Hzrdus green stock vs small batch

Jbehan20

Recommended Posts

On another website a True Temper rep said the smoke green in the SIM is the real deal. Years ago we were led to believe the HZRDUS were different than the Handcrafted HZRDUS, but recently they said there is no difference.

I believe the "small batch" means they are hand rolled in San Diego while the non small batch labels are still hand rolled but overseas

It was a misperception that handcrafted were different, px never said they weren’t. Small batch doesn’t mean rolled in San Diego as several have had them come from overseas factory.

the small batch has been an indication of the TX flex in everything but the hzrdus green. Hzrdus green hulk is the TX flex while all other green have the small batch identifier.

Unfortunately it can be. The perception was that specs and materials of handcrafted shafts were different than the ones rolled overseas. I spent 2 days with PX several years ago and heard from them everything was the same. They handcrafted shafts were rolled by a handful of people and their production was around 60 shafts/day each iirc.

they moved all production overseas in 2018 to make room for the expansion of their r&d department as that became the main focus of the SD facility.

Their current website isn’t bad and each of the hzrdus shafts have the specs sectioned our by weight and flex. For example on the hzrdus yellow there is a section for the small batch 60 and another for the 70. With sections for the non small batch 60 and 70, whereas on the green there’s only 2 sections one for small batch 60 with 6.0, 6.5 and 6.5TX and another section with the same flexes in small batch 70

Wondering about this as well. I play the 6.5TX and am curious how the standard 6.5 from TM will play.

Only weird thing I found was this. For the 60g version, the torque rating from TM matches what PX has

HZRDUS Smoke Green - True Temper

But from the SIM product page, they show the 70G version in 6.5, but it has a lower torque rating (at least in the graphic) than what PX lists.

The Smoke Green "Hulk" shaft is really only the Small Batch shaft in TX flex. It has a different bend profile than the stock shaft in softer flexes. The stock Smoke Green is pretty much the same shaft as the Smoke Black, but with a slightly firmer handle.

It’s ridiculous that we STILL have to decipher what is “made for” and what is real deal. When are these manufacturers going to nut up and stop being so misleading?

My answer is going to be a bit different than what the other guys have said about this topic. I know one of the top clubfitters in Europe, and he told me there is significant difference. The main difference being the weighting and quality control. The standard shafts are being ordered by true temper in batches of 500 kilograms each and are not hand rolled, while the small batch shafts are being weighted properly and are made of better materials. Brands even make stock shafts labeled as expensive ones but are really nothing like the aftermarket shafts, fujikura directly told me this. While the quality is a lot better in the small batch shafts I wouldn’t say it has any significant difference unless you are scratch player or better.

Looked at the website today. The smoke green 60 specs For 6.0 and 6.5 match PX site and not the pic as discussed earlier. The 70 has no pic available and no specs showed up when selecting it for the sim and max driver and same for sim fw. I don’t want to assume but since the 60 specs match the px site I would say the 70 do as well and that they aren’t offering the tx flex even as an upcharge. No idea where they got the pic from.

I agree, its kind of a profit-driven corporate problem. The constant push towards reducing production costs and the negative perception that goes a long with the countries that end up being utilized. What rubs me a bit the wrong way here is with the HZRDUS line, you could pay extra if you wanted your "Made in USA" product, even if it was basically the same thing, and it was labeled as such (Handcrafted). Now they have this "Small Batch" designation that is indicative of what exactly? It certainly isn't quantity, eBay turns up 1,700+ results for "HZRDUS Small Batch" and there are the indications that these are not coming from the US either. It feels like they are trying to reach the same customer that "Handcrafted" did without actually giving them the USA made product they were paying for.

I’m curious just as the post above mentioned. I picked up a small batch 6.5 70 “x” flex but the labeling states 2.8 torque but that is for the 6.5 “tx” model as the specs display on their site. If I’m correct the torque for the 6.5 70g “X” should be 3.2. I’m guessing this is just a spec sheet error or I have something custom built???

My guess is that its a labeling error with the torque number. This kind of thing has happened before with the HZRDUS shafts.

Aren't the tolerances supposed to be tighter for the small batch since you're paying more? If they can't get the labeling correct then what other quality control issues are happening that you're paying more to avoid? I've never been convinced the small batch was any different than the standard, especially now that they are being produced in China to keep up with demand. I'd love a specific explanation from true temper as to what "tighter tolerance" means between the standard and small batch.

Agreed. I think it was generally enough before when the "Handcrafted" shafts were made in San Diego. Buying a "handmade" American product allowed you to overlook the lack of any real detail about supposed tighter tolerances, but now that they're all being made in China? The optics aren't great, and with how tightly controlled most aspects of modern manufacturing tend to be, you could easily claim "tighter tolerance" even if the difference is miniscule. Like slot machines that claim they pay out more than anyone else. They're all computer controlled and 0.0001% is still technically "more".

It's possible that the Smoke Green 6.0 has the same overall stiffness (frequency) as the Smoke Black 6.0, despite the fact that Smoke Green has a slightly stiffer handle. That being said, Smoke Green could still be a better fit for you than Smoke Black at the same shaft flex.

I just purchased the HZRDUS Smoke Green 70 Small Batch 6.5 X PVD.

According to the website, the only difference is 2 grams in weight between that one and the TX version. Is there a difference in stiffness profile, materials, as well?

I paid a premium for Small Batch so I'd just like to make sure.
