Vokey Pw vs Stock Pw

I’m sure this has been talked about many time before. I am looking at picking up a Vokey 46 to replace my current PXG PW. I spoke to a fitter in my area and was told something about the wedges would need to be ported to remove weight to see a similar flight as my current PW. I’m just trying to see what other have done or should I just keep my current PW

I'm about 6 months into this same experiment. Replaced a Mizuno HM set PW with a Vokey 46. Reviewed a bunch of threads on here to get others' experiences doing this and didn't see anything about weight porting the Vokey and I didnt do so (although I did order the 46 with an S300 shaft to match my set). Certainly the Vokey 46 flights several yards lower than my set PW, but that was a part of why I made the change in the first place. Stopping power is the same. Another part of my thinking in making the change was that I usually hit my 58, 54 and 50 with pretty consistent control for line and distance. When pull a specialty wedge from my bag, mentally I feel that the ball is definitely going on the green and probably in the vicinity of the flag. Very positive mentally for me. I thought I'd sneak that degree of confidence into my bag for one club longer...the PW. It has worked well for me. I think maybe the "control" and confidence advantage of a specialty wedge might be reduced a bit to the extent a person is already playing a reasonably compact players' iron. I played MP60s for years and never thought to switch out the PW. I loved the MP60 set PW. It was only went I went to the game improvement HM irons that the set PW just didnt feel quite right for a scoring club.

Using a Vokey wedge is mainly about - 1. aiming better, the Vokey isn't constricted by looking like the rest of the set and 2. its probably much easier to use on non-full shots because the grind slides.

However, I don't understand why you would buy a Vokey and then do crazy surgery on the weight so it would be like the PXG. If you're going to do that just keep the PXG.

Nobody has any idea if you should keep your current PW because you've provided no information at all on what you are trying to accomplish, why you don't like your current PXG PW, etc... The Vokey will almost certainly fly lower and spin more on an identical strike but will like by much worse out of the toe.

I would question the ability of that fitter if he's talking about porting out a Vokey PW..... that is a very common club swap for a lot of players. I love my MP20 MB pitching wedge but if I was in the MMC or 785 I'd swap it out for the Vokey. No porting needed.

I have gone back and forth on this experiment several times, and always land back on the set PW. For me, it fits my iron yardages better and is more consistent. I do utilize a 52 bent to 50 as more of a partial yardage shot from 60-110 yardage.

Felt like I got less consistent yardage and more spin with the “specialty wedge.” It isn’t for everyone and I can see how some people like it. I did not remove any weight or anything special, other than matching the iron shaft.

I tried a 46* PW for a bit in place of a Z745 PW and I found it to be quite a bit shorter distance wise... my 52 was just about as along which really jacked up my gaps... went back to the set PW and all was fine again. The Vokey looks great but I thought it felt like garbage and just underperformed. I do not think porting it would have helped at all... just me.

Had a 46* Vokey SM7 and my 919 Tour PW and ran that little experiment for a while along with a Cobra MB Pitching Wedge. There are definitely a few things to consider:

THe 919 is considered a CB with style, technically. Not at bladey as an SM7. The forgiveness between the two isn't a ton but there is some.

I put the S400 shaft in my SM7 where as I ran X100s in all my PW. The adjustment took a little getting used to but, that was dumb on my part, again.

Since this, I've gotten rid of my SM7 46. I like to run a stock PW and match the set up as much as possible. IMO, you can't go wrong with either. I'm fully still happy with my SM7 54 and 50 wedges.

This is a good point. I had a set of MP5 I got from GlobalGolf at a massive discount but the set was 4-9. Was playing an SM6 PW with it and was way short on distance. Ended up returning them because of this. In fairness I was playing it with the stock wedge flex but I was just overspinning it. Felt kind of like when your wedge head/shaft combo is out of whack and hitting it harder just makes it go higher.

Just my opinion but if you are using your PW for a lot of touch shots, chipping etc....than a vokey might make sense

On full swings i'd rather use a set PW. I actually only have 1 true "wedge" and that's my 60 degree lob wedge. My gap and sand wedge are both set wedges since i mostly use them for full swings.

Its a good debate but it really came down to 2 points for me. My stock pw from my set was better for full shots from the fairway, the vokey was better for "less than full" shots and around the green.

I tinkered with both for weeks before reaching my conclusion.

I was lucky to have a spot in my bag for the stock pw and also a 50*. I carry 4 wedges. After decades of playing I decided the short game was the priority for scoring lower

Just ask yourself where the real need exists more, keep some stats for a few rounds and just do the math. Numbers don't lie!

I played a 46 Vokey for a long time in 2018 and again tried it in 2019. If you are playing GI irons then your set wedge will probably perform better on full swings and help more with mishits. But the Vokey flies lower, spun more (for me) and was easier to make 3/4, 1/2 and chips with. Just tinker around with both and see what you like!

Will you use the 46* primarily as a wedge (finesse shots) or as a 10 iron (lots of full shots)? If you are emphasizing wedge shots, the Vokey might be better.

But if you want similar flight to the PXG, why bother?
