Best lob wedge for firm, tight bunkers?

What're everyone's thoughts? My home course has incredibly inconsistent bunkers with the majority of the time being firm and tight lies. The type of lie where it feels like there is sand underneath and as you hit the shot you can hear the sole bounce off the bottom of the sand.

Looking for a wedge that will help reduce that bounce. I understand low bounce will probably work best.

Anyone with experience have some recommendations?

I would think your Eye2 would be great, as the heel is ground off of it. Might also try the Vokey L grind or the Ping TS grind.

Don't confuse bounce with grind, they work together to create the right wedge.

My course is the same as sometimes after a hard rain it will take a few days to get them all back to normal. I have the Ping Glide 2.0 Stealth wedges and they are awesome for every condition. When I have the lies your describing I use my 58* with 6* of bounce, don't open it up and just take a normal swing depending on the distance.

Do you open the face of your wedge in the bunker? If so that will increase bounce angle. In firm bunkers I try to play a square face and use my 60. The other option is to use a low bounce “sweeper” type of sole that has little camber and thinner sole. Ping’s TS grind and Vokey L grind would be good options to try.

When playing in firm sand as the OP described I do not open the face.

I don't know about best, but I often face hard and wet bunkers and have had good results with the Vokey 62 M grind. I love that wedge grind, but I did put in a good bit of practice using it in different conditions and lies. If I get too square with it, sometimes it will dig too much.

I am a horrible bunker player but have found the most success with my Mack Daddy Pm grind 58

Vokey 60 degree L grind with 4 degree bounce.

Personally don't think you need low bounce for this shot. Just don't open the face as much, if at all. Try not to short-side yourself into firm bunkers.... and if you do, you might need to accept a really good result is anything inside 15ft. Bunkers are meant to be penal, ya know. It's all part of properly managing the course.

I use a Vokey V-grind, which is a high bounce wedge. Open the face skyward, ball off left armpit and keep follow through low.

Thanks for all the replies! I just bought a SM5 62T from eBay. Seemed like a decent deal for the condition. We'll see if I can get out before the weather turns too cold here in Ohio

Care to elaborate? It seems to me the wider toe section may lend to more bouncing out of firm conditions?

I find the Vokey K grind is good from all conditions of bunkers.

K is good for fluffy bunkers... not so for firm/mud bunkers

Play it square with 4 to 6* of bounce ... not too much shaft lean.

Thats interesting. I’m not to knowledgeable on the toesweep but I thought it was designed to be opened up in more fluffy bunkers? No?

I have a 62 degree Vokey SM7 (M grind, 8 degrees of bounce) that is money in those situations. Great in firm situations with the blade slightly open, and if the sand is both hard and wet, I'll square it, or even toe-in and just dig it out.

Redundant post on this thread now, but cleveland's rtx 4 is known for its low bounce wedges. If anyone needs a wedge for their next Links golf adventure in the summer when the fairways are as tight and firm as can be - the X low is for you, at a shocking 3 degrees of bounce. Otherwise don't ever get it unless you're ultra shallow and almost never take a divot.

I go with more loft and close the face to reduce the bounce so that the club will not skip off the "hardpan" surface underneath. For a while I even carried a 64 degree for this purpose, because when I closed the face I was basically hitting a 58 or 60 degree wedge.

Personally, I have two thoughts on this:

1.) Do you play the vast majority of your golf on this course or do you travel and play other courses or tournaments throughout the year. If you do play multiple courses, I would suggest either having a 2nd wedge or making sure you buy something really versatile. Obviously, if you only play one course for 90% of your golf, buying one wedge that is specific to those needs is fine.

2.) This could be a great opportunity to learn a few techniques if you have the time to learn. While lower bounce can absolutely help with this shot, you can play it with a more bounce quite easily. My regular course has firm/too little sand and you can play this shot with both a wide open face or a more square face depending on what technique feels most comfortable. Typically, I play it with the face open and hit down with a bit firmer strike. The other option is to play it more square wish more of a sweeping swing. Both are made difficult because of the firm sand scenario. Any time you have firm sand, the entry point is extremely important. Both techniques work - it's really personal preference but quality results can be achieved with multiple amounts of bounce.

For what it's worth, I use the Ping Glide 2.0 Stealth Standard Sole and have had zero issues with both the 54 and 58.
