I am stuck between a rock and a hard place, my last putter was the odyssey stroke lab 7, but I normally play with a blade type of putters before I picked up the odyssey. I just recently got rid of the Odyssey leaving me with no putter! I have been searching for hours on what is best to invest in. I had my eye on this Scotty Cameron squareback putter 33.5 inches. I was just about to buy it when I saw in the corner of my eye someone using a mini spider putter from Taylormade. So I asked him if I can try a hit because I have always wondered why these weird mallets are so popular. after one putt I was simply amazed, I have never had a ball roll so much, there was no dragging, there was no sidespin, it was just a pure beautiful roll. The issue is, I only asked the guy to try for one putt, I don't want to leave my decision based on one putt, and especially if it was only the mini version spider, I can only imagine how the new spider x must feel and perform compared to the Scotty squareback or the newports. Can someone you guys just post some thoughts or statements on what you would prefer and why? what makes these two putters so great?

Depends on how your putt. I use a Scotty mallet and really like it. The reason I went to this was the Newport blade I was using didn’t fit my stroke properly (I had modified length so it’s possible loft and lie were off) but essentially if I had a line at my target it would wobble slightly. Switched to 5.5M and I roll it straight every time. Best to buy, try, and assess on course then make changes after you’ve spent some time with it. FWIW I’m not a TM fan and the Spider X is a fantastic putter.

I started my life until the last year playing only blades. I played an Anser style for YEARS! I subbed in a Ping Zing style for awhile. As my eyesight changed as I got older I found it more and more difficult to align the smaller putters. No matter what neck or style I tried I just could not align the small front to back footprint putters correctly. Right now I am alternating between a Spider X and a Mannkrafted Bi-Metal mallet. Both have a short slant neck (a-la the Zing) so it gives them some toe hang (I cannot putt with a face balanced putter) and I have been putting much better.

Now to the fact you saw the ball rolling much better off of a mallet.....

The naked eye won't see a difference in two putters that are both fit for you in their roll. So more than likely the better roll from the mallet is that the loft/lie/toe hang were a better fit for you. A blade type putter fit for you should roll the same (undetectable differences with the naked eye).

Roll boards, SAM putt LAB, slo-mo video recording and other things can show you what the naked eye can't see about how quickly the ball begins to roll.

Most of the times it is not easy to select a putter as you have to tick so many boxes. Both models you mentioned have heaps of fans but it will be you and only you that will see and feel what it’s right for you.

I had putters that in the store worked amazingly, then I learned how some shop’s putting greens are dodgy to influence the purchase lol. Also a couple of times I got fitted to putters that didn’t work on the course, yes, wasted money.

If you have the opportunity, test the putters in a golf club practice green, putter must be comfortable to your eye and easy to align with a good roll. You’ll fall in love with the right one and process is done, some will say all good for a week or two when you find another putter you may like lol

The greens at shops are always funny, there is one I go to, has multiple holes and a lot have lines you take it's pretty much in the cup if the weight is right. So there is one that like 20-25ft, I know this line like the back of my hands and can sinks putts like nothing. I'll putt on this line a lot because I like how I can track the roll for 20-25ft but still fun sinking those long putts like nothing too.
