BST slowdown

clinkinfo

Recommended Posts

So I know this is discussed in prior years: this time of year the BST slows down. However, this really started a few months ago. I notice we have a lot of people now asking close to retail ( bay pricing at least) for some stuff, I also notice there’s much more clothing and clear “outlet” dumps going on (buying new stuff in an outlet and reselling for a profit).

anyone else notice a change? I’ve been around a really long time here, and the BST was always a “price it right and it will be gone in 1 day” place. Now, not so much.

I don’t think it impacts selling. Who cares what others sell or at what price they ask. As you said in your original post, “price it right and it will be gone in 1 day”. That still holds true. How do flippers affect another item that truly is priced right? That item will still move.

If I put up one of my Cameron 009 putters for $1,000, I guarantee you it will move in less than an hour. A lot of buyers would say it’s priced right, and it’ll move regardless of ALL other ads.

I don’t agree, I think it is impacting selling. I think with the influx of clothing and outlet stuff, along with the retail dumps, there’s a lot of ads on the board with lots of items per ad. Many of which are honestly not interesting to many people. It’s very easy for all those ads to push other stuff to page 2...3...4 and oblivion. On top of that, when there are far fewer interesting ads, people don’t come and scrub them like they used to, looking for equipment deals... so it’s even easier for those good ads to get lost. Something has changed here. it doesn’t always matter if you price it right, or honestly stupid low. Lately there’s not much interest from anyone here. Most of my extra stuff ends up on eBay and sells for lots more than I asked here! In the past, it was the other way around.

I think if I’m being honest, I see the same thing in my own behavior here. I used to scrub the BST board all the time, it was just fun to see all the stuff up and the custom builds, club building equipment, etc. I used to end up buying stuff just to try and then selling it on. But now, there’s just too much crap in there. I don’t Look myself the way I used to.

I think this qualifies as an unnecessarily rude response. OP only wanted to start a (valid) convo about changes he's perceived in the BST.

In my view, I think the BST stopped being what it "was" when the site framework switched. And I don't mean because of issues with feedback ratings, pricing, trust, etc. It seems that post counts are way down, which makes it easier to spot the used clothing dumps and horrible pricing. Those things obviously were there before, it's just easier to spot now with fewer posts.

I imagine that you're seeing a lot of "the season's over and I'm moving on from this because [i never used it/won't use it/want to buy something else]". That describes the two listings that I've posted, at the very least.

I think BST has slowed down more than just a little bit. It has slowed to a crawl and the people posting seem to think its price high and hope someone makes an offer somewhere near that whereas it used to be I just enjoying buying and selling and trying new things so I want this sold. I mean I price my items really aggressively because if you go to page 2 now it is not getting sold. The new format sucks plain and simple for BST but that just has no priority for the mods of the site. They do not care at all about BST or else we would have feedback already. They just want ad revenues now and that was the entire reason behind that site change. I mean how annoying is it that now we can have a thread just talking about clubs and have to scroll through adds that are every other post. Just ridiculous in my opinion but its not my website.

It happened when feedback went away. All you have left are unknown members and it’s hard to trust those. Not at all saying people are bad. Just that when we had feedback to look at , it helped and would weed out the undesirable quick. I had 80 (iirc) plus positives. And on here that takes a long time to build up. I hope they give us the feedback , back soon. The bst has become a ghost town for quality since then.

I explained a theory above to another poster. It changes buyers behavior when there’s less interesting stuff posted.

thanks to those that have started to post, I thought I was loosing my mind for a moment. It’s definitely been disappointing lately, I used to love this place for buying/selling because it was such an easy way to try new stuff and move on what didn’t work well. Now, I’m back over on eBay dealing with the non paying bidders and nonsense just because by page 2 here you are dead....no one is going to contact you, much less offer to buy it.

one of the more recent ones that shocked me was a set of j15 irons with recoil shafts. I priced them at like $125 obo for the set and probably would have taken $100.....Not super sought after, but a bit of a cult iron. Plus I figured the shaft would entice someone and I was giving them away I thought price-wise since they were just taking up space. Nothing. Not a single message. The ad closed on its own after a week or 2 when it went to page 1000 or something. I ended up getting $200 trading them in. I just don’t think That would have happened before.

