Calculating Net Double Bogey????

Recommended Posts

I need help with what the new rule is. I have looked all over the internet and it's the "net" number added to the par and the 2 strokes that I don't understand. Here's a scenario:

Par 4, 12 hardest hole and my handicap is 19. I get a real 8 on the hole. What's my net bogey? 4 + 2 + X = Net Bogey.

It's the "X" I can't figure out.

The par on the hole is 4. It is the #1 stroke index hole and you are a 19 giving you 2 handicap strokes. The max score for posting you can have on that hole is 8 because 8 - 2 handicap strokes is a 6 which is a net double bogey (net because you subtracted your handicap strokes to arrive at double bogey).

You start with your actual handicap (19). You then have to calculate your course handicap. Use a calculator like located https://www.usga.org/course-handicap-calculator.html. You need the course rating, slope and par (located on scorecard) Lets say the course you are playing is rated 70, slope 114, par 70. Your course handicap would be 19.

19 means you are getting a stroke on every hole and two stokes on the hardest (#1) Handicap hole. This means if you were playing in a Net stroke event, you would shoot even par if you shot 89. If you are playing match play, it means your score for each hole would be reduced by 1 stroke on every hole, except for the hardest #1 handicap hole where your score is reduced by 2. The net double bogey has no bearing on your score during the round, you just need to take your gross (actual) score and reduce by the number of handicap strokes you get to get your net score.

The net double bogey comes into play AFTER your round when posting for handicap purposes. You do not post your NET score, you post your GROSS score. However, you Gross score must by reduced by any strokes over your max strokes per hole.

Lets say you shot 95 with an 8 on the 12th hardest hole(par 4). You would post 94 (Par 4+ 1HC stroke + double bogey (2) =7 max hole score. You shot 8, so we reduce that score by 1, thus you post 94, not 95).

Ok boys, I might have gotten it.

My HC=19, Course Par=72, Course Rating=71.3, Slope=123

19 x (123/113) + (71.3-72) = 19.91 = 20 strokes for that course

So for just for regular play with my buddies and posting my score I would get 1 stroke per hole and 2 strokes on the 2 hardest holes if I tank and have to use the new Net Double Bogey scoring.

When does the Net Double Bogey formula not apply? Of course it doesn't with a bogey or better.

@MontrealMike I'm assuming you are a GolfCanada member based on your username.
If you download their app it will give you your Course Handicap for every course and tee box in the system. If you use the app to enter hole-by-hole scores it will also automatically handle the net double bogey for you.

Net Double Bogey (NDB) replaces Equitable Stroke Control (ESC) as the method which limits the maximum posted score for a hole. The purpose is to help limit sandbagging by preventing one crazy (and possibly intentional) hole score from wrecking what would otherwise be a good score that would count towards your handicap. Given your handicap index and the resulting course handicaps you will have, it is highly unlikely you would ever have an instance where a gross double bogey would be adjusted lower.

The Scary part of this system is a lot guys have heard that is when you pick up your ball after NET double Bogey... If in stroke play competition one still must hole out and write down the true score no matter if it is 6 strokes over PAR.

the Net Double is only for Posting your Score into GHIN or whatever system you use. So a guy may shoot a true score 105 but can only Post a score of 90.

As long as the 12th hole is not one where you get strokes. You do understand that each hole is assigned a number indicating its relative difficulty. That determines whether you get a stroke or not on that hole. The #1 stroke index hole could be hole 1 or hole 18 or any other hole on the course.

I understand. I have 10 strokes on this course. I use them on the 10 highest ranked holes or if I don't need them on all 10 highest ranked holes, and I still have some strokes in the bank, I could use a stroke on the 11th ranked and up. But once I use all 10, the most I can post per hole in double bogey? in other words, if I used my 10 strokes and on the par 5 18th hole (which is ranked 18) I get an 8. Do I log a 7 or 8?

No, you will never have strokes banked up. That isn't how this works. You adjust each hole by how many strokes you are getting on that individual hole. So if you birdie and get a stroke, your net is eagle. If you double bogey without any strokes, your net is double bogey. If you bogey with a stroke, your net is par. If you quadruple bogey and you get a stroke, your net score is triple bogey AND after the round for posting, you have to reduce your overall gross score down by one since the max gross score you could take on that hole is 7. If you take a 10 on a par 4 where you were getting 1, your net score is 9 for play, but your gross score for posting would be 7.

Just when I thought I understood it all. Now I'm really confused. Let's say I shoot 95. My handicap is 15 and the course rating/slope/par gives me 16 strokes. Hole 1 Par 4 (rated 1) I score 8, net score is 7 and so is my gross score (7)? Let's move to the 18th Par 5 (ranked 18). I score a 8. I don't have any strokes on that hole. Net is 8. Is my gross 7?
