irons in the industry.

The forged hollow body steel P790 has a 7 percent thinner face and to counter the tendency for long irons to hit the ball to the right, TMaG’s Progressive Inverted Cone Technology (PICT) is moved towards the toe in the lower lofts. As with the original model, foam is injected inside the head to dampen vibrations and improve impact sound plus support the face for more ball speed. The new model also uses the familiar Thru-Slot Speed Pocket to allow the face to flex more which also adds to ball speed. The tungsten sole weighting has been increased by 15 percent lowering the center of gravity further and making it possible for excess weight to be removed from the toe.

According to the company, “To improve on an iron as successful as the original P790, engineers faced the challenge of taking everything learned from its design, refining and emphasizing many of the unique design elements that made it so successful without drastically changing its DNA. The result is a forged iron that continues to deliver remarkable distance and playability combined with exceptional feel in a medium-compact head design with a refined topline, more compact blade length and reduced offset preferred by discerning players.”

A new driving iron was also introduced the P790 UDI (Ultimate Driving Iron) with a redesigned metal injection molded (MIM) tungsten weight that raises the MOI for better resistance to twisting.

However, the more significant announcement was the ultra-premium P790 Ti which puts TMaG squarely in that evermore crowded higher price end of the market. Unlike some manufacturers whose ultra-premium models make use of cosmetics to rationalize double or more the usual prices the P790 Ti justifies its pricing because the body is made of titanium. Titanium is more expensive than steel and more difficult to work with, but this new blade proves the advantages.

Inside the head is a massive tungsten weight of 117-grams or nearly half of the head’s mass putting the P790 Ti solidly in the game-improvement category. Compared with the first P790 head shaping is different with a 2mm longer blade, 2mm taller face and increased offset complemented by a wider sole with additional bounce. The titanium body is much lighter and stronger while the face is thinner with a bigger sweet spot while utilizing TMaG’s Thru-Slot Speed Pocket. Ball speed is improved since the flexing area of the face was increased plus consistency was improved.

TaylorMade said in the product announcement, “A complement to the P790, the P790 Ti was designed from the ground up to be an extreme performance P·790; a game improvement iron loaded with technology packed into an aspirational players’ preferred shape while maintaining the critical ratios between blade length, offset and topline width.”

I betcha they still sell at that price. They’re not for me, but there will be plenty of people with deep pockets and a burning desire to brag about their golf clubs.

I don’t get it why it’s an issue? The point of the number on the club is to know what you’re hitting and it’s up to you to know how far it goes.

Now it's making perfect sense why people are buying 5-PW sets, just use a sharpie and correct ~~5-iron~~ to 3-iron, ~~6-iron~~ to 4-iron and so on.... big gap at the bottom.

until people under stand the concept of distance gapping these sorts of products will continue to sell.

yeah your pitching is going 140, but your gap wedge is going 100. Oh and your "5" iron goes the same distance as your 3 hybrid.

edit: I realize the absurdity around these are the price, but the driving marketability factor of these is distance.

Why would a 49* GW go 40 yards shorter than a 43.5* PW?

I get what you are saying, but it's really not about the number on the club anymore. At first it was okay, your 7 iron is really a 6 iron and you need a GW between PW and SW, but now its gotten out of control. The problem is the degree gapping tends to get really wide as you get to the short irons and wedges and really tiny when you go the the long irons. In the GI market, most players dont have the swing speed to differentiate the 4 and 5 iron. Those nearly become unplayable. And on the flip side you have 5.5 degree gaps between the AW, PW, and 9 iron. Alot of players are going to see wild gaps here, and these are the scoring clubs where distance and precision are key. You basically end up losing a club with the scoring clubs. Here's what I mean.

Take for example the Mizuno MP-20 HMB irons.

983phw0n7pmk.png

These are the clubs in two sets between 32 and 50 degrees. You get an extra club with the Mizunos. If you know your yardages, decisions are easier to make on approach shots. You are less likely to be inbetween clubs and have to play some sort of feel shot either choked down or swinging out of your shoes.

The jacked loft thing is a horse that’s been beating dead thousand times over. If you don’t like how far the club goes or that you need more wedges instead of hybrids and woods then don’t buy the clubs an find something that suits you. Who cares what’s in someone else’s bag or if they have a gap issue or whether they know they might have one.

More of a scenario when using a non-set gap wedge. I was thinking either 50 or 52. Set wedges tend to be hotter off the face.

maybe they are just meant for senior golfers who have lost 1/2 there distance over the years. When I started playing my grandfathers PW was 145 and now it’s 85. I thought maybe giving them to him as a gift to get some distance back. I don’t understand how they are going to market these to the avg golfer who knows anything about gapping. Why would I pay extra money to make more problems than good?

Can't figure out how there aren't any reviews in there. Not keen on dropping $25k on a 6 club set without at least reading some reviews first...

Other than removing a hybrid for a wedge what problems would one have?
