Struggling with irons

Hey guys, would love some feedback on my swing. Really struggling to get it right with irons, especially anything under an 8 or 7.

Ive never really had lessons before, just a one hour session which was in a group so there wasn't much time to get feedback. Been watching tonnes of videos lately and I'm struggling to put everything together into my swing. Nearly every hit that does come off nicely is a slice so I try to "uppercut" the ball which then results in me chunking it and taking 4 inches of ground before i get to the ball. Any help would be highly appreciated! Here's a front on and behind view of a few swings from today.

I would start by getting a bit further away from the golf ball at address. Being so close is causing you to swing very steep. There should be a palm width of space between your hands and right thigh at address. Post another down the line video after you've altered the set-up! I'd love to help.

Thanks for the help, you're right I'm standing a little close. Will try it and out and update this thread

+1 to standing a bit further away. It's causing you to stand up quite a bit on your backswing and at impact (YouTube early extension). Also you need to rotate with your body more. Hips/pelvis should be rotating back more on your backswing, and at impact your hips should about 45deg open to your target. Arm/wrist positions look good though!

Watched a few videos on early extension and it looks like exactly what I'm struggling with.. along with not rotating enough. This should help a lot. Cheers!

Tried addressing the things above, definitely feels better when hitting the ball square and noticing a lot more distance. However still cant hit a draw to save my life and nearly everything is sliced

Thanks lane, when I close my stance I usually end up chunking it heavily. Guess I have to find that middle ground. I'll give it a shot on the range next time and I'll try to exaggerate closing the face of my club to feel what it's like to hit hard hooks

Not to promote anyone of these guys in particular but I'd strongly suggest picking a YouTube teacher that has a lot of videos (and research to a back it up) and just dive in.

AMG, George G, Clement, Monte (he's on wrx too so you can read a ton), me and my golf, etc etc.

There are fundamentals that you are missing that others have pointed out that show you just have a few mental misconceptions about the swing. Once you reorient yourself the game will all the sudden click mentally, then with some practice time doing specific drills (which is why you should stick to just one teaching paradigm), you'll develop a fundamentally sound swing.

I think it's time to step back and go to the basics. I've been picking from different youtubers and feel im trying to remember too many different things when swinging, I just had a look at AMG and their vids look great.. I'll update here again once I make some progress

Awesome! In the down the line video, you can see what appears to be a light pole off in the distance. Next time you go to the range, try to set up in approximately the same spot. Lay down a club pointing 20 yards left of the pole. Set your feet parallel to that club. Then, when you're swinging, attempt to swing out to the pole aka very right of your foot line. This will lead to the opposite of what we're doing now. Instead of pulls or slices, you'll get pushes and draws. Over-do it like the above gentleman said, boom you're good to go!

Just an FYI to add to the advice already here; you get a little too much arm extension at the top. I know when I reach back too far past parallel it changes my swing path too much to recover and usually results in the chunks & mis-hits you're experiencing.

Hate to say this but you are going to struggle to hit good irons with your current swing. Things I see that are hurting you:

1) Very little lower body. The swing should be driven by the lower body, legs, hip turn. You are mainly just swinging your arms. The golf swing is rotational and the rotation comes from the lower body.

2) No width and depth on the back swing.

3) Early wrist cock.

4) Weak left arm.

5) Rotating your forearms and face open in the early part of the back swing, near impossible to bring it back square at impact.

6) No balance, look at your finish. Your legs need to be working into the ground.

Check out Larry Cheung videos on YouTube, you can probably even do online lessons.

There is no point practicing on the range if you are just practicing bad habits.

I know you have a lot of tips that have been already shared with you. One little thing I would suggest is try and get your hands a little more forward at impact. That should help you hit the ball more pure and consistent and to compress the ball. Also try and your you body to turn more that may need to be a change you try and tackle later on but something just think about. Hopefully that helps!
