Ariya's transformation

impressive. Wonder how it affects her swing. Doesn't seem to be lighting it up..yet..but she will soon enough.

Likely a work in progress. Losing weight can mess with swing mechanics. I'm sure she and her coaches will deal with it. Seems her putter has been letting her down this year.

Hopefully she keeps her length with her weight redistrabution. I hesistate to call it weight "loss" as she may be trading fat for muscle and just getting into better shape. Kudos to her and she can be a role model for her hard work and improving fitness. I truly enjoy watching her play with her unassuming style. Power and grace!

I play with a guy that started a Keto diet and has dropped 20 lbs. He self admits that he has lost distance. But then again he is a weekend player.

Kudos to her for getting healthy and losing the weight if thats what she wants to do. I'll be interested to see her transformation in the spring when the LPGA season gets going.

Anorexia, she has an eating disorder I read somewhere awhile back.

Ariya's a big girl & can carry a lot of weight, but her weight loss hasn't helped her game at all, so far.

You are correct she has struggled with it for several years, very unfortunate.

She looks sickly. No one gets “fit” and looks like that. Her cheeks and eyes are sunken in. I worry about her. Her relationship with her caddie/ boyfriend has always been dysfunctional even to the casual observer. He always seems to have a grip ok her and ceding that much control to one person is harmful. She is one of the nicest players I’ve interacted with but I truly do worry about her and hope she gets the help she needs. I worry her decent results on the LET after not playing most of the year will encourage destructive behavior. I am not judging her looks or rating her level of attraction but she worries me.

Wow! She had obviously lost weight at the end of last season, but here she looks smaller overall-shoulders, height. She looks terrific and hopefully it will have her healthy going forward. (And hopefully she can get her golf game adjusted to her different body).

She does look much healthier, and I mean that from a standpoint of health only, not any superficial aspect. Last year by her standards was not good, but does anyone know if she started losing the weight and THEN started playing less stellar, or was it coincidence? Or the weight loss didn't matter? Only asking because it's such a weird situation in a sport where weight loss can effect your game so much (possibly) for seemingly worse results. It makes sense, though, the body mechanics and feel probably changes a lot. But then again, my wife is now 8 months pregnant and we hit some balls a few weeks ago and she was as on as ever so I guess you never know.

Just interesting to me, as I'm all for people being happy and healthy, and I agree with her in that playing happy doesn't necessarily mean you have to win all the time. I don't think many people who follow the LPGA would say she's no longer "good" if she's not winning every week. I'm hoping it's just a temporary slump for her either way.

I suspect that both overlapped --- her gym and fitness training with her golf. She was/is making great strides in her fitness program and sometimes that can lead to a player paying a little less attention to the golf side.

Either way, I'm willing to take notes. I could stand to lose a few myself...

First time in a while I'd seen Ariya -- very impressive! Saw a pic of Charley Hull on twitter the other day, she's still working out hard too. These ladies are serious!

about 12 years ago I was diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes, I was 235 lbs and decided my life and family was more important then the life style I had, however I worked diligently with my wife and I now weigh about 180 lbs but when I did this I completely lost my golf swing and almost quit the game. A freind introduced me to a local golf pro that worked with me to get my swing back. Took better part of 1 1/2 to get back to where I was before the weight loss so it can mess with your swing.

I don't doubt that it changes things but have always been surprised that pros can't figure it out with all of the practice they do. Same as learning to hit a draw or a cut.

But no doubt changing anything swing screws people up. Re losing weight Lydia Ko and In Gee Chun have never been the same either.

With respect to weight loss impacting the swing, the loss of mass reduces the frictional force between golfer and the ground. Generating swing speed depends upon strength, flexibility, and muscle twitch speed, but also depends upon how well connected to the ground you are. Swing forces ultimately get reacted out through the lower body to the feet and into the ground. When you lose a bunch of weight, unless you make compensations, your connection to the ground is reduced which lessens the swing forces which can be reacted out through the ground. So smooth swingers might not have as much issue maintaining a good swing while losing the weight, but I would expect lashes to really struggle. Anecdotally, LPGA players frequently experience 5 - 10 yard gains in driving distance when they become pregnant following the inevitable weight gain.

Weight loss (or gain) doesn't happen overnight. So unless you didn't touch a golf club for the entire time your body changes, I find it hard to believe that you suddenly lose your swing over the months or years it takes to gradually lose or gain significant weight. For a pro that practices and plays much more than the average amateur, it's even more hard to believe that the incremental changes in weight/mass would throw off a swing...
