Yeah, I would certainly call that naive. Is there anything in life that is a true meritocracy?

Also, this appears to be at Amherst (I don't have an NYT subscription so I can't read the article) - not exactly what I would call a sports powerhouse - so I am sure they are interested in something other than simply winning.

Crap like this makes me want to throw up. Who measures foolishness like race of an athlete? Who really cares? At the end of the day, it isn't about race. It is about PARENTING!!! Kids that have Parents that actually PARENT are the ones with the advantage. Is there anything wrong with that? It isn't the collegiate system or government's problem to solve. It is the communities problem to solve. Recruit the best kid possible and take the kids with the best grades possible into the University system. Everything should be based solely on the merit of the individual whether acceptance to a school or being hired into a job.

I am GenX.  If you really think I care about what you have to say, I don't.

Amherst Mens Soccer, which the article is mostly about, went 14-0-2, I'd say winning is on their minds...

Actually did read the entire article.

My statement does not reflect the article. I have a background in education as does my wife, father, mother, grandmother and the list goes on. Lack of Parenting and proper Guidance is why kids don't make it. Kids excelling in school is work for parents. You don't get into college anymore with a 3.0 and 1100 on the SAT. It is parents sitting over their kids on a daily basis making sure homework and studying is done.

I am GenX.  If you really think I care about what you have to say, I don't.

Then why non article comment in a thread about the article?

And, your last statement is not entirely true. Sure it is advantageous to have a stable parent(S), but this is not the only reason kids do not "make it". There are many, many more factors and the article does a fantastic job looking at one of those.

I guess I assumed it was only admissions committees that were using racial discrimination (see Harvard) in its practices; I am pretty surprised that coaches are now getting involved in the process

The article had nothing to do with racial discrimination...

It absolutely is relevant to junior/college golf

The article (did you even read it?) talks about coaches of minor, non headcount sports (which would include golf) at a top academic school who specifically seek out under-represented minority recruits for whom they will give sponsorship in the admissions process (since there are no D3 scholarships).

This school gives generous financial aid so families who can’t afford the sticker price will be taken care of. The example in the article said the first year student would receive $63k in grants!

But consider what the implications are: **equally qualified, or perhaps even superior, recruits who are not a member of an under-represented minority group will be overlooked and passed up due to this preference based on race. Specifically, white and Asian athletes would be under emphasized in the recruiting process, since they are considered over-represented groups at colleges.**

Any recruiting preference based on race instead of athletic performance (and grades) is racial discrimination.
