Black Lab Putters

Recommended Posts

Just call Chip @ 912-303-9650 and visit with him about them. He's built my clubs since '07 and one of the best people I've ever met. As far as BL Putters, you'll be hard pressed to find another brand that offers as good a putter for the price.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

Yes, Black Lab is still around. Awesome putters for the money.

Chip is a stand up guy and knows golf equipment. He's also a fitter / dealer for Miura and he also usually has several Tad Moore heads around his shop that he finishes up and sells. Also had some old Toulon heads.

I have picked up several putters from Chip over the years. I was just in his shop a few days ago to purchase some grips and I picked up another putter that he made under a different label that he is calling "Tuxedo". They are simple designs, carbon heads with nice face milling, mine has a welded neck and a beautiful BOS oilcan finish, and the ball coming off the face feels like butter. I threw an IOMIC grip on it (you have your choice of grips) and these are very reasonably priced (110.00+). His Black Labs are also nicely priced (300.00+) and are some of the best values on the market today for a milled putter IMHO.

Look up Chip Usher Golf in Savannah GA. He also sells stuff on eBay under the name: chipaputt

What is the cost to stop in, get fit, and get a fully custom putter. Really like his stuff and I am planning on being in Savannah around the new year. Thanks!

Doesn't cost anything to stop in, but I'm actually not sure what Chip charges for a fitting. I already know how I like my putters set up and I liked his standard putter spec's as far as loft and lie are concerned so I didn't mess with that. You can order his Black Lab heads in your preferred weight (I have a BL-1 in 350g and a BL-2 in 340g), you have different finishes to choose from (mostly from BOS), you can get any length shaft you want (of course), and you can pick from different grip selections. You can also pick out how you want it stamped. Chip has quite a few stamps to choose from.

Chip does custom club fittings but I honestly don't know what he charges for a putter fitting. Might want to give him a call and ask.

I have a BL-7 that Chip made center-shafted for me. I like it very much, really fits my eye. I does have a slight pinging sound when hit, more of a "tuning-fork" effect. No worse than a putter with a sound slot.b71z3eogk7mp.jpg

I have read that carbon steel is softer, so it might mitigate this....... Thanks!!! I will call Chip.

Anyone have thoughts on stamping? How do I personalize it without making it un-sellable?

Perhaps I have to decide if I want to buy a putter to be burried with, or a putter I want to own.

Basically any dates or initials kills value. Any random words or sayings also hurt but not quite as bad. Luckily chips putters aren't crazy expensive.

  • 2 weeks later...

I just wanted to say that I don't know Chip personally and do not own a Black Lab putter.

But I was in a winter bind and he went and helped me via email on a putter conversion I'm doing on my own. I probably bounced 10 emails off him looking for help and wasnt even buying gear from him...

If his equipment is even close to his customer service I can't imagine there being anybody better out there.

Its hard to find a good spot to post positive feedback but I just hope one person reads this and considers his gear down the road. I know I will.

I picked this BL-1 up from bst. I've been a long time Newport Studio Select user (2010 model) and have had a Mills Professional, Toulon Austin, and several Odysseys. The carbon steel BL-1 is the best feeling putter I've ever tried.

I love it. Makes me want to order a BL-2 and a BL-7 and get rid of everything else I own. JK I won't do that, but this is definitely making me want a matching BL-2 shape. Gah

Had a BL7, LOVED the shape and the single offset shaft, but the sound..... I couldnt take it. I emailed Chip about it a couple days ago and he got back to me right away but stated he has changed nothing about the putter so the sound would be most likely the same. Bummer.
