P790 gaping

Hi Guys.. just got a set of P790s 2019 model moving from a set of MP5s. My MP5s had a wedge lofted 46 degree and worked well with my 50 Vokey. The new P790 wedge loft at 45 is flying 5-10 further than the old MP5 so I’m thinking I may need to drop the Vokey 50 and replace with a 48 degree but that then leads to a big gap to my 56 degree Vokey. Haven’t had time to do a full gaping session yet with the weather being bad and Xmas approaching, so I just wanted some feedback from P790 players on what wedge setup they are playing. Thanks

I was fitted late summer for the new P790s. Did you consider going with the set gap wedge? It’s a 50 degree. Works really well in my opinion. I get a perfect 10-15 years between the PW and the GW. PW goes 145-150 and GW is 130-135. From there I go 54 SW which is 115-120 and 58 LW which is my 100 yard club. When I got fitted my pro was pretty adamant on going with the set gap wedge as he thinks it just flows with the set easier. I think he is right to be honest. If you don’t want the set gap and want a specialty wedge than a gapping session is probably in order. Great sticks btw.

Either the set GW, or bend your 790s 1* weak. That 1/2 club extra yardage will shrink to about 1/3, which is manageable.

The lofts of the 790’s pretty much force you to get a gap wedge, the one from the set works well for me on full shots. On punch’s and knock downs I don’t like it, so am considering a Vokey 50* to replace it since those shots need touch and spin. I then have a 56 and 60, so always a little more space between my 56 and the gap than my old setup with a 52

’19 790 user as well. Have the set 50* gap wedge, but I find the 48* MG2 a better option to bag. Distance very comparable but more workable for those partial in between shots.

Hey Jim. What did you end up doing? I’m in the same boat as you ...

Would you recommend selling the set AW and getting a 48 or 50 Jaws wedge? My other 2 wedges are 54 and 58. Thanks!

Did you end up end up replacing it with the vokey?

I ended up replacing the entire set with T100S, but yes I would have 100% ended up with vokey in that slot.  I have loved my 50* vokey so far since adding that in.  Excllent for chipping, as the set GW don't spin at all on touch shots.

The GW slot is a modern invention created by vanity-lofting our heads. Grrr.

That said, I have found 3 solutions that work, for me:

- Iron GW head with my wedge shaft in it (eg. I play Cobra MBs, so the Cobra MB GW with Rifle Spinner 7.0);

- 50° wedge head with my iron shaft in it (eg. Vokey 250/8 w/ C-Taper 130x);

- Bend my irons 2° weak to get more traditional lofts, and skip the G slot altogether. This has the added benefit of reducing offset, and adding a little bounce, esp to the PW.
(Eg. my backup Adams MB2s are bent to a 48° PW; then I go 52/ 58 in the SW and LW; this works especially well b/c the MB2s already look like wedges - raw finish, thin top line, milled face, good grooves - so I can play that PW just like a 50° wedge - iron shaft, but SSx1 = 9i CT130x.)
It also gives me an extra long club, which goes to a driving iron or lofted hybrid, depending on the course.

YMMV!

I've found set wedges to fly further than anticipated due more to ball speed vs. loft. Modern irons are so darn efficient compared to specialty wedges I've all but given up looking at loft numbers. For me it's all about how far the ball carries and stops.

With that said trying to properly gap a modern set of player distance type irons can be frustrating. For example, my set gap wedge is 46*, however due to ball speed my first specialty wedge is 48*. Now if I want to play down to a 60* I either have to deal with larger distance gaps or drop a long club.

Rather than fight this, I use my highest lofted wedge as an anchor point and build the set from the bottom up. Doing so provides me with the gapping I want in the scoring zone and results in a 6i being my longest iron with 15-25 yard gaps above 200 yards.
