Dana Quigley and His Game

Recommended Posts

I have been a huge fan of Dana Quigley, from his home made, sawed off swing to his miraculous run of consecutive starts. Even though he doesn't play the Champions Tour any more, I'd love to see him play as he says he still plays multiple rounds every day. How good do you WRXr's think he still is? How bad would he beat most everyone on these forums?

He's definitely 70 +...I was always a fan of him...I read where he still plays multiple rounds a day at home...I bet he can still carve up the course...He'd still blow us all away from the tips...!!!

The last time he made a top 10 in a professional event was 2009, while I have zero doubt that he can still play some solid golf, I don't think he's blowing a fair number of people on this board away from the tips of most clubs.

If he's in his 70's and still plays frequently and doesn't have major health problems, he's probably still in the 0 to +2 range if he's posting his scores all the time. A friend of mine who played the PGA Tour back in the day was still scratch at 72 years old and played scratch league here in SoCal. Think he played to a 0ish.

I use the term "tips" as a mere point of comparison.....former top Champions Tour player? Longest run of consecutive starts? 14 million or so in prize money? Yes he'd kick most anyone's butt in this forum.

Curious as to the point of this comment. Is the board full of people saying "Heck, I could beat Dana Quigley!!" LOL

Likely in response to my comment earlier about not going to be beating a fair number of people on this forum from the tips of most clubs. I'm pretty sure Dana, while likely still a very good player, knows he isn't going to compete as well from 7000+ as he would from 6400 these days. Retracting what "tips" was supposed to mean, doesn't change the fact that what I said before is true, a 72 year old Dana Quigley is likely not going to compete well against "mot anyone" from those longer distances that are now being changed.

And to answer your question Obee, no, nobody is randomly saying they can beat Dana Quigley.

Was he the guy that had like 6 hybrids in his bag, when they first became popular? IIRC he had a bad full of them and then just played traditional wedges and maybe some short irons.

How bad he would beat "us" depends on who "us" is. LOL

If he's still playing relatively regularly, at 72, Dan Quigley is likely between 0 and +2 if he were to post all his scores (as some pros do). Maybe a tad better. There are several people on this board who, if they are playing regularly, can give him a run for his money for a $100 nassau, I guarantee you that. :-)

Playing in front of large crowds in a PGA Tour Event -- that's never going to happen, so it's a moot point. Not that anyone's making that point. Still, though, someone always does, eventually.

I've played quite a bit of golf with Champions Tour players, mostly Tom Pernice, Jr. and Paul Goydos. Both those guys are grinders. They play with "The boys" all the time and they both get beaten no small amount of times in any group of 6 to 8 plus-handicap amateurs, playing their home course and definitely NOT just "going through the motions." Both of them are consummate pros who grind over 4-footers for a $20 Nassau.

Goydos turns in all of his scores. He's still one of the very best seniors in the world. He's a +4.3. Quiqley, at 72, is definitely not in Paul's range anymore.

Bottom line: Anyone on this forum who plays competitive golf and has posted many tournament rounds under the course rating can give 72 year old Dan Quigley a good match. And the better players here could give Goydos a match.

Money quote:

“The most amazing thing about hybrid clubs is that every single golfer doesn't carry at least one. I have a hybrid 3- and 4-iron like almost everybody else, but my 5- and 6-irons also are hybrids, and today I'm trying out a 7-hybrid. Every shot is like hitting the ball off a tee. The ball goes higher and stops just as quickly. You're asking all the questions; now let me ask you one: If I've made $13 million, and I'm hitting hybrids, why are you still using irons?”

When we had the golf shop we had bought a set of cavity back Top Flite irons that belonged to Dana. Got them off one of the independent tour van guys. These clubs had Aldila Tour only stiff graphite shafts. Also had real leather oversize Lamkin wrap grips. This had to be around 05 or so. Back then I could still swing and hit a ball. I tried to hit those stiff heavy things. Man they were stiffer than any X-100 steel shaft I have seen and heavy. Someone around here knew him and aid he had big hands and strong wrists and forearms. I can believe it. In fact that local guy that knew him bought those irons for display

And to think the quote from that article was from 2006.
