Returning a lost club

Recommended Posts

I'm very cautious about keeping track of my clubs when playing, but, of course, I couldn't find my new i500 pw when I made the turn last week. Stupid thing is, I didn't use it on the front, don't remember pulling it out of the bag , and noticed it missing on 11. I've been calling the course (a well known resort) twice a day to see if someone turned it in, but to no avail. Pretty disappointing - can't tell you how many clubs I've picked up over the years, and I never considered keeping them. Golf etiquette, consideration/manners I suppose. I'm resigned to the fact that I'll have to shell out full freight to Ping to get a replacement.

I dont understand why people keep clubs. I could see keeping a the head of a driver someone snapped the shaft off of but random irons and wedges? What are you going to do with em...sell em on ebay for 20 bucks?

I'm confused, if you never pulled the club from your bag, never hit a shot with it - then it seems pointless calling the course, as there was nothing for anyone to turn in.

Seems you need to figure out where else and how else you lost it.

I know what you mean. Who wants to keep a random 7i? That said, I bet wedges are the most commonly forgotten club, even in pairs, and they are worth a bit more than a random club from a set*.

I've often had a playing partner leave his wedges by the green after putting out, and I think I've done it once or twice as well. We've also found wedges left by the green by groups playing ahead of us. We always return any clubs we find, and have always had ours returned as well.

If it's just lying on the ground near the green I'll pick it up and try and return it. Chances are it was someone just ahead of me. If I don't find the owner I'll hand it in at the pro shop. If it's propped up somewhere, moved out of the way I'll leave since it's likely someone else has already reported it and the owner will be coming to get it.

I used to make a point of leaving my wedge on top of the flag pole if I'd carried it to the green on the grounds that no-one ever forgets to put the flag back in and they'd see my club. Unfortunately with the new rule change the flag is often left in so the trick doesn't work.

Mind you I also remember one time when someone picked up the flag pole then started carrying it toward their bag. They got several yards off the green before someone pointed it out :)

I hate people leaving their clubs on the flag. Unless you're the only person that puts the flag back in your group, it's extremely annoying. Put the clubs nearest your cart or bag.

Way back when I got some Ping Eye 2+ irons and they came with my first "L" wedge - a few weeks later was playing a local muni - noticed when I got home it was missing and immediately went back to the course and knew right where it should have been if nobody had found it. Well, someone found it and kept it because it wasn't where I left it and wasn't ever turned in. Not too many years ago I left a sand wedge out of town when playing with my dad and daughter a couple of days before she had a state qualifying meet at the course. When we were there a couple days later I checked and nothing had been turned in, but left my name and contact info. A couple of weeks later a Titleist guy was at our course and had done a demo day at the other course the week before and someone had given it to him to take to our area - first course he went to he asked and was told when he was at my course the next day that someone would know me and get it to me. Pretty neat.

I always pick up clubs found and if not tracked down on the course by folks coming backwards looking for lost clubs, turn them in, along with anything else equipment-wise I find. Can't imagine doing otherwise.

I had a 50* wedge returned one time. It I left a number for them to call if it came back, and they did call. When I went there 2 days later they said someone came in and claimed it.

I wasn’t very happy about that. And when I talked to the pro about it, neither was he.

Still haven’t replaced it and there’s a distance gap there now.

I play a course that has the lost and found in the middle of the pro shop. They have some sign about not finding something you didn't lose.

Dropped headcover at another course. When I went back the next week they told me to look in gazebo. The gazebo? They have a table under the gazebo between the carts and the putting green and they dump all the found stuff on the table. There was a lot of stuff there. Including my headcover.
