Putting a 3 wood shaft in a driver ?

Winter has set in and I was wondering this. With the way shafts are interchangeable now, just unscrew them and screw in another. Has anyone switched their 3 wood shaft into their driver ?

All that is, is basically now you have a lower swing weighted driver that's (probably) tipped a little too much. If you add some head weight to the driver, you're essentially doing what Rickie Fowler already does.

Someone already has such a solution: Hireko golf has been offering variations on its Thriver since 2011.

Thriver has a driver-size head with 3W loft and a shorter shaft. The head is 10 grams heavier than a normal Driver to maintain swingweight with the shorter shaft.

So it would be sort of like making a R flex into a stiff or something along those lines.

What about the opposite a driver shaft into the 3 wood ?

you can always extend the 3w shaft for the driver, unless you want a shorter stick

And you can always butt trim the driver shaft in the 3w

A shaft is not always exclusively for fairways or drivers

Many companies suggest a 1/2" tip trim for using their shafts in 3w and 5w's but you don't need to do that

The Driver and Fairway shafts are the same shaft, but the FW is cut shorter and tipped (also the FW may be a heavier version). If you want a shorter Driver then cut it down and add weight to the head to adjust Swingweight.

If you put a 3 wood shaft straight into a driver head, it might feel a little stiffer but it doesn't physically make the shaft stiffer. The swing weight will be lower since the shaft is shorter and a touch lighter, so we add weight to the head to bring the SW back up and to also account for that tipping.

Putting a driver shaft into a 3 wood, would be the opposite (increased swing weight, might feel softer).

Results: Swing speed was slightly less w/ 3w shaft, but dispersion was tighter. Overall distance was the same because smash factor higher w/ 3w shaft (hitting center of face more).

I've considered doing this as well, but haven't yet.

3 woods are built to 43-1/4” + now. Standard length on drivers used to be 43-1/2”. Using a shaft tipped for a 3 wood (1/2” - 1”) may slightly reduce spin and flight the ball a tad lower. Because of the length, should increase center contact improving smash factor as another poster mentioned.

As for using an untipped shaft on a 3 wood, I just built one to experiment with and am loving the results. Minor increase in trajectory while maintaining a strong penetrating flight. VERY easy to launch “well up” as Tom Wishon says.

If I am hearing him correctly, his 3 wood shaft is slightly heavier. How much of a difference would this make. Is there video or someone testing shafts of equal weight?

If the shaft is heavier, all other components being the same, this would possibly smooth tempo, increase swing weight and give the club less of a head heavy feel.

I've done it... With my M1 FW and my M6 Driver. At the range as a test. Standard stiff shaft for each. Straight swap, no weights added. What I will say, is that the M6 with the 3W shaft felt way better than the other way around. It was easier to hit, with a bit better dispersion and a bit shorter. The 3W with the driver shaft certainly went further... when I connected, but it was mostly mis-hits and just felt...weird. I couldn't find the sweet spot to compensate for the longer shaft. It was easier with the shorter shaft in the driver since it was like choking down or just hitting a 3W. I'm sure with the right tracking software and fitting expertise the long 3W could be made to work. But it wasn't worth the extra doddle as far as I was concerned.

I've done this, off and on. Most recent effort was using the Rogue Black shaft that came with my King LTD 3w in my King LTD driver. I prefer playing my driver no more than 43.5", so it's a reasonably good fit for me. I add lead tape as necessary for the feel I prefer, which sees the swingweight around D5 or D6.

Because of my preferences, shorter club length and heavier shafts, it's really little more than hitting my preferred target. Far too many driver shafts these days are far too light for this guy.
