I'm on my way to Phoenix to enjoy my first winter as a snowbird. I'm taking a fairly slow route, driving less than 5 hours a day, and playing a round or two each day along the way. Since the trip crosses several geographic regions, I figured I'd post reviews and pics in the main travel forum. My plans are somewhat fluid, but I'm planning to hit St Louis, Branson, Hot Springs, Oklahoma, Amarillo, and Albequrque. I started out early this morning with a drive down to Missouri, and an afternoon round at Missouri Bluffs.

 

The topology of the course is fantastic. I think I can count the number of flat lies I had on one hand. The vast majority of tee boxes are elevated. The par 5s are fun. The par 4s are a good mix of long and short holes. The five par 3s are all picturesque, but unfortunately they pretty much play the same. Consider creating a custom combo by moving back on one or two, and forward on one or two. The course could use a few more fairway bunkers. The course is adjacent to the Missouri River, but unfortunately one doesn't get a view. There are no homes visible from the course. In fact one rarely sees another hole. Makes for a nice out of the way feeling.

 

Conditions were poor, unfortunately. The greens were punched a few weeks back, and are still bumpy and oh so slow. Pity. The zoysia fairways are dormant, but very playable.

 

Nice start to the trip. Ballstriking was very good with 9 fairways and 12 greens. I had a few looks at birdie, but the putts simply wouldn't track straight. Three bogies and one double.

 

One of my playing partners was a member, and he thought I would be disappointed given the conditions. However, the layout is so good one must overlook the late fall conditions. I'd love to tee it up here in the mid summer. Highly recommended.

Yes, I was the only one on the course, minus the brave maintenance workers. There was a group scheduled to tee off at noon, but they wisely canceled when the rain turned to sleet.

If you're going through Amarillo, Tyler's BBQ is good, not far off I40, but they sometimes sell out. Lots of chains, if so. Try to arrange your timing to spend the night in Amarillo, as the next city of any size is Tucumcari, which does not have as many options for staying or eating. West I40 is better than I40 East in both regards. Probably no golf, it's supposed to get cold.

I probably won't be in Amarillo until Thursday or Friday. It should be in the low 60's by then. Fingers crossed. Thanks for the BBQ tip. Love me some good brisket.

Started the day driving to Branson from St Louis. I teed off at Buffalo Ridge Springs GC at noon on the back nine, and pretty much had the course to myself until the 7th hole were I joined another single for the final three holes. I can see why the course is rated #1 in the state. What a wonderful layout. As the name suggests, the course is split by a ridge with the clubhouse at the highest point. Plenty of great views from elevated tees. The views include the surrounding area, and not just the hole in front of you. I'll let the photos explain. Good mix of holes with generous fairways. I felt I could really let loose with the driver without fear of getting into too much trouble. There are fairway bunkers. But I managed to miss them all. The greens were moderate size with few crazy undulations.

 

Course was cart path only after 4 inches of rain on Thursday. It was wet in spots, but very playable. The greens were rolling nicely with moderate speed.

 

Great round ballstriking with 12/13 fairways and 13 greens. Something definitely suited my eye as I was swinging away with the driver. Two birdies and five bogies.

 

I can't say enough good things about the course. Great layout. Excellent views. No adjacent homes. Highly recommended. Get your butt to Branson.

I finished the day with a quick round on the 13 hole par 3 Mountain Top course at Big Cedar Lodge. This Gary Player designed course has some really fun holes, and some great views from (literally) the mountain top. The greens were fast, and most had multiple tiers. Very challenging, and in great condition. For the $25 replay rate is was worth every penny.

Things are looking pretty bleak for tomorrow and Tuesday. Rain and plunging temps don't bode well. I'll probably skip Hot Springs, as the high on Tuesday is only going to reach 40. I may head south towards Fort Smith and try to get on a local course before heading to Stillwater on Wednesday.

There are days where there's a fine line between a hobby, an addiction, and insanity. Today is not one of those days. Rather than sit in a hotel room watching daytime TV, I ventured out to Ozarks National. 40 degrees? Check. 25 mph winds with gusts up to 35 mph? Check. Off and on rain? Check. Lol. When I finished the round there was a layer of ice on my cart's windshield. Who needs to travel to Scotland to enjoy Scottish weather?

 

ON is a Coore and Crenshaw design sitting on a ridge for the most part. It's a beautiful course with their signature wide fairways. Somehow I managed to miss two. The greens are very large, so a GIR is no guarantee of an easy two putt. There were a couple of bland holes, but overall it's eye candy.

 

Cart path only again today after some rain last night. Conditions were more than decent. The greens looked and rolled great.

 

Tough round given the conditions. The wind was generally two clubs, but it was three and four at times. I only managed eight greens, but I'm still happy to have gotten out. Days like today are remembered for the experience, and not the score. Hopefully I'll be able to feel my fingers in an hour or so.

 

Despite the conditions I have to give another hearty recommendation to the course. With the addition of Payne Valley this resort is going to be a real must play.

 

I'm sitting in the Mountain Top lounge listening to the wind whipping by outside. The rain is starting to turn to snow. Gotta make plans for tomorrow further south.

Wow, what a course. Erik Anders Lang just did a vlog (look on YouTube) here with Wes Short Jr. (he interviewed Coore & Crenshaw too). Looks incredible and I'm getting cold just looking at the pictures. Always love hearing about your trips - great descriptions with great photos. Did you have the course to yourself??

Yes, I was the only one on the course, minus the brave maintenance workers. There was a group scheduled to tee off at noon, but they wisely canceled when the rain turned to sleet.

I considered it, but it does add almost two hours of travel from Oklahoma City. I'd be cutting it close with daylight. It might be tough to pass up though.

I had a nice morning drive through Mark Twain National Forest on my way from Branson to Fort Smith, AR. Nothing quite like a twisty road over hills and through valleys without an other soul in sight. I made a stop at the Walmart Museum near Rogers, the original site of Walton's five and dime. Lol. Definitely the highlight of the trip. I attempted to stop at Pinnacle Country Club, the home of the LPGA's NW Arkansas tournament, but it's a gated community, and the security guard was having none of my Big-fan-of-the-LPGA story. I'm sure I'm in his little black book.

 

I swung by Razorback Stadium at the University of Arkansas because, well, there's not much else to do here when the temp is 20 degrees.

 

Looks like golf is a no-go today. The temperature has climbed to 33 degrees, and with light winds it's quite pleasant. However, there's no answer at Eagle Crest GC. I guess a few brewpubs await in Fort Smith. I'll head out tomorrow morning for Karsten Creek.
