Did Cameron Custom Shop Botch this putter?

Long Shot

Recommended Posts

I sent my T22 Newport into the custom shop to get it stamped and customized to commemorate my daughter attending and playing lacrosse for West Point. I received it today and I was disappointed in what they did to the putter. The stamping doesn’t look like it was done correctly, and looks like it was carelessly done. The V and Y in navy have large circles in the finish that stand out so much that you almost can’t see the letters in regular light. On the front the stamp paint fill looks like and amateur did it and the paint is all over the place.

This is the fourth putter I have sent in and the work was always quality. What do you think? When I called they said mushrooming will happen, not sure of that is mushrooming or they did something to the finish. kf0y1a77ried.jpeg

Tried wiping it down and took new photos. No difference. Looks like the finish was scratched or removed can’t really figure it out, other than it looks like crap. Called and they were making excuses on the phone already. Sent email with pics, let’s see what they say.

par for the course for them, unfortunately. did you use 100% acetone to wipe the excess? it almost looks like a crappy paint job but i see what you mean by the finish being scratched off. hopefully they make it right for you.

This seems to be an ongoing problem for them and it's getting fairly depressing to say the least...... Had 2 putters sent to the custom shop to receive a little TLC only to have them returned saying that they wouldn't be able to perform the work. The first being a 1996 Santa Fe that I wanted refinished back to it's original glorious oil can finish and was told that they couldn't replicate that finish anymore. After some back and forth emails, I decided to send it to BOS and couldn't be happier. The second was a Circle T Newport 330g in a stunning "Tour Black Mist " finish owned by Jonathan Kaye that he gave to me. I was told on this one that aftermarket work had been done to the putter and that again they couldn't accommodate my refinish requirements. But with emails and correspondence by Jonathan himself the putter was done back to the black mist finish albeit not quite the same.... I am not at all bashing the custom shop at all, but IMHO they should be more accommodating....

They are taking it back, but short of refinishing it I am not sure how they are going to fix it. We will see what they do?

If that's not a paint smear (and if you wiped it with acetone I doubt that it is) I think the stamp bottomed out and the solid part of the stamp struck the putter and damaged the black finish. The only remedy is to refinish the putter in black or to remove the black entirely and you would be left with a satin finish like the putter below.

Thanks, I like to do putters that represent milestones. I have a slighter that my father had built for me for my first father's day (he passed before it arrived and incredibly the box was on my door when we came home from his funeral..crazy). My wife had both the kids pick out colors and had their names stamped on my favorite putter for my 40th birthday. I have traveled all over for years with my daughter for her athletic career (mostly Lax), she will be playing lax there. So I wanted to get something done to represent and commemorate this, and I really like the design. Nothing more awe inspiring in sport, than everything that surrounds and happens at an Army Navy game. Been going to them for years. Means even more to me now.

They refinished a Button Back in black for me last year (no stamping or anything, though)...I got an email saying that the finish didn't pass their quality control so they needed another week or so to redo it. So it seems they do have some kind of QC in place but maybe this one wasn't inspected as close as it should have been? Definitely sucks...sorry it's turned into such a pain. Hopefully they make it right especially with the emotional value of the putter.

That would be nice, but 100% chance of that not happening. I don't think these companies care much for individual consumers, unless it is a situation in which they could benefit from the outcome somehow. Otherwise its all numbers for them. I literally received this on Veterans Day, and called them on Veterans Day (which I pointed out in my conversation when they were making excuses as to why it looked like cr@p), and they could give two cr@ps that it was for a future military leader. I lost a lot of respect for Scotty Cameron as he doesn't instill the qualities in his employees as he professes to have in his social media persona.

I was opening the cover of The Golfers Journal the other day and Scotty is sitting there at a workbench table, like he is sketching out a design of the T22. My first thought was what a bunch of b.s. marketing non-sense, because any person that thinks he is still designing and sketching putters by hand or crafting putters himself is drinking the Titleist/Cameron kool-aid for too long. On top of the fact that the design isn't even new.

I love my T22, but if someone is loyal to the brand because of personal qualities that his marketing team has professed over social media of the type of person Scotty is, well that person is just made up to get consumers to connect with the brand. The dude probably wouldn't even know the person who answered the phone if he was told their name.

Did the OP ever use acetone to quick, wipe over a letter or two to see if it was residual paint?

Gold paint is notoriously difficult to remove as well, that should be factored into the equation too.

Looks like a combination of a poor paint job and stamping... the stamping on the face looks like some good acetone would clean it up. The stampings on the bumper look like the round base around the bottom of the letter hit the bumper.... if you aren't careful, the round edge of the stamp will press against the putter head and damaged the black finish. I would have thought the custom shop would have been using better stamps that are cut away so this doesn't happen.
