Bandon trip 4-man format suggestions?

erichake

Recommended Posts

Going to Bandon in Feb, playing 4 rounds over 3 days (18 - 36 -18) and looking for suggestions for a competition format for the trip. Handicaps of the 4 players are 6, 9, 13, 19. I'm going to use Scrolf to keep the competition score on my phone and am considering:

-Modified net Stableford

-Net scoring over 4 rounds

-4-ball (partner with each of the other 3 and play 1 round as an individual)

-2-man scramble match play

-Net skins

-others?

Getting a group caddie, btw.

I wouldn't overthink it. We've done similar trips in the past with hanicaps ranging from 8-13. We usually do $100 buy in, then do a large payout to the winner of the combined weekend, then payout the winner of each round as well (all net). We might do side games for beers, lunch, other cash bets as well.

Callaway Epic Speed- 8*

Callaway Rogue 5w

Srixon ZX7 3-PW

Titleist SM9- 50*, 54*, 58*

Scotty Cameron Special Select Newport 2

Titleist ProV1

We have two single digit caps + two up around your 19 fella and we keep it simple:

Fourball match (same team of pairs each day) for breakfasts the following morning + me and the other single play match each day, overall loser buys the winner a headcover + birdie king.

As Kas says don't over think, it's only 4 rounds. If our higher indexes were more consistent we'd likely do our usual fourball + individual Stableford, but even net, it'd be one of me or the other single digit winning.

The above guys are right, keep it simple. In my opinion, Bandon really exaggerates the difference between handicaps. Most 2 handicaps can play good golf on almost any course, but a guy who shoots 85 a lot on his home track might put up a really big number in the wind.

Our annual trip of 8 guys has everything from scratch to 22 handicaps, it started as a handicapped-stroke play event, but the same 2 guys won every dollar for 3 years in a row. Now we do a team match play format for each round/day. Teams are set upon arrival, highest cap with lowest cap and so on. 2 vs 2 match each round, only counting the better ball. Helps with the pace of play so guys arent grinding like a tour pro on a 4' putt for 7. Team with the best record gets all the money. Tied matches are settled on Punchbowl or Shortys, nothing can end in a tie.

Winning team has the option to split the money between the two of them, or play heads up on The Preserve for everything.

Yup pretty much like us. As you point out, the key is to give the fellas who are going to have a handful of snowmen a round something to keep them in it. They can quite literally contribute 1 or 2 holes in the match and it's enough to get their side a 1 Up win.

The way we have done it is to use the best (net) ball from each team, and if those tie, then you use the other members' balls. If those tie, then either the hole carries over or both teams get a half point.

Gives everyone a reason to keep playing a hole.

"take that, you miserable little white swine!"

We have an annual trip with 12 guys. We play for a perpetual trophy (leather carry bag + cash). We still have daily games and all that.

The first couple years we played net stableford, but found that guys still get buried and don't have a chance.

We play a four round net eclectic tournament now. The idea seemed a little hokey at first, but really keeps it interesting for every guy.

Our first trip was last year with a 8, 13, 20, and 27. After the first two rounds, we started playing Wolf so the 20 and 27 weren't getting pummeled. We ended up playing it for the rest of the rounds and wished we started sooner. Wolf is great because it adds a fun strategic element of selecting teams, you get to play with everyone throughout a round (including going lone wolf: 1v3), it keeps each hole interesting, and it keeps the high handicaps competitive. The 27 in the group ended up winning it all.

Going in April with a group of 8. We'll do Wolf for each round and an overall net stroke competition for the week.
