New GHIN website and app

Recommended Posts

The new site and app are out this morning. A few cool new features. You can enter scores hole by hole and hole by hole with stats. Looks like there is no option for entering an 18 hole score, you need to enter both 9s individually.

The app currently is very buggy. Slow. It also won’t allow me to search courses. If I enter a recently played course the “select tee” option doesn’t work and because of that you can’t post a score.

My handicap was a trend of 1.2 on December 31. Opened on the new WHS as a 0.9.

I haven't checked out the app yet, so I assume perhaps that is what you're referring to as hole-by-hole scoring and stats were availble on the website prior to the update. I always did hole by hole scoring (so I wouldn't accidently mess up my ESC) often entered stats as well. However, it appears those historical rounds and the stats along with them are now gone as I have no stats/history in my profile.

Also, anyone find it odd that you can log in with just a GHIN number and last name? I used to have to use a usename and password to log in on the old site.

I got in fine. Can't post yet.......awaiting for that feature to be open. I'm assuming that every player who cares about his/her index is logging in, so demand is probably unusually high.

The old eGolfer was a separate part of GHIN, that's where Hole by Hole and statistics were enabled. Entry into eGolfer required a user name and password, but you were always able to enter scores in the base website with a GHIN number and last name. The base website never allowed hole by hole entry, or stats. All of the eGolfer data went away in the changeover, I know our association let us know that a while ago, so we could save what we wanted to. All of your score history is still in the database, just not the additional stuff you entered through eGolfer.

In the new site, hole by hole and statistics will be available in the base website, as well as on the phone app and the golf course kiosk.

I tried poking around a bit. It's glitchy for sure. Only thing that was helpful was my 'cap and my last 20.

Like the other guy I got to the hbh posting part and was told the handicap holes weren't set up for that course yet so please post total score. Hitting the back button often gave me a blank page.

On GHIN one was able to post a score without "signing in" but couldn't post hbh.

I would think that the intention for people who previously posted hbh would be brought forward but I guess it's possible they decided to start fresh instead of converting everything from their old databases.

I guess some of this could be attributed to volume though. Even though 2/3 of the country is out of season the other 1/3 has had rounds accumulating for 5 days now and there are no doubt many of the other 2/3 checking out the new site.

I guess I didn't realize the distinction between eGolfer and the actual GHIN property. Seems a little unsecure to not require anything but GHIN # and last name as someone could mess around with postings if they knew those but I suppose you could just as easily have your club remove them if that was the case.

Agreed, it's been so long since I've had a physical GHIN card or known my GHIN number since I always just logged into eGolfer and entered my rounds there. I had to really search to find my GHIN number to log into the site this morning. I couldn't even tell you how my club communicates someone's GHIN # to them...

My first thought was I could log in as my buddy and post a bunch of 68’s to lower his cap.

Have you never used the app before? It's always been that way, both at the State association level and from the app.

Some clubs, and a few semis I have been to, have the handicap entry computer publicly accessible for posting and looking up. If they had the HDCP card printer, you can just look up anyone and print out a card for them, and it has the name and ghin number on it.

You've always signed into the GHIN app with just the member number and last name.

Not that secure, but I am sure that everyone involved in this game has a high level of integrity like Pat Reed.

No, I always entered hole by hole which couldn't be done through he app and was done via eGolfer desktop website. That site required a username and password to log in.

I just tried again on the website, and I got to the hole by hole entry screen. I checked a couple of Virginia courses, and they don't have the data loaded yet. I checked a couple of North Carolina courses, and everything came up properly. The same is true on the app. Hole by hole entry looks really simple. Its progress.

All of the Course Handicap calcs for my course are wrong. I think they have the par entered incorrectly. If they were correct then the woman in my group goes from getting 10 strokes from me down to just 5 which would insane. That would be back to where the group was not giving her full strokes for adjusting for the difference in course rating in the old system. We had a fight getting her the proper amount of strokes the last time.

I think we all need to check the Course Ratings and Slope and par and handicap numbering for our courses. One thing I've seen for a few NC courses is that the holes aren't listed in numerical order. @HatsForBats , is your course calculating her handicap based on the Men's ratings? That could explain the difference.

No. I put everyone on the correct tees. Even though they are the same physical tee box the men are set on the Men's rated tees and she is on the same tees but rated for women.

The 'men's' back tees are showing a Rating: 67.7 , Par: 68 but par is actually 70

The women's rating from the same tee is showing Rating 73.0 , Par 73 but Par is actually 70

Not sure how glitchy it actually is yet. It is clear that there is data or modules being loaded by the hour - as every time I look at it, there is more and more stuff.

However, it shouldn't be like this. They act like they are pulling all the stuff from this multitude of databases. The main GHIN database had all of this stuff in one place, just copy it over. It shouldn't be more than a few GB in size - you have under 100,000 courses in NA, and a few million golfers with handicap records. And there is no reason to initially copy over more than the last 50 scores + tournaments. You can worry about more history later after everything is up and working.

I was just able to enter my score from yesterday (total score) -- I had no score adjustments to make --- but was not able to do my hole-by-hole for 1/1/2020 because the front/back slope and ratings are not loaded for my home course yet. (they were in the old system)... Going to wait until I can do hole by hole for that, because I will max out on one hole where I should get a stroke. Took a 9, old system would be a 7, but for a par 5 with a stoke it should take an 8 in the new system.

I do wonder if you do hole by hole, if it will automatically apply the correct par+stroke(s), for unrecorded/unplayed holes to give you a 9 or 18 hole score when appropriate.

checking out the Golfshot app, after they did the revision for the new rules on 1/1/2020, doesn't look like they got the NDB max working right, and also in their blog it looks like they were using ESC max for unplayed holes prior. I sent them a request that they apply the par+strokes properly for unplayed holes.

The one thing I was told different from what you said is that the old GHIN didn't have the hole-by-hole data. Each club was required to get a copy of their scorecard to the regional association, who in turn were entering all of that data for par and handicap indexing of the holes. Some state associations have that job complete some are apparently still working on it.

Old GHIN website did have HBH (App did not). When I could be arsed, I'd use the simple data tracking available due to that.
