Pro V1, Z-Star XV, or TP5x To Cut Spin?

Andus

Recommended Posts

I'm currently playing the V1x but have been spinning the ball way too much for far too long. I won't lie, there's just something about backing a ball up 20 feet that I love but in reality it's causing me to play worse. With that being said, I'm looking to make a switch. Considering normal Pro V1, Z-Star XV and TP5X. I'm a bit afraid that the normal ProV will still spin too much for me but I really don't know too much about golf balls. My driver SS is 111-113 and my 7 iron SS is about 94MPH. Not sure if that matters but please let me know your opinions!

What ball do you play now?

I got a ball fitting last November and what I found was that the real difference in spin comes on mid and longer irons... then it starts mattering less and less as you go away from those clubs. Wedge spin with Chrome Soft X and ProV1X and TP5X was all similar, but 6i spin was dramatically different, then back to driver spin being relatively in the same ball park again.

My final word here will be two parts:

1) No idea what skill level you are but you should learn to hit shots with less spin. This means instead of blasting a sand wedge into orbit and watching it rip back 20+ feet... learn to hit that shot the same distance but with a PW. It won't spin back... but it will still stop very fast. Less loft will almost always generate less spin, all else equal.

2) If you're dead set on a lower spin ball, the lowest I've seen in the tour category has been the TP5X. It was a solid 1000 RPM less spin off my 6i than the Chrome Soft X and about 600 less than ProV1x. Again, the wedge spin was pretty comparable but that was just my numbers... you could see differently.

Awesome, very good information and a good tip too! Even my 7 iron shots are generally a few feet behind my divots, maybe the greens in Florida are just too soft. I hit on trackman within a few months and my 7 iron is spinning around 8,000RPM. Too much loft presented at strike which I'm working on, but a lower spin ball would definitely help too.

EDIT: I'm currently playing the 2018 ProV1x

I have/had a similar issue as you. I was using the cromesoft but even my 7/8i would go back a few feet so distances were tough to judge. Even wedge was hard to tell if I was going to have it stop or just run back. Easily could be my consistency too.

I'm still testing what works best for me but it's down between the ZV and TP5x.

The differences I noticed and this is on my swing.

On regular mid full irons both the ZV and TP5x would take one bounce and stop. On wedges on high irons with a 3/4 both swing stop pretty much where landing. If I really stepped on it with a wedge both would still back up the ZV a little more but not much.

Right now I am personally leaning toward the TP5x as it seems to give me a lower ball flight on full shots and I have a tendency to launch high. Not fun in the Florida winter when the winds can pick up.

I like the XV for less spin off everything but the wedges.. I think with all of these tour balls, they are designed to spin around the greens so you'll most likely rip them all back shot for shot to some extent. Like previously stated, it might be worth trying to hit different shots... 8000 rpm with a 7 iron does seem high. Any chance you could strengthen lofts a touch? What shafts are you playing in your irons?

Do you happen to know your trackman numbers? AoA? Spin loft? Dynamic loft? 7 iron swing speed? I am also a high spin player. I will spin it 4K with my driver. I'm upwards of 8 to 9K with a 7 iron. I have played the MTB-x, Prov1X, prov1 all spin too much. The Zstar, BX, XV, all are a tolerable amount of spin but I still want less. QST, BRX, MTB black seem to be just about right spin wise. The lower compression balls feel better in the lower temps too

ย

I haven't played the TP5X, but I heard it's great at cutting spin

Definitely a dynamic loft issue. Tp5X will probably help a little bit but I found the ball also launches a considerable amount more too... maybe 1-2* more on my 6i. I was hitting the TP5X up to 15 yards further than chrome soft x... just ended up losing control of where the ball was going when spin is that low.

So I'd give that ball a try but also see a coach. Could be as simple as you have a little bit of an open face at impact and maybe you get a touch steep. Boom... there's your high spin. No ball is going to help 4k driver spin my friend. That's a strike issue, probably also combined with high(er) spin loft from maybe hitting down a little bit and/or adding loft via open face to path. Next time you're on a launch monitor, bring some Foot spray and note your spin when you strike the ball higher on the face & out toward the toe. Almost 0 chance you'll have 4k spin then.

