14 year old wedges - sharpen grooves?

So, it’s come to my attention that my wedges are 14 years old, don’t know how it happened but time just seems to get away from you like that!

Anyway, they are Cleveland cg10 wedges & looking at my 56 wedge in particular the grooves are pretty much dead.

All that said I don’t have much issue with my wedges (+2/+3 capper with a decent short game), and in honesty I don’t really want to change wedges but I know I’m probably giving up some control with the grooves as they are.

My question is, is there really any difference between a new wedge and a 14 year old wedge with the grooves sharpened? I can see the obvious technology in drivers and irons with speed foam & lower cg etc but have wedges really changed?

I was in the same boat. I have a cg10 56 degree that I have had for 14 years. I went and tested 6 new wedges last Friday and put a order in for a new one. It was night and day the feel I had with the newer ones. Wedges are inexpensive so I personally don’t think it would be worth sharpening yours with the new wedge technology out.

Please, for the good of your game buy some new wedges. Wedge tech has moved on leaps and bounds.

Sharpening can sometimes make them non-conforming. So if you play those types of matches, I would definitely get new. And, as others have already mentioned, wedges are really inexpensive for the importance they can carry.

ok, I have stopped laughing. Wedge groove edges "roll over" from ball impact pretty quickly. five minutes, once a month, will take care of maintaining those wedges; get a hardened, inexpensive tool for the job. Now, at your level of play, it should be obvious that technique is more important than the "freshness" of the grooves-- but after 14 years of practice, I bet the faces of your wedges have become slightly concave--check that with a straightedge across the face. Concave face = no good, get some new wedges.

The grips aren't 14 years old, are they?

Based on this: Informational Club Database | United States Golf Associationthe CG-10 doesn't meet the 2010 groove rules. They are still legal for most play until 2024 for most competitions, although not for some high-level amateur events. This might influence your decision to buy something new.

Wedges are cheap, buy new.

I’m left scratching my head:

”Wedge tech has moved on leaps and bounds”? Other than offering multiple grinds, what tech are we talking about?

And “Wedges are inexpensive” is a pretty relative statement. Many of us remember when new Vokeys/Cleveland, etc., were in the $100 range, not $150-plus. Shelling out $475 or more for a set of wedges that haven’t changed a whole lot (finishes and grinds) in 20 years seems steep to me.

I bough brand new in the plastic Cleveland wedges a few months ago. Paid $60 for a 52 and a 56. I think they were last years model. If a person isn’t tied to one person’s wedges, they can be had for not much, and your short game will thank you.

I read once about a guy in exactly your situation. He was going to take his wedges to a machine shop, have the face built up, machined to flat, then have new grooves cut in. Might have been trolling.
