Recent Stories of Those Who Went Back in Time

I’m curious.

Who all has recently gone back in time equipment-wise? I know there are lots of threads on this, but I’m looking for more recent input.

I threw my i5’s back in the bag at the end of the summer, and I am enjoying some of my best ball-striking rounds ever. It doesn’t make sense.

Anyone else? Have you switched back and why?

I put a ~2005-2006 original Cleveland Ti Launcher fairway back in bag for the umpteenth time. Smaller footprint by today’s standards. Only 15 deg club I’ve been able to hit reliably from turf. Currently playing a Mn-Bn Anser I bought in 1989. Like the lighter head weight. Just got some MP20 mid and short irons which are basically a redo of the TN-87s.

Changes driven by a mix of functionality (fw), variety (putter), and irrational ho’ing (irons).

Tried to practice with my Ping BeCU E2+ this summer after a 1+ year hiatus . Its a night and day different look just on offset to my P770s. I could still hit it, but what I used to think was soft feeling was just there and I really prefer the strike of the P770s over the Pings. I had the pings for a good 20 years prior playing less then I did in my junior days as an adult until the past 3 years.

The Anser 2 has not made it back in the bag.

Also brought back my 1988 era Staff Fluid Feel MB for some swings as the WRX blade threads had me thinking I was less of a golfer for not hitting a MB (no, not really).

Solid near center but not a butter blade. Punishing just a hair thin. Yeah, I'm fine with a nice forged CB :)

All of my clubs (in both bags) are from time that golf forgot. I think my newest club is from 2013 and my oldest is from 1982. Either way, I don't feel like I'm missing out and that's what matters to me...

All my gamers are old with my newest clubs made in the early 2010s. I feel that with a good swing fundamentals, one can play with any club out there. I think older clubs are better feeling, obviously a lot cheaper, and can still keep up with the present day clubs out there since golf tech has been stagnant for years.

I was playing G400 irons and picked in a nice set of Ping i10s with Ping AWT shafts and instantly started hitting the ball better with a solid contact, higher ball flight, more stopping power on greens. Was planning on getting the latest Ping i irons when the i210s are replaced. Last week picked up some mint i200s with AWT shafts, played twice with them and prefer the i10s even though they are not very forgiving. The i200s feel like a brick on a stick when swinging them.

I've gone backwards a bit with my driver, my results with my King LTD weren't quite what I was looking for, so I started experimenting with various sticks. I'd never jumped on the SLDR train the first time, so I picked one up a couple years ago. Have liked deep faced drivers, so I grabbed a SuperDeep a bit before the SLDR. Played around with these, and dug out my Fast 12LS for a few rounds, was hitting it quite well.

Went farther back when I dug out the persimmons. Had picked up a couple Ram drivers, a TW801 and TW802; the former is a deep faced clubhead, the latter is less deep faced and 9*. Had a fair bit of success with these. Always hit these things better, should just stick with them. And picked up Eye2 driver and 3w, which also saw some course time. Hit them well also, to the point a friend asked why they weren't in the bag when I'd swapped in something else.

Went forward with irons though, which was also backwards for me. Picked up a set of MP37s in late summer. I'd had a set about 13-14 years ago, traded them and regretted it. Found a set at one of the local 2nd Swing shops and jumped on them. Glad I did, they did well for me. That's the going back part. They're a forward move because they're about 35 years newer than what I had been playing, 1980 Golden Rams. LOL

Short story made long.

SLDR irons went back in the bag, kicked out the '17 P790 that put up a good fight but ultimately lost. I'm just more consistent and shoot better scores with the SLDR's.

It’s nice to know that I’m not the only crazy one on here!

I went back to the i5’s out of curiosity. I’m a severe ho when came to irons. Played all kinds, and most brands in the last few years. I don’t even want to think about how much I’ve spent either...

This will trigger some, but I actually like & use the extra spin on my iron play. For me, it is about distance control...something I struggled with on shovels and flex face irons (although the g25’s are real good). Wind is not a problem for me because I can hit knockdowns pretty well with them...something I struggled with on the newer stuff.

Just my 2 cents

Played a Rbz tour 3 hybrid for several years. Got caught up trying to find a hybrid that was more workable...I was going to hit shots with a hybrid...yeah

After several hybrids, shafts, etc I finally came to the realization that a hybrid is about hitting greens and fairways, not stuffing it from 225.

Began to loathe the day I got rid of the rbz...then I found one for $40 that had barely been hit. This was back in February. It'll never leave the bag again.

Just recently found a really nice 905R with Rombax Yellow shaft Regular flex $50.00, hit it just as well as any newer Driver out there. Also picked up set of Adams Redline irons for $60.00 feel Im going to shoot same scores as I would with something that I have spent much more on. Not that price determines scores.

Hi All

I have regularly gone back to my Old (2003) Macgregor VIP V-Foil 1025CMS with Rifle 5.0 Shafts - still superb - just getting a bot old and battered after 16 years!

Bit like the guy swinging the clubs :-)

Benched a G410 LST for my "old" 2016 M2 with Kuro Kage Dual Core TX gold letter version. It sounds and feels like a wood baseball bat when compared to the Ping and is longer and straighter when hit anywhere near the center. Only thing the Ping does better is maintain ball speed on extreme misses.

Funny you posted this thread. I was a long time Ping Eye2+ 2I user that beat out several driving irons over the years. I lucked up a several weeks ago to find a 3-PW set with the same KT-M shaft as the 2I. I’ve played 4 rounds with them since and my iron play has been fantastic. Took me a round and a few range sessions to learn the club distances (basically one more club than the Srixon 745s I had). Really impressed with them.

As you can see from my signature, my whole bag is “old” but I haven’t lost any scoring ability since switching to them.

If it weren’t for the groove rule, I would have played my s59 Tour’s until death took me.
