My new project

Found my new project. Raw Vega VC-03 irons, unstamped. I had a set of these at one time and loved them. I consider myself luck to find these. Now, should I plum brown these, oil quench, or just leave them be to rust?

And of course I find these right after I got done with my last project! New Level 902!

Any special plan for shaft/grip/ferrule? They look really nice.

I'm sill trying to figure out shafts. Any recommendations on grip and ferrule?

I was going to go with the trusty CP2 wrap, but open to other suggestions.

A head set like this Vega deserves the best as grips, and thats Leathermaster

They dont make a size large enough for me, thats the only reason for why i dont play them,

I actually haven't hit the New Levels. Haven't hit a golf ball in about a month and a half, so I have the Vegas, the new Levels, and a set of Fourteen TC888 that haven't seen dirt!

They look great!

Can't fault the Leathermaster rec's. I am partial to black with red accents as a color scheme. So black shaft, black ferrule with a red stripe and a red&black Golf Pride New Decade grip (or Winn Dri-Tac as another option).

Stupid me...the name is Gripmaster, but i guess the point was taken.

They do have models with Color on tip and butt like this one if Red or Blue is wanted, but they also deliver Tan for the whole grip.

Super comfort and tacky no matter weather conditions, and LONG lasting. I only sold a few sets of them, and one of them was more than 5 years before change was a subject.

Question: Can you explain the process used above "oil quenching". Is it as easy as letting the raw heads sit in motor oil?

You have to head the heads, then dunk them in motor oil.

I used a propane torch and got them really hot. The trick is to heat evenly. You can tell in the pics where I kinda messed up. After I felt it was hot enough, I dunked it 5W30 for about a minute.

Thanks. Could you possibly heat them in oven to get a more even heat? Or not hot enough? Also, does this finish wear and need to be redone?

Black and let them rust. Loved my rusty MB2’s back in the day before kids when I could hit them consistently.

Given your choice of CP2 wrap and I am assuming with the blue accent, I pick the top link.

No, you heat metal up to open the pores and then let it cool in the oil. Repeat.
