Heavy driving iron shaft?

gevans24

Recommended Posts

Purchased a Mitsubishi Tensei CK Pro White 100HY TX and trimmed it 1/2" on both ends, plays 41. I installed it in my 3 iron.

Primary use is off the tee...it feels too light and not stiff enough. Was wondering if anyone would recommend me going with a heavier steel shaft such as a C-Taper, PX 6.5 or a UST Recoil Iron shaft?

Thanks!

I've used iron shafts in hybrids for years....Ctaper and S300

Works just fine!

My driver SS is maybe 112 or so right now so slower than yours. But swinging like that you've got plenty of speed to elevate a club even with a heavy steel shaft.

Though to be honest, a 100g graphite should still feel pretty stiff at those lengths if you can find a good one. I have a D+ 95 in a hybrid aswell and I like it

But steel is a great option in hybrids if you struggle with launch or weight/swingweight

I'm playing a Nippon 120 in my DI. Would never go to anything lighter.

Getting the ball up is definitely not an issue haha. If anything it's too high. I was told to go steel but I was set on the graphite and even tipping it and butt trimming it, it's still got some flex to it, almost too whippy.

I have a quick tempo and more than aggressive transition.

I don't think tipping it anymore would help because it would just make it lighter.

I'll either sell it or keep it and put it in my 3 wood.

My SS is in the 115 range, and I use the Recoil 125 Proto F5 tipped 1" vs normal trimming. Play standard prep C Taper 130x in irons, pretty high ball hitter. Club head is a Nike Vapor Pro 3i for reference.

I will say it is a little on the softer side, mostly in the mid section. I like it because I helps me add some feel and I am able to turn it over no problem. I have a medium-soft load at the top so its never been a problem of "too whippy". That being said, I can hit a spinny cut or hood it and hit a low knuckling draw off the tee. I really feel like it is an easy shaft to command the club with.

My SS is exactly the same as yours, and I've had luck with the OT Tour 110 in a driving iron (Gapr Lo). Can feel the heft, and doesn't feel loose at all. Also offer a 120. Not a fan of the Gapr feel, but that's for a different thread. Ha!

... I have heavier weight graphite in all my clubs. The main benefit is joint protection and that comes from hitting the ground. For some of us, graphite provides a slightly higher flight and maybe a slightly increased swing speed. All of that is irrelevant for the OP, so heavy weight steel is certainly a viable option.

I said the same thing about steel and graphite up till recently. After last years surgery I sought what I was thinking would be a short-term fix to allow me to keep playing golf though not as strong. Due diligence turned up Steelfiber and MMT so I bought one shaft of each to test in 6 irons. After playing 120gm PX 6.0 since 2006, to say I was surprised in the performance of both shafts doesn't quite cover it. I wasn't' sure whether my distance loss (10-12yds per club) was the result of surgery or age or both but they were bearing down, fast. I put a great deal of mental stock in getting back to the gym which is paying off but wasn't sure as to how it was going to affect my game.

Anyhow, when I came upon Aerotech and learned their Steelfiber iron shaft line is graphite wrapped in steel, I saw possibility. A lighter shaft with actual steel performance, really? Turns out a number of tour players from the mini tours as well as Regular and Champions tour have been playing Aerotech's Steelfiber i95 & i110 shafts for some time. That was positive but why? First, they don't have the steel bias so able to see performance value in a slightly lighter shaft that generates more SS/smash factor and ball speed, even some yards while not giving up the integrity of steel, low dispersion and distant control. Makes sense to me. What's the down side, they cost more than steel.

Why wouldn't I jump on them knowing I can still hit a straight 3i 190+ yards at my age and they are great looking. It's a sweet feeling. All I've given up is 10gms. Currently, I am testing Steelfiber i95cw in my 2iron and may test their 115gm shaft, and they have parallel tip versions for custom fitting.

Hzrdus Black 105 6.5x if you can find one. You will not overpower it in a DI. Rory and DJ used it for several years. Great shaft

Nippon Modus3 G.O.S.T hybrid shaft sounds like a good option. Shaft combines graphite and steel. TXG posted a nice review recently. TX flex weights 112.5 grams.

I guess, like anything golf shaft related, I'll have to go hit them. But testing iron shafts are easier said than done.

I am curious about the new MMT shafts from Mitsubishi, they come in 125g TX options.

$85-90 per shaft isn't phenomenal but it's cheaper than the hybrid I put in.

I'll wait and see what comes out on them.

I appreciate all your help guys.

Thanks! I know this thread is 4 years old, but I also play CT130s (Cobra MBs) and have a U500 3i head I'm looking to shaft. TX Monaco was too much, and CKP White 90 TX was too little. Have an uncut Recoil 125 Proto F5 to try, and curious about tipping. You said 1" over normal, does that mean 1" total, or more? TIA!

Lol - thread is 4 years old and I still use the same club.

To be honest, I am not really sure about the tipping, what actually happened when it was built. I order the shaft uncut and told them to tip it more than normal and make it a 1/2" longer. Essentially the thought being "I want to be able to get the ball in the air no problem with a slightly longer shaft, but don't want it to spin by tipping it".

Its an okay club for me still. I am closer to putting a steel shaft in it though now than in the past.
