Driver fitting

Recommended Posts

My daughter currently has the Cobra junior driver with a ladies Atmos shaft in it. Her big struggle is distance because she is on the smaller side. I took her to get fit for a driver yesterday just to see if there was anything else out there that would be better for her. The fitter felt confident that we would find something that would give her a little extra yardage. After an hour of hitting all of the major OEM drivers and shaft combinations nothing was anything better than what she has currently. Her clubhead speed stayed between 68-70 consistently and the ball speed stayed between 98-102. What I did get out of it was lots of data and that was a good thing. The ball that she used for testing was a NXT and for the last 5 balls of the day he used a ProV1. For those last 5 balls the ball speed went up 2-3 mph and the spin went down. So now we know that she definitely needs to play a ProV1 or TP5 because the numbers show it’s better for her. So for all those articles about needing a low compression ball for lower clubhead speeds, it’s the opposite for us. Just thought it was interesting that I didn’t end up with a new driver but I did come away with some balls to test out.

Very interesting observations backed up by the data of a club fitting although I think that a lot of players would actually be able to get the results they are looking for by going through a ball fitting rather than a club fitting. You'd be surprised how different balls can affect shot results and it's way easier to go through a ball test than a club fitting.

There's definitely something more important that I should be doing.

Leezer the fitter thought he would find something for her but he didn’t. He told me to come back when she consistently had a clubhead speed of 75mph and we would have to at least look at different shafts. I was surprised by the ball data as well. She has played the TP5 before and I thought it was longer. It obviously gets more check around the greens. We had some leftover Titleist Tour Soft balls and we were trying to use those up. After yesterday’s data, we will stick with the TP5 and maybe try the ProV1 and AVX.

She is 58 inches tall with her golf shoes on so I made her current driver to the specs of the 60” on the Ping junior fitting chart. I think her driver is 41.5 right now. That gives her a little extra length to grow into. The fitter told me with her size and swing speed there were only a few options in each manufacture for her to try. They had some junior shafts from each of the companies. The only club that she had to really choke down on was the TM driver. I didn’t look at all the shafts to see what they were but he changed them out a bunch.

@Golfingdawg19 cool. Thanks For reply. Did she get fitted at Sea Island? I think you are close to there if I remember correctly. When I was down there for myself earlier this year I asked about Junior fittings - I was surprised that the guy basically said all they had was US Kids and the Ping Prodi G line....which wouldn’t really require a fitting. Like you, I am more interested in Driver, but have yet to find any fitter with appropriate size and worthwhile variety for shafts....The Trusty XR16/recoil stays until then I guess. Trial and error Is expensive ...

Most OEM have a junior pack of shafts I know for a fact Titleist does because my kid has hit them for both driver and fairways. I think its a matter of finding a fitting center that has shorter shafts. I know a local mom and pop shop here will do fittings with 7 wood shafts which isn't the same thing due to tipping but can give you a close idea. Even with the junior pack Titleist send still a bit long for my kid.
