Anyone have any funky equipment in the bag?

Recommended Posts

long story short, a buddy at my club has a PRGR 2 iron that he tinkered around with, pulled the graphite shaft that was in there and put a old pull of a kbs tour steel 7 iron shaft he had in the garage. 7 iron shaft 2 iron head the thing looks funky but he hits it 210 on a straight line every time. He has fun with it and it’s cool to hit. So with that being said anyone ever experiment and tinker with equipment that normally wouldn’t match up but find success? Or have any cool stories to share?

I play one of two hickory shafted putters. One's a new replica of a very old Spalding model. The other is a center-shafted, face balanced mallet.

I'd go with higher tech if it let me putt any better, but so far, it doesn't seem to.

Don't most hybrid clubheads take a .370 iron shaft?

I assumed that, but not playing them, I didn't't know for sure.

I’ve got the weirdest bag west of Tom Lehman. Let me count the ways:

Wishon 919THI or Cobra LTD Pro at 9* and 43.5” with goobs of lead tape

Adams Tight Lies 2014 4 wood

SLDR 460 16* Thriver at 42” with goobs of lead tape

Nike Sumo2 5900 16* Thriver at 42” with goobs of lead tape

Nike Sumo2 5900 16* driver drilled out and reshafted with DG SL to play at 19* and 36.5” to fit within a SL set. Lie 62.5* ish. Hot melted to get to 285g head weight.

Cobra Bio Cell woods playing at 24* and 29*, 62.5* lie, 36.5” PX 6.5, 285g head weight

Tour Edge Hot Launch 2 Iron-Woods 7-LW. 36.5” on PX 6.5, 285g head weight, 62.5* lie

Cally PM Grind 60 at 35.5” for the short shots

PING Craz-E TR LH head shafted with RH 45” double-bend shaft to putt side-saddle

I’m a fairly fast swinger who can’t practice much due to bad back. Set out to make the stupid easiest bag possible to have fun with and win my annual buddy golf trip tourney. Goal achieved with the aid of lead tape and lots of JB Weld.

BEAT THAT

My irons are a little bit funky in a stealth way. The lofts were too strong for the length so I went with the very rare longer / flatter ploy.

The numbered irons are all ½" long and two degrees flat.

The 43W is ¼" long and 1½º flat.

The 48W and 53W are standard length and just 1º flat.

This makes them a little closer to my old DCI 962s.

@strug'-a-ling asked,
"Don't most hybrid clubheads take a .370 iron shaft?"
Yes, most do. But on occasion someone will put out a line that dips back into the old 0.350" shafts. I found out the hard way when I decided to go with a heavier shaft on my Adams V4 hybrid. Assuming all hybrids have 0.370" shaft hosels, I ordered a standard SteelFiber 780 HLS. Then, the clubsmith pulled the old shaft and found the HLS wouldn't fit because hosel was 0.350".
Several OEMs used the 0.350" tip shafts in long clubs during the 1990s. In the 2000s, Callaway had last used 0.350" graphite shafts in its RazrFit and RazrX long clubs from 2012. TaylorMade on occasion goes back to the 0.350" shaft, most recently in its AeroBurner driver and FWs.
The reason I mention this: Always check the shaft replacement guides for the different OEMs. You don't want to buy 0.370" or 0.335" or 0.355" shafts and find they don't fit the hosel.

Ping ISI K 2 & 3 irons with factory senior graphite shafts. I can't hit woods straight or good so I use these as my "driving" clubs. 4,5,6,7 irons TM MCGB with graphite. 8,9,PW,AW,SW Cobra F9 one length with graphite. 60 Callaway sure out and a Cameron & Crown newport. Weird make up but, works well for me. I have a lot of fun playing with these. I still have room for any other weird old club I might find on eBay with this set up as well.

The new irons were so strong lofted that the length wasn't sufficient for the loft.

The T300 6-iron is two degrees stronger than the DCI 962 5-iron is.

Bending the loft would alter the playing characteristic of the sole. We went longer and flatter instead.

My DCI 962s, which gave me two decades of good service, are set 1º flat at standard length.

The numbered irons of the T300 irons are ½" long and thus 2º flat.

The 43 wedge is ¼" long (brings it to 36") and 1½º flat, matching its progression to the numbered irons.

The 48 and 53º wedges are standard length (35½") and thus just 1º flat like the DCI 962s.

This makes the set feel a little more similar to the old DCI 962s, although they're more forgiving.

I have a Wilson Super Fly 76 degree wedge that is kind of in the rotation. My best man, who works for a Wilson associate company, gave it to me as a wedding gift, as there are maybe 10 of these remaining in stores.

It's the dumbest club I have ever seen, but I have hit a couple of decent flop shots with it. It also functions very well as a belly wedge.