I’ve only been a part of this forum for 2 years but the difference between the BST(and the rest of the site) are night and day compared from when I first joined until now. Let’s just say I don’t frequent the site nearly as much since the new updates have taken place. I really enjoyed the old platform and everything else it brought with it. Seems to me like this update has done nothing but create chaos and attract unwanted members.

Personally, the change in the climate of the BST can be traced to a specific moment in time for me - GolfWRX 2.0. My entire experience on this site has changed since the redesign, and I've noticed a definite change in just the whole vibe here. Members that were longtime regulars are rarely/never seen anymore, and they've been replaced by a lot of new posters who seem to spend a lot of time on the site. (I won't go in to my theory that GolfWRX probably considers the "refreshing" of the membership an accompanying perk to the redesign of the site - get rid of the old, stale, and curmudgeonly veteran posters and get some new, young, hip posters in here.)

I had over 100 rating before the redesign, and I've probably done 6-8 since (on maybe 20 items listed). I’ve noticed a definite decline in all aspects of my BST experience since the site redesign. The interest I've had in items is considerably less, and the interest I do get is generally a waste of my time with offers not even worth considering. I can't say I price items at garage sale level, but I always make sure my item is cheaper than anywhere else (eBay included), and that includes shipping in my price versus eBay where it's paid by the buyer. Any more, I just place items on BST just to go through the motions and see if anyone spots it in the first couple hours of listing (because, honestly, if I list an item on BST, it takes about 3 seconds to turn that listing into an eBay listing on the app). I used to wait a week or two before opening an eBay listing. Now I wait a day, tops.

I really don't attribute any of my recent experiences with the BST to prices being asked, especially in other's listings. I think there’s a litany of things affecting it - a few being no feedback, an influx of new members, and a lack of trust (or maybe just a lack of patience) in the current BST by many that used to frequent it. I’ve noticed that new, recent join, no post members are becoming the norm there now, and I hardly see folks active on there that used to be fixtures for years. The "newness" is not what sours me, it's the total lack of investment in the site, other than as another eBay for them. Without feedback, the only thing I have to go on is a little interaction with someone, and there is zero usually. And, don't get me wrong, I'm not looking to send love notes back and forth for a few nights before we seal the deal. Just answering a couple messages over the course of an evening is all I'm looking for out of a BST partner. They have no use for any "dancing" over an item, it's barely more personal than hitting "submit best offer" on eBay. Except they have little humor for having one of their fantastic offers countered, and have a lot of "internet tough guy" attitude, probably learned behavior from their past experience bullying people on Facebook groups into better deals than they were wanting to give. But I digress... Presently on the BST, there's no respect or sense of shared interest; just folks who want to get in, get deals for pennies on the dollar, and get out till they need it again. Rarely do offers and questions come from members with photos or enough posts to sell on the BST for free, and they expect the kinds of deals on gear that you'd only give to your small circle of close golfing buddies.

I definitely tend to agree with this. I’ve noticed in many of the threads I’ve tried to contribute to, it’s like there are so many angry rude members all of a sudden. Maybe if you want to be kind, opinionated? I don’t remember that either. I think the commercialization aspect really wasn’t the greatest thing for this site, and the update certainly seems like an attempt to commercialize the whole thing.

I think the biggest change I've seen is there seems to be less buyers. Even when something is priced right, a lot of buyers are going to make offers anyway. Factor in the shipping charges that are built into the price and it's almost easier to sell on eBay. I've had several listings lately where I've put up a listing and received a bunch of low ball offers or no offers at all and then listed on eBay and had a higher offer plus buyer paying the shipping within a day. With that in mind, I do think a lot of sellers are listing things for higher prices with the hopes of getting a reasonable offer and meeting somewhere in between.

BST is what made me join WRX, now that it's essentially dead I find it more and more difficult to continue wasting my time here instead of doing other things. I still hope feedback returns, but don't see that being plausible 9 months after the fact. Guess we'll see, the worst part is losing so many of the OG members that actually contributed, that's something we won't get back.

