Rest In Peace: Adams RPM Redline 5050

Well, after 12-13 years, my Adams 5050 died today (at least pretty sure it is dead). Was at the range hitting balls and all of a sudden the club made a funny sound at impact and when I looked down, the top had literally blown off of the head. I always knew the crown on the 5050 was carbon fiber, but didn't quite realize how it was put together. Now I know :)

Not sure if I can just epoxy the crown back on again or not. Thankfully I do have backups of this head so getting another into play won't be an issue, just kinda sad that this one is a goner.

Curious if anyone else out there who played this head (or any carbon fiber head) and saw a similar type of failure. Also would be interested to know from any club builders if you can epoxy the crown back on and keep playing it. This has just been a phenomenal fairway wood head. Have tried all the new stuff every year and nothing performs better for me which is why I stocked up on backups when people moved on to the "latest and greatest" fairway metals. The ability to hit this confidently off a tee or the deck is (IMHO) unmatched by any modern clubs.

@dpark On the one hand, I’m sorry your trusty fairway came apart on you. On the other hand, it is the first time I’ve seen one of them come apart like that...and it is somehow cool to see how it was originally assembled.

Yeah that was about the only good thing about it. The face had ZERO chance of every caving in, at least by looking at the face from the inside. Pretty solid-looking construction. Obviously no hotmelt was ever used on the head. I didn't know that was how the weight port was shaped on the inside. I knew when you plugged the hole, the plastic insert you stuck in was like the tip of a very narrow pencil, but I thought it was tapered just to fit it in the hole snugly. I had no idea there was a conical structure inside that the plug fit into.

I saw yours is 16* but if you want a 14*5 to replace it, hit me up.

Very kind of you, but I have several backups in both 16* and 14.5* that I bought over the years as they came up for sale just in case something like this happened.

Sorry for your loss--- Did the crown come off in one piece? If it did I would clean the old residue off and re epoxy it for kicks and giggles and see how it holds up

So finally going to TopGolf tonight to see if the “convertible” 5050 is toast or not.

Bringing the backup with a Matrix Code-8 shaft in matching 16* and also a 5050 in 14.5* with the same matrix shaft

Well, independent of performance, the "convertible" 5050 sounded AWFUL. Worse than the Nike Sasquatch :)

On the performance side there was a difference in distance between the topless 5050 and an undamaged 5050. It wasn't a massive loss of distance, probably a 1/2 club.

Will glue the crown back on and try again in a couple of weeks.

Well a shot that should normally carry 205-210 (it was 32* outside) carried 187. And it did sound awful. Here is a video clip.

Will be back at TopGolf in a couple of weeks and will hit it again with the top glued back on and we'll see show she does.

First mistake is going to topgolf. I'm convinced their oddly weighted sensor golf balls are club killers

Not sure if you read the entire thread. The club is 12-13 years old and as a "tour only" head. Adams isn't even in business anymore (bought by TM). Definitely not under warranty.

I have many backups, I was just curious if the club was still playable. Without the crown, it does not appear to be so. Will glue the crown back on an hit it again in a few weeks when I will be back at TopGolf. If the 24 hour glue actually works and the club still performs, I will probably stick it in my out of state backup bag. If it still sucks or the crown pops off again, I'll pull the shaft and have a nice ceremony for the head in my backyard :)

This was one of the oldest clubs in my bag. The other club is an Adams A2P hybrid. Both were acquired around the same time in ~2007 if memory serves me correctly.

So crown is glued back on. Took it to a regular range today, It held together fine and sounded like before. Distance seemed good, but until I get back to TopGolf to run the numbers won't know for sure. It looks OK but you can see the cracks around the head where the crown fit in. Will probably add black paint if I move it to one of my backup bags.