Very true. I'm in the process of changing my swing and I am delivering a lot less loft to the ball on all my clubs. Seeing my trackman spin numbers is the reason I decided to make some changes. Hopefully by the time I'm done with the changes I can be hitting up on the ball with my driver

Wow that is some absurd spin. I can't imagine how much distance you lose hitting into a headwind. I don't know all of my exact trackman numbers but I swing my 7 iron generally about 92-94mph and only carry it 169-174. Playing the AMT X100 shafts and to be honest, I'm not much of a fan. I came from Nippon shafts which feel way smoother so I think ill go back to the Modus 120X

ย

Getting back on topic though, I definitely think I'm going to give the TP5X a try. Everybody says it drops spin where you'd want to drop it.

Bridgestone Tour BX is what you want.

The TP5x will be too dramatically different in your mid-irons (it spins very very low in the middle of the bag), and the ProV1 is very close to the V1X in spin. The Srixon XV could be good, but I really think the BX will be the middle ground between the TP5X and the V1 line, with a better spin separation from high spin on short clubs and low spin on long and mid spin in the middle of the bag.

You could find the TP5x to be too low spin all around, which caused my mid irons to be a bit unpredictable and my gaps to be different than I wanted.

ย

I switch between the V1X and the BX depending on conditions. When its hard and fast, the V1X helps me score better, but I does go a few yards less on my mid-irons.

True, I didn't even think to add the Tour BX. The one thing I hear a lot of people say is that the Tour BX is terrific into the wind.

It is the best balanced ball for me. Smooth transition from very low driver spin, to high green side spin. It plays hop and stop on well struck partial wedges.

The V1x is certainly higher spin throughout the bag, the V1 is closer, but still higher than the BX. The BX is also closer to the V1X in feel. It feels a tad softer than the V1X, but definitively firmer than V1.

Sometimes I do need/want more spin, and I pull out the V1X, but the overall best ball most days remains the Tour BX for me. I carry 8-10 of each in the bag.

I don't love the TP5X, its way too low spin in the mid irons, and the V1 line and BX spin more into/around the greens.

Driver Spin (lowest-highest): Tour BX, TP5X, V1, V1X

Approach Spin (lowest-highest): TP5X, Tour BX, V1, V1X

Greenside spin (lowest-highest): TP5X, V1 = Tour BX, V1X

Trajectory (lowest-highest): V1, Tour BX, V1X = TP5X

Driver Distance (lowest-highest): V1, V1X = TP5X, Tour BX

Feel (softest-firmest): V1, Tour BX, V1X, TP5X

Durability: All about the same... unless you take out a tree or a cart path, they hold up very well.

At first, yes, as I was coming from using the AVX and a chrome soft, however I got used to it very quickly. It is significantly softer/less clicky than the distance surlyn offerings like top-flite/pinnicle or similar. I think the cover is so soft that it makes it less clicky, but it is certainly higher compression than a standard ProV1, so its not unexpected.

On full shots, however, I find it to be surprisingly soft given its compression. Maybe this has to due with the "hydrocore" technology that bridgestone touts since the B330 offerings, but it feels softer off the irons and wedges than the ProV1x and TP5X offerings.

Give the TP5X a go. I did a few seasons ago after playing Titleist since the Professional 90 era. Went from ProV1X to TM. Iโ€™ve got no idea on my iron swing speeds anymore but I can give my 716CB 7 iron a solid swipe from 175 and be good. Even a PW will hit and maybe come back a foot or two and not rip back 5 yards.

Bridgestone Tour BX is what you need. I recommend you to use it at least 3 or 4 months, withount changing to other balls. The results will come quite fast.

So I just finished 18 holes today, played the Tour BX the whole round and lost 1 ball (which for me is pretty good). I play to a 12-13 cap, my biggest struggle being off the tee. I definitely felt that the spin was much more controllable and was more of a drop and stop than a 20 foot backup. I can't say that I love the look of the dimples but I could totally get over that if it continues to perform. Distance wise there really wasn't much in it for me, felt negligible. I had one shot on a par 3 with my 8 iron (38 degrees) that spun back about 15 feet (landed on a slight incline) but other than that, wedges were night and day different for me. Going to try to ProV1 and TP5X in the next week or two.

Thanks for all of the input!

TP5x, to me, has the least spin on mid irons. I found it shorter than the BX with about the same spin. I didnโ€™t feel the ball speed was good.
