On holes where you might tee off with a wedge/iron/hybrid like a par 3, do you use a tee, or not?

I usually hit off the ground since I don't ever use these with low tees at the range. Just curious as to what others do and if there is a reason to switch it up.

For woods and my driving irons I tee up about a centimeter off the ground. For my irons about a half centimeter. For my wedges if it's a nice teebox I'll hit it off the ground, but if it's a little rough or uneven I'll tee it up about a half centimeter too. The reason I don't tee up wedges is because they're the only clubs I might hit high off the face. It's very rare for me that I hit an iron or wood high on the face.

It varies. Usually it's just a whack of the ground with the club to create a little bump to put the ball on for most clubs... If I use a tee, it is for a longer iron... 3 or 4 iron.

Is there any impact on spin rate and or launch angle off of a tee v the ground? Even a really low one.

You get 18 chances for a perfect lie in a round of golf. Use a tee.

... Nicklaus said the same as others here. Why would you not take advantage of a perfect lie? If you like hitting off the turf, just baaaarely tee it up for a similar but perfect lie.

There’s a reason you aren’t allowed to place the ball on a tee from the fairway or anywhere besides your first shot. If you can use a tee, use it!

Definitely using a tee even if it is just barely above the grass for iron shots.

Always a tee. But rarely feed up beyond the turf. I just give my self a perfect lie on the ground. As in the ball is likely to be on the tee and yet still touching grass slightly. Higher than that and you can’t control spin with a wedge , and it runs risk of hitting high on the face. Although I did tee a hybrid up 4 inches or so once to launch it over a stand of trees on a par 4 dogleg. Works great for hitting a 250 yard moonball. But I wouldn’t do it for control.

Yes, just like there is a difference in spin numbers off a mat and off of real turf.

In theory as long as you can still make clean contact, a ball on the real turf will have slightly more friction, therefor staying on the face of the club slightly longer and imparting more spin. So in theory as it relates to spin: grass>mat>tee. This is why you see Pros push the tee almost all the way into the ground on par 3's. They can manipulate it so that they get a "perfect" lie, but without losing spin from teeing it too high.

My instructor said use a tee so I use a tee. Every time that little voice in my head convinces me otherwise just proves he was right.

I dont tee up wedges, I tend to catch them slightly high on the face and I dislike what that does to the ball flight, distance, and spin numbers I get. Wedges I place the ball in as perfect as a lie as I can and then play them standard like I would from a fairway.

This is me also. Whack the ground a bit and create a sight rise in the ground. I do that with all irons and even my 5 wood.

Only a tee for the driver and 3 wood.

Grab a broken one from the tee box and tee it up a tiny fraction more than just off the straight turf - maybe 1/8" for me.

I never use my own tees for iron shots off the block.

I follow Jack's advice as well and use a tee every time. Like others have mentioned, I use broken ones picked up off the ground for anything besides driver.

Jack knows jack about teeing it up.

I use a tee unless I'm at a weird distance and want to take a little something off an iron. Then I'll try to give myself a good lie on the tee box. Usually only use this with shorter irons though.

I like to hit off the turf. It works for me!

I'm guilty of popping up a small mound of turf with an iron. I know better but always seem to put a different swing on it when it's teed up... even a little. It's mental.

99.9% of the time I use a tee. The exceptions are on a few holes I play that require slightly different flights. A particular short par three plays into the wind most times. I will forego the tee to get a lower, punchier, spinnier shot with a lofted iron. But that is ONLY if the tee box isn't all chopped up or uneven. On one other shorter par 4 that doglegs right and doesn't require driver, I will hit a 3 wd off the deck to get, again, a low cut shot that will roll out rather than carry.

I’m in the minority: with 9 thru Wedges I just find the best grass I can and go directly off turf. My swings are pretty steep so I find I’m more consistent without the tee on short irons. With 7&8 I’ll do a very short tee, almost like the ball is still on turf anyway. 4-6 irons it’s slightly higher, maybe 1/4” above turf.