There's no question that selling on eBay is quicker and more lucrative. It's also just easier to deal with the shipping charges. Unfortunately with USPS the price for shipping across the country can be almost twice the price for shipping a few states over, and it's hard to set a decent price on something on the BST with that in mind. If you list something as $50 shipped, you might end up netting like $30 after Paypal and shipping, where the same club on eBay will likely sell for $50 PLUS the buyer paying shipping, so you net around $43-45 after all the fees. As a seller, I would like to be able to set my prices WITHOUT shipping, and just let the buyer figure out whether the sale makes sense for them, but... well, as a BUYER, I like just paying the nice round listed fee.

Personally, I like the idea of selling here to support and participate in a thriving community of like-minded folks. I'm okay with eating that $10 loss if it means that we continue to have that community.

I'm not a huge fan of the buyers that don't participate in the forums or BST whatsoever, and just use the BST as a cheaper-than-eBay marketplace, but you have to deal with that somewhat and plan accordingly. I'm much more likely to accept an offer from a participating member (even if not a regular poster or something) than I am a random no post member.

Definitely a slow down in the bst and the instruction forum from my perspective.

This time of year is always tricky for selling clubs imo. Just as example people want newish prices for this year’s drivers when most of the country’s golf season is over. So you got the sellers trying to recoup some of their cost before next years drivers come out and the you have the buyers known that and they won’t be able to play with the club for another few months. So basicallybuyers are only buying clubs that are exactly their specs and not willing to gamble on something that they know will drop greatly in value as soon as the next driver gets released in a couple of months.

Call me crazy but I think the BST slowdown goes so much farther back than just WRX2.0. I think it has nothing to do with feedback, as PayPal protection has your back. I first started noticing it a year or more ago when ebay started offering discounts all the time. All you had to do was find the stuff you wanted and wait, no need to peruse the classifieds here when you could wait on something new to drop at a discount, and still accumulate dollars via ebay bucks, ebates, rakuten, etc. That ruined classifieds buying for myself, and my assumption many others. I spent more time researching ebay stores than looking here, a pattern which still continues.

WRX2.0 hasn't helped any either. I've spoken with lots of formerly active WRX guys that say the new site, and more importantly the lack of app usage, has killed this site for them. When I'm not on a PC I agree entirely. The site is a mess on the phone IMO, and ebay is a breeze. Simple as that.

Not having a “preview” of the 4-5 most recently active listings on the side bar of every page hurts BST sellers greatly, IMO. I used to fall sucker to clicking on those way more often than I should have, and came across many things I didn’t even realize I was looking for (because I wasn’t). Now, there’s no opportunistic sales to someone who happens to see your item, is interested, and sees the price is right. It’s almost like you have to find the perfect someone looking specifically for your item, and hope they’re some kind of internet Mensa and can figure out how to use the search function here to find your item.

I think it lured a lot of folks into the BST that otherwise wouldn’t have been interested. And, it was a little bit of advertising/exposure for your item. I can’t imaging how many more eyeballs saw your listing because of it, but I’d guess it was significant.

TBH, I agree that I started to notice a decline in the BST before the site change. But the site change seems to have hastened the change on the BST for the worse. This new site feels like it’s primary purpose is to be an attractive platform for advertisers, and they’ll figure out how to make it work for the members as they go. Fundraisers were the priority to migrate, and the BST itself was definitely a casualty of a poorly executed format change. Miraculously, the revenue generating aspects of the BST seemingly made the transition flawlessly.

I’l call you crazy if you want, but I don’t think you are lol. I have a similar reaction now that you say it, because I just look at my own buying behaviors again. I’m over on eBay more often now because there’s just more deals over there. For me, I think it’s because it’s very hard to sift through the silly priced items over here, and much easier on the bay app to find specific things and then sort by pricing. On here I feel like so many people are asking such silly prices for things, and it’s just not worth the effort at times. And I know that means I miss out, because someone will have something good, priced right, but it gets lost in there.

Oh, and I do agree, the mobile version is terrible.

I definitely agree that it started slowing down before the site changes. I'm most disappointed that feedback ratings are gone as I had accrued over 100 positives with no negatives. I always price things less here than on Ebay keeping in mind that I am not paying their ridiculous final value fees; however, even when posting here, I still get the feeling like most are just wanting something for nothing these days. Moving stuff has just become more difficult overall no matter it's posted it seems.
