Anyone out there using a 7-wood?

About 1.5 years ago when I got fitted I asked if I could try a 7-wood (Callaway 'Heavenwood') that I tried at a Demo Day and the fitter was more than pleased. I just love this club, and get it up high and go over things. This weekend alone, my 2 best played holes , the 7-wood took a prominent role. One was a par-4 that I went way way left on my drive and into the adjoining fairway (trying to get over a far away large tree, but left the face open...I'm a lefty)...this left a pond followed by a big stand of trees in my way before getting to the green and this was all uphill with green about 15-20 feet higher than where I was at my ball. The nice thing about the 7-wood, is I can hit it hard and go higher but not necessarily lose it too long....so uphill, I had about 160 to hole, I went over pond, over the stand of oak trees (ball was really high) and playing partner said "you're going to like this one" but I knew he couldn't see the elevated green surface, maybe just the trajectory of the ball falling. Sure enough, ball is pin high about 10 feet and made birdie putt.

Other shot was 18th hole, dogleg left, put my drive nicely past the dogleg, had 200 to the pin (I didn't have to carry it that far as the first half of the green is a higher level and I knew most balls will roll out, hit the mid slope, and carry down to the pin on the back side of the green. Had a 4-iron in my hand, and then put it back for the 7-wood, had to hit it just right since was on the short grass fairway.....opened my stance a little because I've been pushing fairways left a bit (I'm a lefty).....hit it perfectly down the middle, landed softly onto the front edge of the green, maybe 10-15 feet on, but ran out about 15-20 feet, enough to reach the mid-green ridge, and rolled about 15 feet from the pin....my putt just missed the edge and made par. My fairways are 5- and 7-woods, love them both. Every so often I keep taking the 3-wood out for a spin, but it's like it's a different animal, can't hit it anymore....got to be something that I'm doing, surely (Henrik Stenson, how do you hit that thing so well?).

I have a 21 degree 915F right now, and think it is OK. At this loft, I am kind of indifferent between the 7-wood and a hybrid, as I think each have some pros and cons and it really depends on the specific shot. That being said, I like having two clubs of the same model/shaft/feel etc (16.5 and 21 degree). I was previously playing a 22 degree hybrid and one thing I didn't like is that I could go many holes or rounds without hitting it and then it is just strange (not bad but just different) looking down at.

I will probably change out the bag sometime soon. I'm not sure if I'll stick with the 7-wood or not. I would like to keep all hybrids or all fairways. I am just worried I cannot hit a hybrid with anything in the teens loft well enough.

I played an old Lynx 7-wood for the better part of 15 years, since I was a teenager. Was my favorite club in the bad for many of those years. Unfortunately, as it was starting to fall out of favor with me the head flew off and into a pond directly in front of me. Figured it was fate and haven't replaced it.

I've carried an old ('07) Exotics CB2 7WD (21*) for the past decade. Depending on the time of year and course I'm playing I interchange the CB2 & 4-iron. It seems I've been bagging the siete' more lately.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

I play a Ping G30 7w set at 21 deg and LOVE IT. I have slow swing speed and the 7w seems to give me better contact and distance than my 4w. Tried several hybrids in same loft range but tended to pull hook them - not so with the 7w. Glad I picked it up last year on eBay - its a keeper.

Just an older guy with 7 or 8 clubs and a MacKenzie Sunday Walker bag

I have a KZG 7W, a 23* Gemini. Easy to hit, good distance and tight dispersion. Almost irrelevant to this discussion because they're hard to find. Not in my main bag but I'll never get rid of it or the other Geminis.

I do and it was simply my favorite club in the bag this year.

I used to struggle with approaches or par 3's in the 175 to 180 range. This was the answer

I never had a 9-wood. Maybe I'll try one myself. My 7-wood plays heads better than any of the fairways and I'm also good with the 5-wood but the 7-wood is easier to hit, high and soft; if the 9-wood is that much better, I'm all in..

I've been struggling with my hybrids for a while (2017 M2, 19 and 22 degrees). Found a Callaway Big Bertha Diablo 7w (22 degrees?) used a few weeks back. First time out I decided immediately to kick out both hybrids. Ordered one of Hireko's new XDS 25 degree 9 woods and replaced my 2017 M3 5i. I now go 12 degree driver, 4w, 7w, 9w, 2017 M3 6i-AW, 52, 56, 60.

I was an 18.2 index prior to the changes. I shot a 12.6 differential prior to the last revision and my index dropped to 16.8. I shot an 8.3 differential the other day and my trend index is now showing 15.7. I attribute those improvements pretty much all to these club changes, as this is where I was having the most difficulty. Previously if I was at hybrid or 5i distance, I'd either end up splitting the distance with two shorter irons, or attempting the shot and usually ending up in worse shape than if I'd taken the two short irons. I'm now hitting greens from those distances, or just off in a position to be able to get up and down.

I play a 915 7 wood.

love it because I hit it like a iron so I can stick a green from 200 out.

Absolutely. And they are gaining popularity on tour as well (Howell, Jimanez, Stallings). I love my 917 F2 21 degree. Distance of a 3 iron with the spin of a 5 iron and even higher peak. Can drop it on a dime. Phenomenal from the rough as well. Right now I'm loving the Titleist U-500s, but I expect to be swapping my 917 F2 4 wood and 7 wood in and out with the U-500s from round to round depending on course and conditions.

I just got 2 new clubs during 'Black Friday' sale on Callaway Pre-owned. Have always found the 'like new' to be just that and they had a Buy-1-Get-1-Free sale, that I hit up twice. First time for an Odyssey Stroke-Lab putter (double wide for me, and free Seven for my son), and then I went back for a 5-wood and 7-wood adjustable Big Bertha (2015) for $125. And hit them beautifully. That 7-wood (Heavenwood) goes up nicely and lands so softly....been wondering about a 9-wood even (Divinewood?)

I have completed eight seasons carrying a 4W + 7W. For me, my XRail 7W gets the ball out of summer rough much better than a hybrid, and is a good club on tight driving holes, or longish par 3 holes.

Be aware that several tour players use 7Ws:

Jason Dufner carries a 21° Titleist 915FKeith Mitchell carries a 21° Titleist TS2.Scott Stallings carries a 21° Titleist 917F2.Stallings said this in a Sept 2019 Golf Digest article (p. 36):

"My 7 wood is a more versatile than a utility iron. I can hit it high or low, and the height on full shots into par 5s is so helpful, especially when you're coming in from 240 to 260 yards. I've found a utility 2- or 3-iron doesn't stop very well from that distance."Golf writer Jonathan Wall noted Tommy Fleetwood used a Ping G410 7W the past summer, dropping out his old Nike 5W to make room for it. Bubba Watson and Marc Leishman likewise have used a 7W on occasion.

I've played 7 woods off and on for 40 years. Lofts and lengths and head size for that "7 wood" designation have shifted like all others.

But...the Cally Heavenwood is not a "7 wood". Sure, it has a similar current day "7 wood" loft at stock loft, but standard length is current 3 woodish with a 3 or 4 wood head size. I've read posts that some folks play it as a 4 wood. Cally does make non-adjustable 7 woods in the same lines, with a more (modern) traditional head size and shaft length.

I tried a couple of the Cally Heavenwoods but not for me, a combo of shaft feel, length and head size.

But... I love my Ping G 7 wood.
