Won a set of PING G700 Green Dot irons. Do I get fitted to these clubs or sell and get custom set?

I am relatively new to golf (never had a formal lesson). I am a 28-30 handicap and I am of shorter build (5'6). My current clubs are 15 year old clubs from a friend. Just wondering if I should get fitted to these clubs (or if they can fit me to them) or if I should go in and buy a custom set from a fitter. Thanks!

You can visit good golf shop and being fitted. Once you know the color dot, you can send the irons to Ping and they will change the lies ( dot) for you unless the shafts don't fit you. Then you can sell them and get new or used set to fit you.

Congrats for winning the Ping set.

Edit: The two posters above and I were typing at the same time and are pretty much on the same page, though I THINK I'm suggesting slightly a different approach than Phil Major. (I think he might be suggesting you send them back yourself after being fit?). My take is that you rely on the fitter to deal with Ping if any adjustments are needed. They deal with Ping all the time and know the in's and outs, what to request, can check them for you when they come back etc.

Green dot are more upright. We of course don't know if the length is good for you either. I think I'd see if you can find a Ping fitter in your area. Call them and tell them your situation and see if they will check them out for you if you come in. They can measure and see if these could be a fit for you and if not if they can be adjusted by Ping to fit you.

There is also the ussue that if you do decide to take lessons that you will need to have club adjustments later anyway as your technique changes. But starting out with a good fit tom your measurements will help.

Re-read the initial OP post and should have addressed the specific 5'6" hight aspect and the green dot lie angle. As stated agove, green dot according to the Ping color chart are 2.25 degrees upright, which would not/should not be a good fit for someone at 5'6". Off the top of my head, you should be either an orange dot (2 degrees flat) or a brown dot (3 degrees flat). It's very doubtfull that Ping will/would bend those green dots 4 or 5 degrees, but a phone call to Ping can verify that. Most definitly go and get a proper fitting. You may even find out that the shaft lengths may have to be slightly shortened also.

Static Ping fit, maybe red dot, - 1/2 inch. Definitely see about getting them adjusted by Ping ... only by Ping ... and congratulations on joining the Ping cult!

Did you "win" them as in a prize, or did you bid on an auction? If the latter, is it possible to cancel the transaction. As mentioned above it's likely that they won't be able to be adjusted to you if you need 2* flat or more. Additionally, is the shaft and shaft flex correct for you? Club length is more manageable for fixing.

That’s news to me. I figured if you are playing Pings you would just get the correct lie and length for your body and swing. Ping has had that color custom shaft forever. If he’s just starting golf he should sell the Pings and get a used set of forged cavity backs and get them bent and adjusted to the correct length.

That notch in the hosel allows for easier bending if I recall correctly. Even when you order the lie you need, the lie is achieved at PING via bending at the hosel. Then the color code paint is applied.

You can bend them a couple of degrees without fear of them snapping. I've done this countless times. They take a bit more muscle to move them than a forged club of course but they go pretty good.

I have read through other posts in this thread, and this is just me, but I wouldn't have a shop bend past 2 degrees. Green to Red is 3 degrees. I would feel much more comfortable having Ping adjust them. But def get fit first. The lie angle is mostly going to be dependent on your general swing plane. The more upright you swing, the more upright club you likely need. You can be shorter and still have an upright swing.

Sending them to Ping, they'll also change the dot color to the appropriate one on their chart.
