Will changing from amt shafts to nippon tour 130 change swimg weight

Recommended Posts

I am gaming 716 ap2 with custom shafts. Tour issue amt x100, I want to swap the shafts out with nippon modus3 tour 130x. Will doing that change the swing weight because the AMT shafts get heavier as they get shorter or should everything stay the same or what would need to be done to achieve the desired swing weight im after ? Anyone have any info on changing shafts on the ap2s?

The swing weights in your current set decrease as you move from short irons to long irons. With constant weight shafts throughout, swing weight should remain the same from club to club. You won’t need to add weight to any irons, since the weight of the AMT short iron shafts will approximately match the Modus shafts (they’re both 130 grams). Your mid and long irons will have a heavier swing weight with the Modus shafts, needing a reduction in head weight to match your current set. The only way to do this would be to drill weight out of the bottom of each hosel, permanently changing the head weight of each club (I wouldn’t recommend).

In essence, these are two completely different shaft types resulting in differing swing weight profiles. If you like the current swing weight progression you’d need to stay with AMT shafts.

Well current set was custom fit custom built to be D2.5 4-8. And D3.5 9-pw they added a little tip weight to achieve the swing weight beacause the grips i play. I fugured the 6-pw with the modus 130 would stay the same but i was worried about the 4 and 5 iron. Do you think instead of switching shafts i should just go with a new set with the modus shafts in them? I am planning to upgrade to the new 620 CB irons later in the season of 2020. But tourney season starts here in feb. I got a great deal on the modus shafts they are pulls but look brand spanking new.

I’m sure the AP2’s are built with 7 gram increments between heads, as all major manufacturers do. This allows for increased shaft length with decreasing head weights to achieve a static swing weight. Unless Titleist all of a sudden changed their head weight progression in the AP2’s, the swing weight progression will remain static.

As pointed out previously, you are confusing terms. Static weight and swing weight are different, not necessarily tied to one another, and can go in completely opposite directions.

Due to tolerance, very rarely are heads evenly spaced in weight.

Also, 7 grams across the board will not do consistent SW across a set with most shafts.

AMTs are not meant to decrease SW, they are meant to reduce static weight.

Having built many sets of clubs (including MOI matched sets), @Golfrnut I agree the 7 gram increment between heads isn’t exact between all clubs due to manufacturing tolerances. This is why most companies that custom build sets sets use lead tip weights to adjust for varying swing weight due to head and shaft weight differences between assembled clubs. This is true for quality irons like the AP2’s.
With that said @scctx5r, I apologize about being incorrect about the AMT shafts as @Krt22 pointed out. They claim to be counterbalanced to maintain constant swing weight while decreasing in mass from shaft to shaft. In essence, installing the Modus shafts should allow for consistent swing weights to be achieved through your set like the AMT’s. You won’t know what swing weights you’ll achieve, however, until assembling the Modus shafts in your heads. Keep in mind that the shaft length, shaft weight, grip weight and lie angle In your build will influence the swing weight. If you like the way your irons feel now, try to keep most of these variables constant.
You should be able to use tips weights to make the swing weight adjustments in the shorter irons as built for you originally. @scctx5r, personally, I would want all of my iron shafts to match throughout the set. If you found a deal on 6-PW for the Modus shafts, you may want to look for the 4-iron and 5-iron shafts too.

Yup, gotta swap the shafts and measure swingweight to know for sure. Balance point on each shaft is going to be different.

Thanks for all the help guys. I think im just gonna hold off on the swapping shafts and just keep hunting the bay for some good heads for the modus 130 shafts i picked up. I am planning on getting new irons this coming season so might as well get the set up i want then. Thanks again guys you all have been very helpful

Why the change if I may ask? From DG to Nippon I mean. They are two completely different profiles.

If you take your current set to any golf shop that knows what they are doing, the person who installs the shafts will be sure to make any modifications to each club to increase/decrease the SW in each club to the desired amount. I switched from Project X 6.5 to AMT Tour White X100 a few months ago in my Taylormade P750 Tour Proto irons and it required me to make changes to reduce the SW in 6-PW while the 4 and 5 irons were correct at D4.5. The 8, 9, and PW were approximately D8-9 with the AMT shafts so I removed the port weights inside of the hotels to drop them to the proper weight which is a little more extensive than most people do. You can also add weight to the butt end of the shafts using Tour Lock Opti-vibe or Tour Lock Pro weights https://www.tourlockgolf.com/ They are very easy to install.

adding weight to the butt end is not really a good way to go about controlling SW. It changes the number on the scale, but the weight is still in the head, so the heft weight is still there, the MOI is still there, etc.

I agree. Butt side weighting has its place but not for adjusting swingweight.

why is “weekend golfer” the determining factor here? Are they less important than someone else? Do they have less requirements? If it’s worth doing it the wrong way for them, why do it at all?
