French Lick Golf Trip

Hey Guys,

Going on the annual golf trip this year with our entire crew at the end of May....

We were out at Wolf Creek and Sand Hollow last year and now we have picked somewhere closer to where most of us live in Nashville. We will be staying in French Lick Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and leaving Monday. We already have 36 holes at the Donald Ross Course and 36 at the Dye course already planned out...

My questions for the experts here is this...Where should we play Friday during the day while waiting on the whole crew to arrive? Initially we were thinking about hitting up the Valley Course in French Lick that morning to get a good warm up round in. Then our travel day (Monday) allows us one round on our way home which is looking like Sultan's Run unless someone has a better option! Any other advise on the French Lick area is super welcome as well!!

I've played all of these except the Valley and the Dye (walked it for a tourney though). I'm not aware of any other good golf in the area besides the courses you've listed. Have been to French Lick approx 6-7 times for conferences.

There's a decent sports bar in town called 33 Brick Street with lots of Larry Bird memorabilia. There's also a very good German restaurant in town.

I would hit Chariot Run outside Louisville on the way home.

Just a random question that I am sure you looked into. The Pete Dye Course is an all day rate, are you paying that rate for 2 separate days? If so I'd just pay it once and play it on the same day. Or do you have a package that is doesn't matter you can mix and match?

Great catch...I did not make the arrangements so I had to double check just now and you are indeed correct. We are doing Ross Saturday and Dye Sunday. It was a little pricey to split them up and not get the replay rate. Edited the original post.

One more thing.... plan some time to sit in the center of the Baden with a cocktail from Ballards. No conversation necessary. Just relax and chill. Absolutely amazing space.

The $10 walking tour at the Baden's pretty darn cool too.

There's a brand new bar just inside the casino that's kinda cool.

There's a Denny's right across the street for late night munchies.

There are shuttles to take you about anywhere around town, even to the Ross course up the way. But you can walk many places too.

Take the trolley to the Baden at least once.

Sultan's Run is a nice track.

Schnitzelbank is a kitschy German restaurant that are a dying breed in the midwest. Do it to mix it up. There is a chain hotel (I can't remember which) right next door to it.

There's a Hampton right next to the Schnitzelbank. Same owner. Get the 2" smoked pork chop.... you're welcome.

Oh, and in the evenings, the Baden has a light show up in the dome that's pretty cool.

Another vote for Chariot Run. Best I've played in the state of Indiana. Sultan's Run is well worth the stop. Nevel Meade is a nice public course East of Louisville on the KY side as well.

Schnitzelbank is a must. Gut busting deliciousness.

Had a conference there and thought it was very cool. Great very old world resort with spacious, comfy rooms with ghosts! Courses are exceptional but very pricey. BB

If you're planning on going to French Lick at the end of May, I would suggest you make plans to play the brand new Pfau Course at Indiana University on that Friday, only an hour away. It has been closed for 2 years undergoing a $12 million renovation by Steve Smyers with input from Spider Miller and Fuzzy Zoeller. The course has already been played by both varsity teams and some of the major donors but will be open to the public at the start of May. Quick google search will give you all of the info of the redesign.

The Pfau course sounds amazing....might have to take a look at that seriously!

I’d be happy to get you on at hunting creek in Louisville... itd be about $90 a person, cart included, and is a great track. We are 90 minutes from French lick.

french lick is fun. Haven’t played the courses, though. Feel free to pm me about the area.

and even when it’s done, it’s not going to be done done... I’m not a fan of the current plan, and am worried about the long term health of the club.

i still think it’s the best course in Louisville outside Valhalla.

Don’t skip Sultan’s Run. Champion’s Pointe, which is just north of Louisville, is nice too.

Chariot Run, Sultan’s Run, and the Ross Course at French Lick are all great. Ross was really impressive conditions considering I played it in November. Chariot Run had great greens. I think they were running almost 12 the day we played. Great service at all three clubs also.

I concur on the service. Consistently good. I believe CR is managed by FL now.
