Unable to edit quoted text

Maybe it is just me, but the new editor will not allow me to edit quoted text. Is anyone else having the same issue? If so, is this a known issue and is a fix in the works?

I can see you can delete quotes. Editing quotes maybe a preventative action.

Q1. Quoted post with attached gif and it did not, that I can see, transfer to new text box, how do you do?

Q2. Do not see post preview, edit, etc., in Firefox, as seen in last tutorial illustration, how do you do?

What do you mean by a preventative action? Also, the tutorial states that quoted text can be edited (italicizing, bolding, etc.).

I'm using Chrome with W7 and do not have the Post Preview button as well. Huge software/upgrade error if that is not available. That's all I'll say about it.

We are checking to see how the last security patch effected the editor as it involved quotes.

I too miss the ability to edit quoted posts. Not to change the meaning of posts, but to parse out extraneous information that isn't relative to what I wish to respond to. This is extremely helpful when there are multiple replies within a post or I am using multiple quotes and want to streamline the thoughts so that my reply makes more sense. If someone wants to view an entire post that I am quoting, they can go to that post (which I have oftendone in the past). It also prevents a multiple quoted post becoming abnormally large and less likely to be read.

Yep, sometimes I want to reply to only one sentence out of a very long post. Now it will require manually quoting...copy and paste.

Now there is a link to the quoted post if it quoted other posts? So follow the bouncing ball to read the reply chain? Expanding the quotes was better.

I believe the theory involved in the Vanilla "rich editor" is that the user is supposed to highlight the portion of the earlier post they want to reference and only quote that. There is a way to do that but I forget how. It treats quote blocks like an image, making them non-editable.

Initial feedback Attached content; rich embeds, links, images, do not embed in the rich quote. As for being able to edit quoted text is by design. To quote a comment you'll the have the entirety of it in your post. We can definitely touch base on rich editor and talk about quoting abilities.

Its a terrible design if you cannot edit the quote. If there is a 5 paragraph post and I only want to reply to one sentence - you need to be able to edit that. And lets be clear, on WRX its not like 5 paragraph quotes are outside the norm. So now, if there's something I want to address in the 4th paragraph, all I get to do is quote the entire 5 paragraphs and have it appear in the shrunken little box where no one has any idea what you are referring to.

Awful change, it was 10x easier to deal with the way it was before.

Yes to all of the above regarding editing in order to bold a certain part of the quoted text that you want to emphasis. Also, I was not able to expand the box containing the quote while typing my reply. I didn't have the ability to read that quoted text while replying to ensure what I was typing addressed it thoroughly.

Also, when I click on the quote button it drops me down maybe ten to twelve posts in the thread. Not all the way to the "leave a comment" box but just down farther in the thread. Pain in the rump because you then need to go back up to resume reading from where you left from.

Hearing that each quote is now treated as an image, maybe that would explain the extreme lagging in text input now (like all of the processing power is being drained).

Man, the lag is AWFUL.

Which OS and browser? Does the lag occur in chrome?

We are looking at options to switch back quote functionality as previous editor.

I also just noticed you can only edit a post once. I edited one then decided I would like to just delete it all together but could not.

There is no time limit to editing. Might be a back to back flood control.

Thanks for all the updates, @Gxgolfer. Hopefully, this will get sorted out soon, because the inability to edit quotes is an unfortunate development.

Vanilla should be taken out behind the barn and killed with a single shot to the head.

^^^^^ times 5000. By the time all of the ongoing issues with the Vanilla software somewhat get "fixed" it will be time to migrate to another platform.

I have lots of lag using iPad and chrome. Can’t figure out how to delete inserted links. Don’t see preview buttons etc. only see post comment

inserted links don’t always show in full but in a very skinny box. Also when I paste the link to insert it doesn’t fully appear in the box - offset below and to the left so I only see part of the top of the letters in the link.

i put a pic in my signature and it appeared very large couldn’t delete but I did check the box to hide and that worked.

sometimes when I go to delete text it continues to delete text way behind what I thought I had attempted. - I hit x a couple of time and it deletes two, three, lines of text. Aaagh when added to the lag.

Some forums have trolling troubles when they allow for alterations of quoted text. This would prevent me from quoting you and altering it to say "Hey, maybe Ohio State and Michigan State aren't all that bad."

How on Earth does one delete a quote block? I was going to post a reply to a post, but changed my mind. The unposted message was auto saved, and now I can't post a new message to the thread, as the d-mn quote is showing up in the editor! If I tap on it the border changes to blue, but there are no buttons to delete it. Grrrr.

I haven’t figured out how to edit or delete a quote, but go here: Sign Inand you should see a “draft” - click the X next to it to delete the entire draft message. Then you can start over.

and I don’t know what that giant image above is. I was just trying to insert a simple text link... it says “sign in” but should take you to your draft posts page.

Thanks. That did the trick. That said, no idea why we can't edit quotes. As others have mentioned, there are numerous reasons that we'd like to modify a quote. Anyone caught fabricating quotes can be dealt with by the mods.

Agree with others about editing a quoted post but the editor itself. Highlighting and popping up the different emphasis works very well. However, while It allows BOLD, ITALIC, and STRIKETHROUGH it (STILL) doesn't include (IMO) the first or second MOST USED "emphasis", the UNDERSCORE.

UNDERSCORE is either first or second to BOLD to emphasize something, Italics is a distant 3rd and strikethrough is used FAR LESS than italics.

At least with the previous editor the old HTML(?) of and surrounding text WORKED. Now it doesn't.

And BTW, frankly the new editor s/b embarrassing - I can't recall any forum I'm on now, or have been on previously, that hasn't had underlining, font sizes, or colors.

A BASIC modern header with minimal editor options.

Frankly, making this large a change, it's hard to believe there weren't a couple of dozen volunteers to "beta" test the new editor. Or was there ?

No need to go to "Drafts".

Use your "delete" key.

Place your cursor immediately BEFORE the quoted box and hit "delete" IF you're on an Android device.

If you're on an APPLE/ MAC device place the cursor immediately AFTER the quoted box and hit "delete".
