Review of Birdie Ball putting green

Recommended Posts

Have had it for a month now. Bought 3 x 18 double depth and got the 2 foot upgrade, so 3 x 20. Medium speed.

Set up was about an hour. Recommend tweezers to separate the double side tape, otherwise easy.

It seemed a little cheap coming out of the box, but fear not. It looks good once set up and It rolls great. Rolls about 9 one way and 10 the other way.

If you care about looks a lot the side bumpers wound probably give it an ever better look.

Would recommend.

I received one this week and have already sent it back. It will not be able to stand up against our crazy toddler. It did roll nice, but I need something more durable. I have ordered a Big Moss to replace it.

For anyone that has a Birdie Ball I'm looking at possibly getting a putting green for my basement but I have 2 issues.

My basement is on carpet and i've heard carpet can really slow/change the feel of some greens. Does anyone use their Birdie Ball on carpet or another brand on carpet?

My next issue is I need to roll it up and wondering if it can be rolled up after use?

I also usually Play slow greens but that is actually why I wanted something fast to practice on. Plan is that when I go on buddies trips to nice courses I am not totally thrown off by fast greens.

Try brushing the grain up and putting against it.

Thanks it's pretty old and worn carpet, in a high traffic area of my small basement so ball rolls no problem.

I had s birdie ball that I sold off. I found it was difficult to roll up and put away. It would take a while to flatten out after I did. It was also a sports foamy material which my cat liked to destroy.

Imo if you are looking for a mat to be rolled up and pulled back out you should get a different mat.

I have had a Big Moss for about 3 years now that I put directly on-top of the carpet. Roll it up when not in use. Highly recommend looking into a Big Moss.

Hopefully this isn't a silly question... but if my main goal is work on setup and stroke (starting the ball online) would faster or slower green speed make any difference? I am leaning towards a fast speed birdieball, as I struggle when I play tourneys on quicker greens. But if i can get a medium and speed it up by brushing it, that's worth consideration..

If having a square face at impact to get the ball rolling online is your main goal, the green speed won't make a difference but fast greens show your mistakes more easily, so for practice, using both the fast and slow would be wise. For example, switch to faster when you are playing a tournament that weekend, slower when playing a normal round.

For those that have the standard thickness Birdie Ball putting green, do you think a stance mat is needed? I'll be using in my basement on indoor/outdoor type of carpeting. I'm not worried about my stance wearing out a spot or two on this old carpet. I am more concerned if practicing on a 1/2" raised putting surface will create compensations when I'm on a real green.

I'll comment on a few questions from above. First, its terrible on carpet. I have hardwood floors on the whole main level and carpet in the basement. So naturally I wanted to put it in the basement to keep people off my putting green. It did not work at all on carpet. I mean useless did not work. Just completely ruins the roll which is otherwise fantastic. Moved it up to the hard floor, rolls fantastic.

Second, the putting surface is kind of delicate when it comes to kids and pets. My dogs made all kinds of marks and little holes in my first BB green. So that is something you have to take into account. Just normal walking on it is fine but when the damn dogs tore across the floor to bark at the UPS guy they'd leave marks. Now all the kids and animals have moved on so I leave it on the hardwood floor without issue.

Id recommend getting the longest and widest one you can afford / have space for in your area. This is my second one and I went 3' wide instead of 4' and kind of regret going thinner. While its fine the thinner width doesnt quite roll as smooth as the wider one. Its kind of hard to explain but the wider mat allowed for it to lay completely flat and roll more true. I went with the 3' wide x 10' length with the edge pieces and 3 holes total. When you put the edge pieces on it makes the edges stand up a little higher and the roll gets weird. Take them off and the ball likes to wander too much and fall off the sides. But they look great, lol

Speed is great. I got the medium and its plenty fast with one direction really fast the opposite way a little slower. I also got one hole on one side and two holes on the other side. I got the edge guards all around but Im not using them because they make the edges stand up higher than the middle of the green. I also got the bag to store it in which I haven't used because of the pandemic and being home so much. Rolling it up does kind of suck and its a pain in the arse. If you do roll it up, roll it with the putting surface on the outside that way it lays flat when you unroll it. No waiting for it to lay flat. I do not think a stance mat is needed, IMO. If you get a really thin width then maybe it could be useful.

Let me know if you guys want to see it, pretty sure I have some pics on my phone.

I did not like the Perfect Putt mat at all. I sent mine back and ordered the Birdie Ball which is way better. I think the only reason those Perfect Putt mats are popular is because they sent them out to all the influencers for free and everyone sees them. Its good if you have a really small place for your mat, I guess. Its pretty cheap and doesn't roll as nice as the BB.

I've seen a ton of Perfect Putt videos where the ball looks like it's missing then curves into the hole. Doesn't look like a good flat roll.

I've had a Birdie Ball for around 5 years. It does seem cheap when you unbox, it's basically pool floatie material but the roll is really great. Mine is trashed after having the neighborhood kids beating it up in my unfinished basement, but I'd consider purchasing another. Leaning towards a Wellputt Start or 13' at the moment.
