Srixon 765 vs Ping I25 and I200 irons

A detailed comparison between Ping i200’s, i25’s, and Srixon 765’s

As the name suggests I am going to be talking about the differences that I have observed between these irons but I first want to give some background information that is relevant.

1) Single digit handicap, pretty good ballstriker at times

2) Was recently re- fitted for irons and am now red dot standard length.

3) Where I play is often somewhat damp with grainy grasses such as Bermuda

4) I’ve had all sorts of golf clubs in my long career- currently age 47 and been playing for 41 years.

5) I have been taking lessons from Dan Carraher and it’s really starting to click, so that’s something to consider

I200’s red dot, standard lengths and loft. Nippon Modus Pro 105 Stiff shafts- just got these about two weeks ago

Ping i25’s Blue dot, CFS stiff +1/2”- bought these new from Ping in 2014

Srixon 765 irons, standard length loft lie – Nippon Modus Tour 120 Stiff shafts- Had for a year and half or so

I believe you make assessments about things with at least a sample size of three sessions and preferably in different times- like not back to back days for example.

My highlight takeaways-

These Ping i200 irons are all I could possibly wish for as a lifelong Ping owner- I’ve had Eye 2’s, Eye 3’s, S59’s, S55’s, I25’s, iE1’s and now the i200’s.

Because of the Srixon’s I figure out that I freaking love Nippon Modus shafts- to me, so far, the 120’s and 105’s play somewhat similarly, and I have not noticed a drastic weight difference.

Some of this may have to do with the difference in club heads.

The i25’s provide less feedback than the i200’s to me, and want to hit the ball high and straight- with a slight draw- Once I changed my set up with Dan’s direction, the blue dot lie became untenable and I was hitting everything very left. The red dot i200’s have definitely helped with that-

The i200’s are noticeably accurate both directionally and distance wise. I have been pin high more than I can remember- some of this is Dan’s help though.

The i200’s with the 105 shaft have a wonderful natural trajectory but I feel the i200’s are easier to work in every way than the i25’s- again some of that may be shaft related?

The i200’s strike the perfect balance of workability and forgiveness. I would say that the i25’s may be a touch more forgiving- maybe a tiny touch, but with the i200 you get so much more club and feel=-

The durability concerns I had are now gone- the ie1’s rusted and got beaten easily for me- the i25’s are tanks- Somehow Ping managed to get a soft, crisp feel with much of that same durability. I bought these i200’s used but in very good shape and I imagine that the wearing off of the hydropearl finish had already taken place.

I am selling my i25’s and the jury is out on the Srixon’s. I would say the i200’s are more forgiving than the 765’s in terms of straightening out mishits a bit. I have noticed that certain types of mishits with the 765’s get punished more than the Ping’s- but the 765’s are functionally forgving through the turf in a surprising way.

The comment that the I 200’s non power spec are “short” makes sense coming from the 765’s that are around two degrees less loft per club - but I think a other things equal these clubs hit the ball plenty long.

All good sets of irons but I am in love with the i200’s

Tried i200's, all Mizuno 900's, latest Srixon Z's. Bought a Srixon combo, Z-585 4-6 iron and Z-785 7-P with Miyazaki graphite shafts. Srixon provided great distance and better feed back.

I'm a older golfer who breaks 90 in maybe one of three rounds. Depending on how my hip feels, I will carry my driver between 210 and 230 yards. / 7i = 140 yards. Generally, rough fittings recommend me for GI clubbheads with circa 100-gram R-flex shafts.

I have hit the Z765 on occasion, along with the Z565. I really liked the Z765 when I caught a decent shot, but the Z565 flew better, regardless of shaft.

The Ping i25 triggers fond memories. I visited the local Golf Galaxy in late January a few years ago on a snowy day. In the walks the Ping rep, with early release test sets of 4, 6, 8 and AW in both the new i25 and G25. What's more, these were intact clubs with both CFS R and S flex shafts... a set-up for a 2 x 2 test matrix. (I still have my notes on it).

It turned out I was able to get decent launch with the i25 in R-flex, and the G25 in both R and S. The separator: I got about 5+ yards with G25 in S, and +15 yards in R-flex. Unfortunately, money was tight, and I didn't make a buy.

The i200 was a similar thing. With the AWT R-flex, I was able to get quite good launch, although Hot List ranked it as a Players model. One question was whether I could hit the 4i off the turf - I got surprisingly good action through the ball, possibly because of lighter AWT long iron shafts. Maybe with a softstep?

After talking with my pro, I made a play for i200 heads off of GolfWRX classified last fall. The seller, however, wanted $400 for 4-PW heads and negotiations failed.

I have been really impressed with my srixon 765 irons since i bought them this spring. They have great balance and go through the turf really well. I am a picker and thought I may have trouble in this department. It has not been an issue at all this season. My ball striking went to crap down the stretch this fall, but i found the 765 4 iron (my longest iron) to be plenty forgiving.

Interesting. I have been doing similar comparisons. Count me firmly in the Modus camp, too.

I have been playing G400s with a Modus 105S for a couple years. After working hard on my swing to get from an 11 index down to 6.5, I am looking to move to a smaller head and have fewer rocket balls that fly greens.

To that end, I picked up a brand new i200 7 Iron (blue dot, AMT 2.0) on eBay for $50 and have been hitting it on TrackMan, the range, and one practice round. I'm not in love with the AMT shaft and the lie but I really like the i200 overall. I hit some of my best iron shots of the year on the course with the i200...the distance was really consistent for me. I got a couple of hooks, but I assume the blue dot contributed to that a bit.

The place where I practice has a few demo 7 Irons laying around that I have tried...the Srixon Z785, Callaway Apex Forged, and TaylorMade P790 Ti to be specific. I really like the feel of the 785, but I think that was mostly due to the Modus 120S in it. I love that shaft.

The Apex Forged and P790 Ti were rocket launchers. The Ti was ridiculously long. Since I am not looking for a power game from my irons, I wouldn't consider those. I think I would be happy with either i200 or Z785.

I was recently fit and the i210 beat out Mizuno HMB and JPX Forged. My current plan is to get the i220 (or whatever they will be called) when they are hopefully announced in Jan/Feb (with a Modus 120).

I feel the 765 and the i200 are both great irons. The i200 will perform at preserving speed across the face, the 765 is a bit more of a player’s iron of these two. I’d say it is a touch smaller and slightly more workable.
