Last year, in an effort to improve the capability of our forums, we switched to new software. We expected tremendous scalability and rapid customization that would significantly improve each Member's experience across multiple devices and integrate flawlessly with social media platforms.

Unfortunately, after a significant capital expense, we have decided that the length of time and the additional cost to reach our goals make this enterprise untenable.

Thus, we have made the difficult decision to transition the forums to our original software platform. We’re excited that, in the nearly two years since we began the process of our most recent switch, our original platform has been upgraded significantly, and we are confident that the reversion will not only provide the stability that we desperately needed prior to our last move but will also return to the Membership the high level of customization that made our online community so great. We have also added technical resources to the GolfWRX staff that will allow us to build custom modules and modifications that we are confident will take the forums to the next level.

We remain the world's largest online golf community, and we still hold true to our core values and mission statement as written in 2005. Bearing both of those elements in mind, being the best and offering our Members a platform that is world-class are both requirements, not options, and it is that spirit that has motivated this decision.

So, please pardon our mess over the next five days or so while we transition the forums.

A few important notes: Current content will be accessible during that time, but the forums will be READ ONLY, and you will not be able to start new threads or reply to posts or PM's. We know this is inconvenient, and we apologize, and we greatly appreciate GolfWRXers bearing with us through the transition.

We are very excited about starting this next chapter for GolfWRX and getting back to the high-quality Member experience we all expect as soon as possible.

Anyone ever attempted to qualify/qualified for the Open - Either US or British

I realise that most people on the site are from the US.

Has anyone on here ever attempted to qualify/qualified for the US Open, or the British Open?

I played in 3 US Open qualifiers. Never made it out of local qualifying. My best round was a 72, when a 71 moved on to Sectional qualifying. My 3 rounds have been 76-72-78. The last time I tried was probably 1996.

I've never played in one, but have caddied in a number of local qualifiers. Crazy range of abilities in those things. I've been in groups where one guy shot in the 60's, my guy in the 70's, and the third in the 90's. As such, they can draw out to be long, boring rounds of golf - even for the folks playing.

I've tried for the U.S. Open multiple times but never got through. If you have anything less than your A+ game you don't have a shot. Great fun and great test for the nerves when USGA officials are everywhere and you have to sign a USGA scorecard.

Good to see some have tried.

I tried when I was younger for the British Open, I got to the final qualifying but then wasn't close at all - the situation 100% got the better of me

I tried the U.S. Open qualifier at Southern Hills in 1984. Did not make it after a 74 in both rounds. Was way off and that told me a one handicap was no where near good enough.

Did the local thing 3 times in the late 70s early 80s. Now to be completely honest it was on a great course that I knew well. Never made it past the regional. I remember one regional was at Congressional and the other one was at Atlanta Athletic Club. I can not remember the third one to save my life

Played the US Open local 4 times between 1995 and 2001. Never made it out, birdied the last 3 holes once to miss by 1, I was an alternate for sectionals that year.

Great story. It just tells you how good the pros are and how tough US Open and PGA Tour setups are. He shoots 65 at qualifier without trying, hungover, etc then shoots 77-73 at US Open. The pros are soooo good.

I play US Open Local qualifying every year. Was in a 4-for-1 playoff to advance to sectionals two years ago, but didn't get through. Shot even par this year and missed by three.

Awesome to see that there are guys on here who have tried. I’d love to get low enough to try for The Open at some point before I am too old. It’s a huge motivator for me to get out there and practice.

I have given it a shot 2 time for the US Open, 3 times for the Four-Ball, 3 for the Am, and once for the Mid-Am. I have gotten within 2, but never closed it out strong enough to get all the way there. Will hope to be able to get back to a better routine now that my life has settled down again and see if I can't give it another legitimate go this coming season.

I tried several times for the U.S. Open, made it to Sectionals twice. Didn't bring my 'A' game to Sectionals.

Actually I've got a great story about my car breaking down on the trip to Sectionals, having to eventually hitch a ride with truckers to get there. Got about 3 hours sleep, no practice round (actually no practice at all the previous three days), found out I'm in the first group off the tee, then promptly shot like 80-76. Probably finished DFL.

Tried 3 times for U.S. Senior Open, came closer to the U.S. Open.

I tried three times for the Open around 2000-2002. Never made it through regionals. One time I was one over after 16 and someone told me even was playing off. Birdied 17 and then tried to make birdie on 18 and made double. Missed a playoff by 2. Other two times were not close. The thing I found interesting was at regionals, the ams were the best players. Then at final qualifying the pros were better. Then the tournament itself, well I think we all know how that goes.

Not played but caddied in regional and final qualifiers. My bag, a scratch amateur had a reality check when an unknown Argentinian kept hitting a 2 iron 40-50 yards past his driver. A lot of players from my area tried every year but the way the R&A moved the goalposts and ruined the local and final qualifying means they don't waste their cash anymore. Best anyone I know did was a local county player missing the cut by a single shot at Muirfield when Ernie won. I think the gap is now too wide between club pros and club amateurs when you take on elite amateurs who play full time and the world ranking bias.

Looking at the Canadian Open results for 1992

Total purse $1 million. Greg Norman won $180k !!!!!!!

Last two events on Euro tour saw the winners paid out $2.5mm and $3mm.

Times have changed. Not quite NBA money .. but that's quite a climb in 27 years !!!!!!!!!!

Last time I tried (US Open qualifying) I had two kids. Now I’m up to four. I think with each successive child, my hands have shook progressively more, to now when I hold a putter, it’s like there’s an earthquake. I think I’ve made more babies than 10+ footers in the last 9 years.

Oddly enough, every other part of my game is just as good or better. My 7 year old offered to putt for me last year though, so that should tell you something.

I came close to making it to sectionals the two times I tried. Maybe I would have had more luck if I didn’t spend my free time populating the planet (passive brag of the year?).

I was thinking of giving it a go again. I did a pretty big answer the other day, but then edited it as it wasn't that interesting!

Basically was considering concentrating 100% on golf for 7 months to see how I got on, including travelling for the best weather and some serious tuition.

May be off track but tried U.S. Amateur qualifying 3 times when I was younger, last time was in 1988. Never tried either of the Opens. Never was a threat to get out of local qualifying, but in 1988 I played with & kept the card for Danny Yates in Atlanta. He qualified, went on to finish runner up to Eric Meeks. I shot my normal 81-83 but it was impressive to witness a real player up close for 36 holes. I didn't have any illusions of being competitive but my handicap was just low enough to enter. It was a chance to play some courses I probably wouldn't get to otherwise, my goal was to break 80. Sadly, didn't achieve it. But I never got "the letter" either!

Played in numerous U.S. Open qualifiers from the age of 18-23. Always ended up in the low 70's, just couldn't quite get to the number needed to qualify.

Cashed a few checks on the mini tours in Florida so I know if I had a good day I was capable of qualifying but that just didn't happen unfortunately.

If I can get my game back to the level I am capable of I'll go out and enter some qualifiers. I took 15 years off from the game so I'm giving myself a couple years before I consider it.

One thing I notice now being older Is I over think way more than I did when I was in my late teens and early 20's. Back then I was paired with guys who have had status on the Buy.com and PGA tours and I never once thought I couldn't beat them. Played with Craig Perks, Steve Hart, Kevin Streelman, Roy Biancalana and the list can go on. Always held my head up high and felt that every shot with every club I could execute under pressure with them in my group. After being away from the game for so long I struggled with that this year. That mindset is going to be the defining factor if I ever decide to chase the dream one more time. Maybe I'll be one of those guys that plays their best golf once they hit 50.
