Hit the Cobra Speedzone and Speedzone Xtreme today

Short but sweet post, was able to hit the Cobra Speedzone and Xtreme clubs today. The Xtreme is just like cheating and it didn't seem to matter what kind of swing I made, every shot was exactly the same. Was using the new Aldila Rogue Silver 110 stiff. REALLY looking forward to this club and the best way to describe it would be a better looking and sounding Ping G400 Max. Spin was just a hair higher than the regular version with the heavy weight forward but it was so easy to hit and so consistent I didn't even care. The other benefit it has over the G400 Max is you can lower the loft all the way down to 7* which will be a huge benefit if you already hit it high enough but want the extra consistency.

The standard Speedzone was a little disappointing if I'm honest just because it really doesn't improve on the F9. In fact, the sound is a step backwards. It's still a fantastic driver but if you already have the F9 then just keep it. The sound isn't bad but it's louder and more of a metallic pop than the more sweet sounding muted smack the F9 possesses. The look at address is cleaner with less going on than the F9 but really not that big of a deal.

I preordered both the regular and Xtreme but already know I'm going to sell of the regular and keep the Xtreme once they arrive.

Short and sweet, I like this review. I will be in the driver market in the next few months and the SZ had my curiosity until I watched some reviews of it not being better than the F9, as you stated. Interested in the Extreme though now that you've had some positive things to say... May even just roll with the F9.

The F9 is a fantastic driver for a great price BUT I would definitely go through a thorough fit for it. It spun a lot for me. I hit some of the longest drives I’ve ever hit with it but it could also be block city at times (a touring pro also said this to me of the 9*) and I couldn’t keep the spin down. I think one of the best things about the new version being SO similar is that a fitting for it will likely translate to the older version as well.

Demoed Speedzone Extreme extensively on a monitor last week with Aldila 110Stiff. Spin was between 1900-2300 depending upon my swing. Feel, sound and dispersion excellent on the monitor. Of course it remains to be seen how it performs outdoors. Ordered the White model which I preferred over the shiny black head. Can’t wait to get my hands on it! Also hit a few with the Regular Speedzone and didn’t lower spin or gain anything over the Extreme. Also hit F9 and the ball speed was identical to the Speedzone which is what head to head UTube reviews are showing. However the idea of low spin and forgiving really intrigued me and that’s why I paid extra for the Peedzone over the F9

My buddy has one and I have tried it a few times on course... it's either been straight and forgiving or a major miss right... so I believe you! LOL Still, I am very tempted... I have noticed the spin numbers being high when testing on a monitor as well, it's been my only real hesitation...

I’m interested in SZ Extreme, but for some reason the fairway woods work for me and the drivers not as much vs what I have (usually Ping, though I also am currently testing some JDM drivers). But I like the F9 3 wood so much I want to try a Cobra driver. One thing I really like about the F9 fairways is the feel and sound, so if the Extreme is the most like that it will be the one I try. Once you find a nice-sounding club, you don’t want to go back to trash-can cymbals.

I will echo the review above. The Cobra Speedzone driver didn't give me any better numbers than my F9, which I still like a lot. I think the F9 avalanche (white) looks cleaner than the Speedzone too, without the white or yellow stripes on the crown. The F9 driver will be staying in the bag for 2020.

My F9 fairway, on the other hand, is very much gone. The Cobra Speedzone Big Tour 3 wood is the best fairway wood I have ever hit. Fixes everything that was wrong with the F9 fairway. It's 2*+ flatter, it swing weights heavier, it spins less, just as forgiving on miss hits, and maybe even looks better too. Most importantly ..... I hooked zero balls off the virtual range (huge win). Don't let the 13.5* loft number keep you from swinging it, you will hit it higher than you think. Also hit the Speedzone Tour fairway as well. It sits more flat than the F9 Tour Fairway and looks much better this time around, but man if that thing isn't the blade of fairway woods. "Workable" can be a double edge sword and I clearly don't need a workable fairway wood. Sure is pretty though...

Thanks for the review. I did notice Rickie was also gaming the Extreme driver at Kapalua. I wonder why he is in that head vs the standard one.

Damn, that Tour fairway looks good, matte, compact. I doubt any reason to upgrade from the F9 Tour, but look good.

What is that no up charge smoke green listed? Is that the “hulk” shaft?

I’m sure he’s got it weighted so he gets optimum launch and spin. Tour van guys can hot-melt it and get it perfect. Probably not the stock off the shelf version. Same reason why guys are hitting M6 and not M5 Tour for TM - these guys smash the ball high-launch and low-spin, maybe too low sometimes.

Last year Rickie had to change iron shafts after he changed balls so I’m guessing this head gives better launch stats with his gamer ball.

Dustin Johnson often experiments with the more forgiving model at the beginning of the year, before switching to the less forgiving, adjustable model later. Last year he started with the M6 and later switched to the M5. Like rsh0308 said, tour pro's get their club heads hot melted to perform the same anyhow. Rickie also switched to a lower launching shaft (Tour AD IZ to Ventus Black). Maybe he is looking for more spin and higher launch. And some pros just like check out new stuff in the "offseason". I wouldn't read too much into this.https://www.pgatour.com/equipmentreport/2019/02/26/why-dustin-johnson-switches-drivers-equipment-clubs.html

The Smoke Green "Hulk" shaft is really only the Small Batch shaft in TX flex. It has a different bend profile than the stock shaft in softer flexes. The stock Smoke Green is pretty much the same shaft as the Smoke Black, but with a slightly firmer handle.

F9 guys..note that the speedzone is extremely forgiving across the face. None of the sometimes high spin from nowhere the F9 has. yes performance is similar, spin is lower a bit but forgiveness is out of sight.

If the SZ has alittle less spin, and is alittle more forgiving than the F9, then it will be worth it to me. I have been a big fan of the F9, but have the occasional high block, which I attribute to me coming up out of the swing (goat humping), but if the SZ reduces how far lateral that particular block goes, that would be valuable.

I had a chance to hit the extreme head today. I had hit the regular speedzone head a few days ago. The extreme head is very forgiving, but not any longer than my current EPIC SZ (original). That said, it's a great driver, and the forgiveness alone would be reason to change for anyone struggling with consistency. It is however.... pretty darn loud.

Ordered a SZ Extreme with some store credit. The shop called Friday and I picked it up yesterday but it was the regular SZ and not the extreme. Went with 9.0 and Aldila stock Stiff. Decided what the heck and kept it playing round one this morning. I will agree with others comments on the forgiveness across the face. Feels good, looks great in Black and White. Did not care for the shiny black and yellow model. Sounds polite when hit. Mid flight for me at 10.5 and runs like a track star when it hits the ground. I’ve got 90 days and 2 exchanges so I’m going to give this some time before trying the Extreme. I can tell you that the forgiveness in my hands is as good or better than the G410 and My ball speeds on the monitor were 3 miles higher than the F9. More to follow as Iget more time with this on the course.

10.5 loft. Sorry I wasn’t clear. First impressions after about an hour on the LM were very good. Today’s first round was good but I need more time to make definite conclusions. Need to go back to the store and compare the Extreme to the Regular model. Stay tuned. I’ll post more after my next round Saturday
